Mr. Ypsi

OK, I'm lost!

We somehow have Star Trek, Waffle House, and nutritious all in the same conversation?  Something tells me that if you put all those into a google search, you would come up empty! ;)

(Trying to cover-up my lack of knowledge of contemporary 'culture') Hey, what is the status of the holiday/break exemption for in-region games: dead, on indefinite hold, likely to be passed in the next session or two? ;D

Pat Coleman

I don't think it's dead but there were too many difficulties to overcomem such as the apparent logical fallacy of a game that could count as regional for one school and non-regional for the other. Logistical issues.

In other non-related news...

St Norbert's Aaron Sunday, currently ranked 16th in the midwest will take on #18 ranked Dan LaFontaine of Grinnell in the MWC's biggest tennis match-up in several years this Saturday.

... now back to your regularly scheduled programing.

William Shatner's now portly physique makes me think he may be spending too much time dining at Waffle House... or is it White Castle?

WTF

Star Trek and MWC Hoops just don't mix.

The Roop

Star Trek and MWC Hoops mix just fine. Brandy and Rootbeer do not however.

Rumor has it John Tharp (Lawrence) is very interested in IWU and IWU is very interested in John Tharp.

Any thoughts?

No idea if it is true, but the thought depresses me.  Tharp would have a huge amount of success at IWU.  There is no way that he would not have won a title or two with the group that they had the last three years.  Old School...you were at the game at LU.....LU led for 37 minutes against a tema that was clearly the most talented in the nation.

If IWU can hand him a bunch of money and lead him on his way to something bigger, good for Tharp.  He does have roots in northern wisc. and a great family, so it cannot be an easy decision.  He can both recruit and coach...obviously, or he would not have had the success he has had at LU.

LU needs to pony up if necessary(in my opinion).  To lose John to a D1 or 2 program would be understandable.  To lose him to another d3 program would be shameful.

All just my opinion......but have been worried ever since I saw that Trost left.

The Roop

Don't have any good rumors on the Tharp situtation so maybe I can jinx the whole thing. Tharps not going anywhere................................

Well, I'm sure you've all heard about the terrible storms in Iowa City the other day. As many as three devastating tornadoes hit town and campus. Not sure that you have heard the terrible news about Steve Alford though. Apparently one tornado hit his house, pulled him out a window, spun him around a bit and then deposited him on the ground several hundred feet from his home.

I guess Mother Nature doesn't want him either.

Yeah, I was at both the Whitewater regional and the Lawrence sectional and in the past, I've compared the two games IWU played against Whitewater and Lawrence.

In the Whitewater game, IWU came out on fire and led by 20 at the break.  They shot 68% in the first half and were 8-12 from 3-pt. range.  Dauksas was on fire and seemed like he couldn't miss.  Whitewater shot 36% in the first half.  In some cases, poor shooting performance happens because of great defense.  In other cases it's because the team just can't buy a basket, missing "bunnies", not knocking down open shots etc.  In Whitewater's case, it was the latter.  Do I think the Titans were 20 points better than the Warhawks in the first half?  No.  It was a case of IWU hitting everything in sight and Whitewater uncapable of hitting the broad side of a barn.

In the Lawrence game, it was almost the complete opposite.  Lawrence was the team that was on fire, going for nearly 73% in the first half, including 9-13 from beyond the arc.  Luckily for IWU, they shot better than Whitewater shot, hitting 48% of their attempts.  Despite shooting 73%, Lawrence was only up 12.  That's an amazing stat and you'd think any team would be up by more than that.  Though down 12 at the break, I wasn't too worried that IWU would make a run; it was only a matter of time that Lawrence would cool down.

The difference between the two games is that IWU had a big enough lead vs. Whitewater and continued to shoot well (50% in the second half) to hold off the Warhawks.  Lawrence had a smaller lead, despite shooting better and just went cold in the second half, something IWU didn't do against Whitewater.

IWU may be one of the most talented teams to play, but after talking to some Titan fans, teams like Lawrence are the hardest teams for IWU to play because the Vikings like to slow things down and play methodically, while IWU likes to run up and down the court.  This kind of team is the reason why Hanover (?) beat IWU last year at the Shirk in the tourney.  They slowed things down and IWU had a hard time adjusting.

Lawrence obviously had a great chance to win that game.  They are one of the most fundamentally sound teams I've seen play (the other one, of course, being Point).  It's a system where you don't need super stars and super athletic players to be good.  It helps though!  ;D

I tried it ("Waffle House" "Star Trek" nutritious) came up with 379 pages in google.  Still, not a lot.  If you add basketball, it drops to 290.

Thankfully, as we discovered earlier, The Roop is capable of proving logical fallacies, so we should be all good there.

Does that mean that Waffle House is the end of the world?

I'm not sure, but it does fit nicely as a sign of the impending apocalypse.
