Portland, Oregon is fine if you like hot, sticky summers.  Surrounded by hills and right on the Willamette River with the Columbia nearby, Portland does not get a lot of air circulation in the summer.

It is also home to one of the largest homeless populations in the country - they like the year-round moderate temperatures.

Portland, though, is close to the mountains (Cascades) and Mount Hood, has some of the greatest scenery in the world right nearby and his just an hour and a half from the lovely Oregon coast.  Just don't go to the coast thinking you can enjoy a dip in the ocean - not with a 'wet' suit the water is very, very (ankle numbing) cold on the Oregon coast 99% of the time.  Great storm watching in September, though.  And, a great place to see sea life.

I would rate Portland "a poor man's Seattle" - just not as nice as its famous cousin up Interstate 5.

That depends on how much the "extra" repairs will cost me on the car. Surprise surprise. After they got everything torn down they had to resurface the heads.

FYI, it will be the fall semester anyway. Next semester is summer semester.

I've had students in their 60s, 70s, and one in her 80s!  Don't use age as an excuse for not being a student!

Well Senior Ypsi, I'm not using age as an excuse. I do plan on going this fall. However, if the "simple" car repair gets beyond what I can afford, it will likely set things back a few months.
