What impact does your favorite school have on the community.....or is there none?

If the College or Beloit suddenly vanished I don't think the other would notice. I think the College does a  good job of schmoozing with the professional set in the area, which is fine, but as for any bridge building to the community at large I just don't see it. Granted I don't live there anymore but if it was happening I would hear about it. They need to put on something like Celebrate at Lawrence. I'm assuming they still have that. That was always a good time and a big turn out.

An extreme example of the communities perception of the College is that it exists solely for the purpose of those rich SOBs having someplace to send their brat kids away to school. Obviously that's not true but the College does come across as a bit stuffy at times. Everybody knows that Beloit is a quality school but they've heard that to the point of being tired of hearing it. All the academic talk can only keep people interested for so long.

Since everybody can agree on eating good food I say they should extend an olive branch by holding an annual cook off. And by cook off I mean BBQ, not some culinary exposition with water cress salads and hydroponic broccoli shoots. I've attended some of the "open to the public" events they have on campus and they are usually so artsy that you need 15 or 20 credits in Central Mesopotamian Folk Dance to understand what is going on.

If you want to draw a crowd in the midwest all you need is a beer tent, bingo and sweet corn. What you have beyond that is irrelevant as those are the money makers. Throw in a fried cheese curd booth and somebody to tie balloon animals to keep the kids entertained and you're set. Judge the BBQ competition in between raffles and the bridge between campus and community is complete. You probably won't get much interest from the wine tasting and birkenstock crowds but they run the place the other 364 days so they won't be missed. The only downside I see is the need for a Vegan Awareness booth. That way they can get immediate grief counseling for having to see people enjoy eating meat.

I could go on further but I think I've covered most of the publics impressions of the College. It wouldn't hurt them to develop a sense of humor either, but that's another lesson. By the way, this is a killer too, since they'd be selling sweet corn at Beloit College it should be sold for a buccaneer.

Gobucs,

UWSP is big within the community (heck, bigger within the community than within the student population).  Point games really have become a family affair, and they've done it by making the games very family friendly, with incentives for the kids (such as flags on the day the miliary is there, give-aways of t-shirts and balls, etc).

I know that UWEC's women (and to some extent UWSP's women) have made strides to get out into the community as a team and be seen, meeting people and getting team information out to businesses, etc.  The camps help, as well... children who come to the games often times wear their camp T-shirts (and there may be certain games where that would be encouraged... not to say that it WOULDN'T be encouraged for all games).

Well Grotberg makes the pre-season honorable mention team.  Let the fun begin.
That's great recognition, but why are you disrespecting Drury who made 4th team?

Now if you want to debate Drury above Grotberg...

"And I agree, people always seem to be saying Ripon has such good players, great coach and it gets followed by excuses.  I would like to believe when I add excuses, at least I'm seeing the big picture.  They had and have a lot of talent, every team in the conference has talent, and RC has not lived up to theirs, with a few exceptions (2000 - NCAA 2nd round, and 2002 - NCAA 1st round) not in the 2000s.  Last years team, first losing season in 23 years, did not play well together and they did not play good defense.  With a huge cast of players back who went through that losing season, hopefully the guys have figured out that defense wins championships"

Hope is not a strategy.  Gillespie must make wholesale changes and get a few of those great athletes to extract their egos or it will be more of the same.  No team concept, none.    I hope they are better this year as the LU/Ripon games last year weren't very good.  I actually miss Tommy Becker.  Probably not as much as the Ripon fans do.

Unless Ripon had a miracle recruiting year, I really don't think they have the ability to contend this year. Granted they have returning talent but they can't seem to play on the same page.

If Carroll is as down as everybody thinks then Beloit is the obvious choice for #2 in conference. Should an upset occur here or there then Flood Arena will be the site of the MWC Tournament. Just as The Roop predicted.

Who is Flood Arena names after, and please don't say "Flood" without letting us know why.

Thanks.

Schultzie probably has shat himself already as Carroll is up 19-10 over the Badgers at the 10 minute mark.   :o

very impressive performance by Carroll.  Hanging in there despite Drury laying a goose egg so far.  Colomy looks like he is the man this year.  Looks like a transfer named Mueller is doing well also.
