dhf, maybe you should invert your name to confuse the newbies   -  become Lee April !!!!
I actually have a Korean name... if my name was inverted Korean style, I'd definitely use my Korean name. Which of course people wouldn't be able to figure out the gender, but would probably be enough information for a stalker to track down my info, which is definitely not cool.

Or just tell them that April is a guy's name in Korean.  A lot of posters are from the Midwest and would totally buy that.
This is mean, but it's kinda funny in an incorrect way.

I think some people don't like to be known by their actual name!  Disregard the email I sent you asking why you switched your name.  I guess it is kind of weird, so maybe you're on to something and you'll start a trend!

Sometimes when I post something, I'm not sure if I should say diehardfan or April...in fact, I remember some of my posts that refer to you by both names!
Well, the problem with referring to me as April on the board is that it makes it difficult for newbies to understand what's going on, as they wouldn't know who April is... the same is true with the many, many inside jokes we regulars all throw down all over the place.

However, people that know me frequently refer to me as "diehardfan" when it's just the two of us talking.... now that is super, super weird, but it actually happens quite often. I understand the desire for some identifications to remain hidden, especially since I had a stalker. There are people who may be part of a public position like the school staff or an important person in a company, that might just prefer not for everyone to know what they do in their personal time... totally legit. But it's also is dangerous to allow the whole concept of "personas" into your general day to day beingness... since the way I was when I posted under "diehardfan" wasn't different than real life April, it wasn't that bad, but so many people use their screen names here to act differently than they would in real life... and well, I just don't think that's healthy at all.

I'm definitely not important, so I guess I really don't care if I use my real first name.  I have no problem if people call me Old School either...it's actually cooler. lol.  Anyway, if any other poster gives me problems, just remember that I "have people"... :D

Interesting. I changed from using my real name to The Roop. Now other people are changing their screen names to their real names. We need one of those string theory physicists to explain why this is happening. Where is Mikio Kaku when you need him ??

Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan)

I started posting in college under a nickname, which did give me some leeway to behave in an out-of-character way (although I did behave the same way at games, but in no other part of my life).

Regardless, when I graduated I decided that I'd rather be taken seriously, than as the wacko with the giant orange traffic cone who never shut up the entire game, so I went with the current moniker.  I've kept it to keep my anonymity, although there are few people left on the board who would ever remember me.

I guess I'm not opposed to being called "Hoops;" it's not an awful nickname, but the one poster I've actually met (JeffP) called me by my proper name, so I guess I won't really know how it feels until it happens in real life.

By the way, I am guilty of calling you April in posts just because it made me sound like I was on the "inside."  Now that I actually am sort of a veteran around here I realize the inside isn't something a normal person would aspire to, but anyway.

It's kind of funny, when I've referred to Tom and Dave (Old School and Swampgoon) who I frequently talk about after going to Pointer games (as I typically sit with them too), if I say "Tom" or "Dave" to my wife, she has no idea who I'm talking about.  If I say Old School and Swampgoon, then she knows who I'm talking about.  Actually, she's got her own nicknames for you guys...  Tom, she calls you Old Town, and she calls Dave Swamp Monkey, or something like that.  Yes, she's poking fun at us, but it IS all in fun.  Also, April, she was very interested in meeting Diehardfan, not so much because of your name (she had not been informed of your real name prior to your meeting, so I gather... perhaps a bit of an oversight on my part?  I dunno...) but because of your TRUE persona.

I've got my name because, well, frankly, I didn't think that the coaching staff at UWSP would appreciate a player (a freshman at that...) posting up anywhere but in the lane... the last two years, I've thought, eh, why change a good thing?

Fun, we can be not important together. :D

Thomas is a good name... why don't you like it? Thomas is one of the many Biblical names that I've latched onto as a serious contender for my theoretical sons someday.... ironically, so is Isaiah... apparently I need to have more than one son. :D

You should like your name... If I can come to terms with my Korean name, despite people making fun of for my heritage, and the name April, despite being called "Ape" my entire childhood, you should be happy with yours since it's much more normal. :P

Yeah, I was bummed we didn't get to talk more cause I was definitely looking forward to meeting her to... whose fault was that? I'm guessing it was Tom's. :D

I think your screen name is clever. I just also think your name is funny cause you're a guy and you have the word "special" in your name. I've had people ask about that who didn't know it was a beer... :D

And those of us who love Point Special (the beer, I haven't yet met the poster!) like it that way - they only make a certain amount, so the less that know of it, the more for the rest of us! ;D

BTW, a few years ago I taught an 'Al' (full name: Allison) - be careful in assuming gender from names!
