At one point Coach A had a 100% freshman squad out - interesting.

Couldn't have been for very long. Guard A played 38 minutes.

On a related note, Edith and I are back together and I'm getting it on the regular again. Blue pills, people. Blue pills.
After seeing your karma and reading your post,  I hope Edith and those blue pills will keep you so busy that you won't need to mess with us by posting any more.  :'(

Bad loss for Lawrence, although I am not sure any team will win at Point this season.  I still think the Vikings will be the team to beat in the league this year and it was probably a good learning expereince for team and coach playing a team of Point's caliber.

Good effort by SNC as well...the team certainly has more talent than they have shown, hopefully they can continue to play at this level. It appears that the freshman Wipperfurth is the real deal.

Don't sell Larry U short.  I don't think anyone on the team went into Quandt thinking, "Gee, I hope we don't lose by 30.  Let's just keep it close and feel good about ourselves."  They played us well and last year they nearly beat Point as well.  So, they are an experienced solid team that will fight Grinnell for top spot in the MWC.  Point isn't head and shoulders above the rest of the teams in the country, let alone the WIAC itself.  LU will be more than fine.

One more plea to jeffp...I miss your scent, your masculine aroma...systemfan86 adds a nice feminine touch to the board, but I need a man's perspective.

Ummm, I'm not the one who needs the little blue pill, so careful who you call out jerk wad. Or do you need the blue pill for that too?

[Yeah, I know he's probably not around to respond, but I hadn't actually read his rantings until today. Wish I hadn't, but I felt sorry for the clown. Guess I shouldn't have.]

Why's that? Please elaborate.

Given what appears to be a focused effort to get the record, it's a bit tough to genuinely celebrate this record. But it was done within the rules of the game, and they made an effort to do it within the framework of winning the game, so I don't see why it would be necessary to attack the legitimacy of the record. Asterix aren't for records we don't like, they're for records we question the legitimacy of, IMHO.

wow congratulations for having daddy set up another record for you... Coach A is prolly going through the tape as we speak making sure that the stat crew didn't miss a single assist...you could put the water boy from beloit in there and he could break the record if thats all they were trying to do...must be an interesting week at practice telling all the guys you're gonna play little A, the whole game in an attempt to break some record...hopefully they win an espy for this... and rename the cousy award the arsenault award

systemfan86-sorry I doubted your masculinity...you have to admit that your writing style is a little feminine, but I shouldn't have let that enter into the discussion.

jeffp...regarding what the Rooper said, if what I have written in the past has caused you to quit posting, just let me know and I will not post again until the day after your death, and that will only be to share a fond memory. i pray you outlive me though-the bue pills are said to cause heart attacks. but please, I don't want to be the yoko of the posting up board. the world needs to hear more jeffp, and less nonsense from the likes of rabble rousers like myself.

To understand someone such as myself, you have to realize where I came from. I'm a child of the 60's. I always try to tweak the man a little bit here and there.

hot pockets.

Roop...Edith doesn't talk in her sleep anymore, she's been drinking so much before bed, she's almost to the point of being comatose. I don't think she finds me attractive any more. I admit I'm not the stallion I used to be, but I can still ride the sled every now and again with the best of them.

That may well be true -- NCAA rules prohibit changing the stats after the fact, however.

Rant away on the rest, but that part was dumb.

Dave A does have talent as a player and IS a good assist guy. Like I've already said, it's hard to celebrate a record if you are simply making the extra effort to break the record (vs. doing it in order to win), but the number stands and he still had to put the effort out to accomplish it. Not many others could do what he did.

GF68 -
I'm pretty sure that taking 'style' lessons from you won't improve my standing or image on this board, so save your breath. Your an embarassment. The 60's have developed a bad reputation from self absorbed jerks like you. 'The Man' isn't on D3Hoops so you aren't tweaking anyone; you're simply being an @ss.

Unless they conspire with the other team to break a record, who gives a crap.  If you don't want them to break a record against you, then it's your job to stop them.  Give it a rest.

From the GC website:
"David Arseneault '09 broke the NCAA record for single-game assists regardless of division Saturday afternoon in Grinnell College's 151-112 men's basketball win over North Central University of Minnesota at Darby Gymnasium. Arseneault dished out 34 assists, breaking the previous mark of 26 established in 1989."

This is something that has been in the works since last season <VERIFIED> it just needed the right opponent for it to be pulled off. It was attempted a time or two but didn't get done last year so I'm glad that GC finally found the right victim. Nothing says class like stacking the deck to break a record. I hope it lasts a week.

Why not host a tournament next year with Rockford, Robert Morris-Springfield and Judson so that he may break his own record ?? 34 assists are not impressive when they are manufactured. He needs 50 or 60 in a game I think.

Breaking records for the sake of breaking records is never nice. Not with mice, not on ice. Roop I am...........

I agree with your sentiment, but Robert Morris-Springfield and Judson aren't the appropriate teams with which to make your point, Roop. While Grinnell would definitely wear out Judson (5-4) -- the Eagles only go seven deep -- that's not a bad team. Neither is RMC-Springfield. Those Eagles are only 5-8, but six of those eight losses have been to D2 teams.

Every MWC fan should stop by the Daily Dose blog (which you can access from the front page) and read the latest entry, entitled "I need an assist". In it, Pat Coleman takes Grinnell to task for actively conspiring to run up David Arseneault's stat line against a lousy team. Make sure that you read the responses, because Coach Arseneault himself takes the opportunity to cross swords with the Guru on this one.

Interesting read...

Openly admitting that I'm more likely than most to give the benefit of the doubt here, perhaps it's not quite as sinister as many are making it out to be.

As records go, an assist record seems less glory driven than most. His job was to get the ball to other players. He had to make game related decisions to get the ball to the open man, and the other players had to work to get open. Perhaps I'm enjoying an exercise in justification, but it seems less glory focused than an attempt to get a scoring record.

I think Coach A is right about the arguments on playing other players. These are a bit disingenuous. Grinnell has ten players averaging double digit minutes a game, three more who have more than 5 minutes a game, and 20 players that have seen game action. There isn't a (non-'system') team out there that can make that kind of claim, so saying the minutes should have gone to other players rings a touch hollow.

Grinnell has 7 newbies this year and they collectively spend and average of 54 minutes a game on the floor; that means that, on average, there is at least 1 first year on the floor at all times, and that for 14 minutes of every game (on average) their are two on the floor. So let's not play that card here.

[I'm going to cut and paste this over on the main page as well.]
