In fact, this makes no sense at all!!!!   Wash U has a higher winning percentage in region than Auggie as well as a much tougher schedule, but they are listed behind??????  What gives.

Does Auggie have someone involved in making these ratings?  What is the rationale for putting Auggie ahead of Wash and LU?

HERE is the link to the handbook that sets the criteria for regional rankings.

There is PRIMARY and SECONDARY criteria.

At first look, this is where LU may lack the credentials of other schools mentioned.

Win/loss % against regional opponents (it doesn't help that Carroll dropped out, Oshkosh dropped out and they lost to Point).

In-region head-to-head (lost to Point)

In-region results against regionally RANKED opponents.

Strength of schedule and overall winning % are secondary criteria.

Augustana beat Washington head-to-head, plus a huge advantage in games vs regionally ranked opponents,  Augie is 5-1, WashU 2-1, LU 0-0......... then factor in the rest of the OWP data.

and in the OWP number .050 difference is probably considered significant.

what is a regionally ranked opponent....the current rankings?   Just because LAwrence knocked Carroll off the rankings, why would you be penalized for that???????

OS: in region winning % is a primary component isn't it?

Thanks

Unfortunately thats how it works sometimes.

wow.  you know the other strange twist to this is that Augie caught Wash U the first game Wash U was without their best PG.   Augie had not yet lost theirs.   And I think it is clear that Wash U's conference is better than the CCIW this year.

It seems that they tweak the system every year to try and make it better, but it is like putting perfume on a pig to me.

just my opinion.   thanks SAC and OS for the feedback.

Nut, it gets worse. ;)

If I understand it correctly, the only regional rankings that matter (both for selection directly, and for 'record against regionally-ranked teams'), is the final ranking - which is never seen by anyone other than the selection committee! :(

You're 'right' about the Augie/WashU result: it was over 3 months ago, and Augie still had Delp, while WashU had just lost Wallis.  Officially, at least, 'tough beans'. :D

Augie lost its shooting guard, not its point guard. As to the UAA being better than the CCIW this year ... no, not really. I've seen just about every UAA team this season, since they all have to come through Chicago, and I've seen every CCIW team -- most of them multiple times. In my estimation, the two leagues are roughly equal this season. In fact, I was surprised when I saw Rochester earlier this month; the Yellowjackets were #3 at the time, but they were close to being a carbon copy of Elmhurst, which was only #25 at the time.

Funny you should say that Greg, I was recently going to argue that I thought the MWC may be better than the CCIW this season. Is this the ultimate message board blasphemy or does anyone else agree :) ???

Sorry, but that is simply too laughable to be blasphemous! ;D

why aren't teams punished for BAD losses in the reginal rankings?

Augie lost to North Park this year.  Look at LU's losses and tell me which one of those was that bad.

Uh oh, I feel the arrival of Greg Sager. :D  Were you talking about 5-national-championships North Park?  The team with a lot of young talent and a very promising future (and unmatched past)?  Is that the North Park you meant?  They were up and down, like any young team, but capable of beating anyone on any given night.  And they beat my even younger IWU Titans (hoping for an unexpected CCIW title) in the final regular season game.

Poorly chosen example! ;D

barely above .500 team = bad loss, I don't care how young or tough they were playing at times.  Back to my question though, why don't bad losses count more in the regional rankings?

FYI- I dont care how storied anyone's past is.  What have you done for me lately?  You must be a notre dame football fan to.

Bite your tongue!  I'm a fan of the all-time winningest football program, not those second-place (second-rate?) Irish! :D  (And, yeah, I've already anticipated your "App St" reply! :P)

As to your 'real' question, OWP and OOWP already penalize a team (win or lose) for playing weak opponents (and Augie and WashU are above Larry on that, overall); beyond that I can't really respond.  The criteria are what they are.  Augie has 'worse' losses than Larry; they also have 'better' wins.

Amos Lawrence

No love for the MWC on the home page poll ??? Any tourny with Carroll, Lawrence, and Grinnell in it is going be exciting!
