As much as I hate to talk about Monmouth ;D, CMU is actually a very good D2 program.  They are picked second in a tough conference.  The team picked first, Southwest Baptist, already defeated Utah this year.

You're absolutely right, Firestarter (as much as it pains me to say that).   ;) The Mules of UCM, the will always be CMSU to me, are the real deal year in and year out.  A lot of juco transfers, and in some years DI cast-offs, come to this program.  (My guess is that this is the exact formula for most DII programs.)  Losing to them, even by blowout standards, is no shame.  I think they are 0-19 in the series.

In 1993, I believe, (the days of Castle, Richmond, Blaesing, et. al.) Monmouth went crazy from 3 and were up about 16 on them midway through the second half (it was like the 90's version of Hoosiers)....only to lose in the last few seconds.  The Mules went on to the DII Elite Eight Tourney that year.
HEY PAL, DON'T BLOCK THE SHOT!

Gotcha, thanks for the info.
Interesting to see that now 4 people have voted for other...

Grinnell gets their season going tonight vs Baptist Bible tonight and Manhattan Christian tomorrow. According to the Grinnell web site, these two have played each other with Manhattan beating Baptist. For whatever that's worth...

Also on the web site is the following announcement...

"The Grinnell College men's basketball home game against Vennard College on Tuesday, Nov. 25, has been canceled after Vennard announced last week that it is closing. "

OK, that's a new one on me. A game cancelled because the school is shutting down in the middle of the year?! Yikes. That's really sad for those kids at Vennard.

One other tidbit from the Grinnell website...

The Jan 27 game against Monmouth will be played in Des Moines as a preliminary game before an NBA Development League game. Interesting. Wonder if that will have a larger crowd that if they played it at Darby?

Anyone one know if the NBADL is any good? Which game will be more interesting?

Greek Tragedy

I'm looking forward to seeing Grinnell play this year.  I think the expectations should be high this year with Grotberg, Little A and Bobby Long all seniors this year.  I should be making the Grinnell game vs. MSOE in Milwaukee, as I live in the area now, and I'm trying to coax my friend to drive a little over an hour away to Beloit when Grinnell goes there.  Maybe our resident Alumnus of Beloit can meet us down there...what do you think, The Roop?

Games will be limited for me this year as my wife is not nearly the basketball fan I am...which makes me wonder why I married her! lol :-)

Maybe the NBADL is looking for a boost in attendence from Grinnell!!!!

I will attend the Grinnell @Beloit game, however I'm not an alum; merely a fan.

Get to Beloit around 5:30ish that evening and I think I can spring for a pizza at Domenicos. You can't say it's not the best until you've been there.

Gotta have a quick nap right now as I'm heading to Appleton today. Should be a good double header.

UWSP beat Mount Senario on December 13th, 2001 109-44... and Mount Senario's basketball program folded soon their after, along with the rest of the school.  We said it was because of the TWOMPING we laid on them... but I think it was because of financial troubles.

Roop,

Hope you get back in time tonight to give us a recap.

If I'm a Ripon fan I have serious concerns about this years team. They were beaten relatively easily by a very average Cornell team. Couple nice shooters but that's about it. If they struggle tomorrow against Coe then it will be a long year as Coe didn't strike me as being particularly good. The shots will start falling better when you take better shots but OMG where was the defense ??

LU nearly tripled up Coe by the 10:00 mark in the first half. Then got a little sloppy and made the game closer than it should have been. I started yawning with about 6:00 left in the half and left with 4:00 remaining. Long day for this 3rd shifter, etc. The 90 minute drive home took 3 days it felt like. So I'm assuming LU won but if it was by less than 20 they underachieved. They shouldn't have any trouble with Cornell tomorrow however.

Did I see wc2viking at the scorers table ??  :o

Yeah, I help out with stats sometimes.  I actually forgot the final score, but LU won by about 15.  Obviously, LU played well enough to win the game, but their performance as a whole was a little lackluster.  After the big lead early, it seemed like the intensity just went out of the game.

While unfortunate it's not unprecedented. Milton College, for example, closed while their baseball team was in the middle of a west coast trip. It took lots of phone calls and alumni contributions just to get the team back home.

I should point out that Milton is just north of Beloit so it was quite an undertaking to rescue the players.
