Mr. Ypsi

But as I already noted, for 5 of the 9 games, so is the CCIW.

Scots4

As my math teacher noted, 8/9 is a higher percentage than 5/9.

Unless you've demoted Carroll to bottom-of-the-barrel status, that's 7/9, but point noted.  It's not exactly heavyweights vs. heavyweights.

The CCIW is better than the MWC this year. I would personally be surprised if the CCIW doesnt sweep the remaining games.

Gregory- Which games left do you expect the MWC to win to get to 3-4 wins? I am an MWC guy through-and-through, but I just dont see them being favored in any of these. Outside of Grinnell, the MWC is represented by the bottom of the barrell in these matchups.

Fortunately for the CCIW, there isn't a Monmouth game on their schedule.   :D

sorry...7/8 for the remaining games.

QuoteOr did the stuff that came before the ellipsis escape your attention when you read my post?

If you had read my post, it would not have escaped your attention that my concern wasn't with what you wrote prior to your ellipsis, it's what came after.  Predicting the season series is a good topic for conversation.  But prefacing every matchup that NPU has against the MWC with the injury crutch is an excuse.  Meaning, if they lose, you can always say "well they had a lot of injuries."  What else would that be called?  At least that's how I took it.

What else would it be called? Why, exactly what I called it last night -- a gesture made to ramp up the degree of difficulty on a positive prediction, i.e., the proverbial winning with one hand tied behind one's back.

I'm mostly kidding around, but bring that CCIW noise to the MWC board and there isn't going to be a positive reaction.

[in best third-grader "he started it" tone] I was simply reacting to PC's calling out the CCIW with that "MWC - 1, CCIW - 0" stuff in his post. [/third-grader tone]. ;)

The 2008-09 MWC Pickem has arrived.  The games are now posted in the Pickem thread.  Pick your winners for the first weekend of MWC conference games.  There are 11 games to pick before the Holiday Break, so make your sleections, tell your friends, lets get a big group to pick.

Don't let curmudgeonly posts dissuade you from using multiple cameras. Multiple cameras are good.

Also, since web video is not a perfect stream, don't rely on the pictures solely to carry the action -- I would still do play-by-play close to the radio style. You never know how many frames the viewer is actually going to see.

Glad I could bring some excitement to the ole MWC board with a discussion over who's worst teams are better the MWC or the CCIW...

just to add to the discussion... of the 9 games, 6 will include teams from the MWC's Coach's poll's bottom three, so we trump you mr Ypsi  :P :-*

PC,

I believe Loras was a Sweet 16 or Elite 8 team a year ago...no shame in dropping a close one to them.

Or they lost in the first round...

and I wasn't making a judgement on SNC's shame in this result, if I was I probably would have said somthing like "I guess that vicotory at Oshkosh was a fluke..."

Since no one else has mentioned it, Lake Forest cruised by #22 Univ. of Chicago 73-54.  Nice win for an MWC team picked to finish 7th in the conference.

OK, Chicago is now 0-4 and certainly won't be ranked in the next poll.  However, Chicago only lost to #2 Augustana (of the CCIW) by 1 and if we use comparative scores...

Greek Tragedy

Loras upset top-seeded Whitewater on their home court in the first round and then lost to Wheaton, who beat Lawrence.  So, they made it to the 2nd round.  The other IIAC team, Buena Vista, won their first round game in St. Thomas (not against them) and then beat Stevens Point to advance to the Sweet 16, where they lost to Washington U., I believe.

When did stating a fact become a "calling out." I guess Old School just called out Whitewater, Lawrence, Buena Vista, and Stevens Point in that last post. I am ready for all their fans to come on here in their defense.  ::)

You don't measure a league's strength by only comparing its top teams to the top teams of other leagues. You measure a league's strength from top to bottom. Therefore, the games between teams picked to finish at the bottom of their respective leagues -- and let's keep in mind that we're talking about predicted finishes, since nobody's established yet who the "worst teams" are from either the CCIW or the MWC -- are just as valid a measuring stick for the purposes of comparing the two leagues as are games played between the top predicted teams.

Please don't. Chicago played very well in that game last week (which I saw), but Augie was without preseason All-American Drew Wessels. The Augie with Wessels that went into overtime with Wash U on Saturday night is a significantly better team than the Augie that needed that Jordan Delp jumper with 2.5 left on the clock to beat the Maroons.

Nevertheless, that's a very nice win for the Foresters, particularly since it was something of a romp. Regardless of Chicago's current record, that's the kind of win upon which Chris Conger can hang his hat at the end of the season.

Quote from: Scots4 on November 26, 2008, 01:27:39 PMWhen did stating a fact become a "calling out."

When it's dropped into the conversation completely unbidden, that's when. And when it carries with it the prior context of years and years of interleague rivalry in which MWC backers have perceived the CCIW as the local private-school bully, that's when. Don't be disingenuous, Scots4; PC didn't just drop that factoid into the end of his post for no reason at all, and you know it.

It's all good, though. The CCIW/MWC rivalry is a healthy thing for local D3 sports fans, as far as I'm concerned. But let's not pretend that it doesn't exist whenever it suits our needs to make such a denial.

OK, I got it.  Augie (CCIW's preseason #1) is a one-man team.  Without Wessels, they're significantly worse than Lake Forest (MWC's preseason #7).  Thanks for clearing that up!  ;)
