Do shoot ... do guard ... just don't press.

Using Grinnell as the example, shooting quickly in the shot clock with a big lead isn't objectionable. The two objectionable parts for them or any team would be pressing when up 30 late and playing studs when up 30 late.

I have seen Coach A take his foot off the gas before. I am by no means saying he is a chronic offender of these "unwritten rules."

When a team is totally helpless and there is no shot clock as was the case in the 100-0 game in Texas, I would think teams could make 10 passes before shooting or some such concession. That would also be a game where reserves could and should be playing well before halftime. Or, as The Roop says, the game shouldn't be played at all.

The team that won only has 8 girls listed on their roster, if that's the case taking out the starters isn't going to drop the level of play too much since two starters have to remain on the floor.

You read it wrong, HC. The team that lost, Dallas Academy, is the team that only has eight girls on the roster and twenty girls in the entire student body. The story never indicated how large a roster the winning team, Covenant Academy, has.

QuoteA parent who attended the game said Covenant continued to make 3-pointers — even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.

The difficultly here is that pressing is a big part of their game plan, so those players in the game at that point need to develop that skill to be effective in the Grinnell style of play. I think the fact that Grinnell gets so many players in each game makes it easier to let off the gas since the less common players already have real game experience.

I'm not advocating going all out all game.

It is a pet peeve of mine (that has happened in many youth sports) to watch when a loaded team plays a team with significantly lower skills, and the loaded team wants to 'practice' certain skills in the game situation. (Practice on your own damn time!) But that's a problem when you're talking elementary school or junior high school age kids. Once you get to high school or older, it you are gettting smacked around, you have to suck it up some.

I saw a youth game last week where the tie-breaker to go the final game was points scored in excess of your opponent in the first half.  So if you pound someone in the first half, you had little incentive to do so in the second as long as you won the game.  I thought that was a good idea to stop the unsportsmanlike stuff and give all the kids on each team a chance to get some minutes.

That is a good variation. Works for multiple sports.

I looked up Covenant who won the game to see if I could find results from other games they played. I couldn't find results but I found their roster which also only has 8 players.

100 to nothing is pretty one-sided...

here's my question: Is it worse to win 100-0 or to win 100-50?  Maybe 100-70?  Where is the cutoff that says "we just got our butts kicked?"

Maybe 155-107?

Was the team that won 100-0 supposed to stop taking open 15 footers?  Layups?  Free throws?  Did the refs not get involved?  Did they not start running the clock?

There's no answer to any of these questions except for this: 60-0, 50-0, or 10-0 would have gotten some press.  It was a SHUTOUT in a basketball game!!!!  A freaking SHUTOUT!!!!!!!  If the other team was really 100-0 bad, should they even be scheduling these games?  They fired the head coach, but perhaps the AD should be fired for allowing that game to be scheduled.

No doubt the game should never have been scheduled, but since it was a high school game there was no shot clock. That means that at some point the winning team could've merely held the ball and kept the score down. Instead, Covenant Academy kept stealing the ball and kept shooting until it hit 100 points with about four minutes left in the fourth quarter. At that point the head coach finally called off the dogs and instructed his players to hold the ball until the final horn.

Here's the followup: Covenant Academy is now seeking to forfeit the game to Dallas Academy to atone for its bad sportsmanship.

Man, who's in charge of the Grinnell web site? They have a story on Long with a picture of Little A.

It's not the first time they've messed that up. Weird.

Nice....   ???   T2K is obviously forgetting the GC Brickfest while showcasing the System under the bright lights of ESPN.  Who won that game anyway?  Maybe The Roop knows.
