Conference Tournament watch 2009: Otherwise known as Taco Johns?  Alex Popcorn?  De Pere...really??

Standings as of 2/12/09

SNC 12-2
GC 11-3
LU 10-3
CU 10-4

Games remaining:
SNC @LU, CU
CU:  RC, @SNC
GC:  IC, @MC
LU: SNC, BC, @ RC

The 4 way tie @ 12-4 is still possible, but not looking likely.

SNC would have to lose to LU and CU
CU would have to win @ SNC and beat RC
GC would have to lose 1 game of the two
LU would have to win against SNC and lose one of the other two.

In that case if all 4 teams tied at 12-4 Head to head would be:
SNC 1-0 vs GC, 1-1 vs CU, 0-2 Vs LU
CU  2-0 vs GC, 1-1 vs SNC, 1-1 vs LU
GC 0-1 vs SNC 0-2 Vs CU, 1-0 Vs LU
LU 2-0 vs SNC, 1-1 vs CU 0-1 vs GC

This is Carroll's only way of hosting the tournament.

If I had to guess....here would be my final standings:
GC  13-3
LU  13-3
SNC 13-3
CU  11-5.

In this senario LU would host due to best record against the two other tied teams. If LU loses one of their last three games they can not host.

If SNC wins @ LU on Saturday they will host due to their head to head tie-breaking win over Grinnell

For Grinnell to host, they need to win both their remaining games. and SNC to lose their 2 remaining games.

We should pretty much have a good idea which 2 teams it should come down to after Saturday's SNC @ LU game.  The winner of that game controls their own destiny.

I've said it once and I'll say it again.  LU is the clear favorite because they are the only one of the four who doesn't have to play at Monmouth in their last three games.  Do not sleep on the Scots.  They are, far and away, the most dangerous 7-14 team in the country.  Get ready for a Vershawshank Redemption! (Trademark pending....)   ;)

I'm not sure how you can say clear favorite.  SNC has a one game lead.   LU has SNC at home but I wouldn't be marking that down as a victory quite yet!

CU isn't going to win conference, or even tie for it with Hoch out of action.

Hoch sat for 1 of 50 minutes in the double overtime loss last night.  I'm pretty sure you mean Ladwig.  :P :D ;D

If we end up with a three way tie, does that impact the POY or COY voting?

There has been very little discussion of this. If Grinnell ends up in a tie for the conference regular season championship, does Grotberg pull any POY votes as a career achievement? He holds the conference scoring record and he's been first or second team All-MWC every year he's played. Without a clear favorite, could he step into the position? Just a thought.

Not that anyone would say it here  :), but some people - out there - might be tempted to call Grotberg's achievements artifacts of The System.  The career points, etc.  To which I say, Grotberg is such a well-rounded player, plays so well - the guy is one of the team's best rebounders, for Pete's sake - and he's Just.  That.  Good.

With so many other great players on the team and in the conference, Bobby Long will never get POY.  But he's been a rock for the Pioneers - there ought to be some sort of official "we couldn't have done it without you" recognition.

If given the chance to draft one of the Grinnell players for the LU team for the past 4 years, there is little question I would have selected Bobby Long.   There aren't enough basketballs in the Alex rack for Grotberg and the rest of the Vikings (as teammates) and we don't need phantom assists so Little Arse isn't at the top of the list.

Bobby Long plays offensively and defensively at a speed level we seldom see in Division 3 hoops. It would have been interesting to see how he would fit in an uptempo transition offense like LU that doesn't shun the 3 while playing tight defense (well not always, but with intent to).   We'll never know.

I vote Bobby Long as POY if Carroll falls in round 1 of the tourney, otherwise Hoch who carried CU most of the year.  Unless Kroeger leads the Vikings to the NCAA tourney, then Long and Hoch get honorable mention.  I can have it three ways, I am an officer of the NRO.  ::)

IMO, I take Grotberg. After playing against them both and guarding them both, to me, this isn't even that close.

I hear you, and I expect you're correct on that count. How about this number for those sceptics: in the four years Grotberg has been at Grinnell, he has been the leading scorer on a team is 45-17 in conference play over that time. Only Grinnell and Carroll have made the MWC tournament in all four of those years.

The biggest drawback to Grotberg getting consideration may be the contributions of the other two seniors on his team.

iltsilts

Grinnell has 2 other seniors who will be missed next year - R.J. Roewe and Ahmed Idrissa.  Ahmed was out with an injury quite a few games this season;  it's great to see him back on the court.  R.J. and Ahmed are both integral to The System's rotations.

titan2000

Maybe the Grinnell Taco Johns can sponsor an award for all these "contributors" with the $20 they robbed from me.   ;)
