System Error

I looked at the boxscore of the Grinnell game last night and noticed that Little A had 8 assists and 7 To's. However, this afternoon when I looked at the stats again I noticed he had 13 assists and 5 To's. Anyone have any explanations for that? Anyone go to the game?

The first one was probably the real stats and the second one was probably the Grinnell stats after they have their own guys look at the stats.

I know I am going to catch h*ll for tat comment but it does happen. I was on the receiving end of the generous assist tally they give over there in Grinnell and I am in the Monmouth record book to prove it. I have watched that game film many times and there is no way I should have had as many assists as they recorded me for.

It's not a secret that the Grinnell staff will go over game stats and modify them after the fact, and that they'll ask host schools to cooperate in doing so if it's a road game for the Pioneers. When your program is constructed in such a way as to showcase statistics, it makes sense to be as zealous as possible about massaging the numbers.

Fort Knox

The youngsters are still learning how to win  :(

Knox misses two free throws with the game tied and 24 seconds left, North Park bleeds the clock and banks in a bad three-point shot as time expires to win.

The Assist is not a Black and White stat and if you have someone scoring that doesn't understand Basketball they will give fewer assists.  Most clueless scorers believe that if there is a dribble there is to be no assist given.  Look at the scorers table at most games.  Either some old dude with no clue or a young punk with no clue.

Straight from the 2007 NCAA Basketball Statisticians' Manual
SECTION 5—ASSISTS
A player is credited with an assist when the player makes, in the judgment of the statistician, the principal pass contributing directly to a field goal (or an awarded score of two or three points). Only one assist is to be credited on any field goal and only when the pass was a major part of the play. The same player cannot be credited with an assist and a field goal made on the same possession.
Such a pass should be either (a) a pass that finds a player free after he or she has maneuvered without the ball for a positional advantage, or (b) a pass that gives the receiving player a positional advantage he or she otherwise would not have had.
Philosophy.
An assist should be more than a routine pass that just happens to be followed by a field goal. It should be a conscious effort to find the open player or to help a player work free. There should not be a limit on the number of dribbles by the receiver. It is not even necessary that the assist be given on the last pass. There is no restraint on the distance or type of shot made, for these are not the crucial factors in determining whether an assist should be credited.

I have seen Grinnel play enough.  When they get inside half court every pass has the intent to find an open player to score.  Look at Grinnell's official stats there is an assist for 65% of the FG's.  LU's team stats have an assist for 60% of the FG's.  Based on that, I would say Grinnel's line is fair.

That's why only middle-aged guys should keep score. :D

Lawrence suspends wrestling program

With LU not having wrestling anymore, does that mean it'll give those guys more time to practice their announcing skills?  ;)

Very funny.  Make a great point and wise@&& has to nit pick.   :P :P

Not that this would help LU in this case but wasn't there a time when there was only one division in wrestling ?? That might be something for the NCAA to consider in the future for the lower profile sports.

And before I get a lecture, I wrestled all through high school and am not trying to discredit it. I just don't think we need 3 divisions for all sports.

And I disagree. I just don't think UNICEF should go into the assist business.

I would think that anyone who travels to So Cal for the Larry game would be described as a diehardfan, don't you, April?  ;D
