Slight diversion here...the MWC conference swimming championships are being held this weekend and the Grinnell women's and men's team are on their way to winning their 11th and 8th straight championships. That sent me to the conference web site to see if there are other long running streaks of championships.

It sure looks like the MWC has some schools that are focused on certain sports. Grinnell has swimming (M & W) and cross country (M have won 22 of the last 23 titles); IC has golf (W, 6 years); Knox has golf (M, 16 of the last 21); and Monmouth has track (M & W, 12 of 15 and 13 of 14 indoor).
Interesting that it seems easier to dominate in sports that are more 'individual'.

I know Grinnell always wins the swimming and diving mainly becasue of the size of thier team.  They have some damn good swimmers, but they are really the only MWC team that completely fills every available spot in every available race. Grinnell has like 75 people each on the mens and womens swim teams.  LU is next with like 45 on each.  Not saying its wrong or bad, but thats why they win every year.  Good for them.

The road to Taco John's just got a little shorter.  Go Carroll and Ripon.

A quick look at the results from the first day indicates that's not completely accurate - at least in terms of that being the reason that they win.

If you look at the first five events:
Event 1 - one relay from 10 teams scored
Event 2 - one relay from 8 teams scored
Event 3 - 5 swimmers from LU scored, 3 from GC, 3 from CU, 2 from LF (18 swimmers score)
Event 4 - 5 from MC, 4 from GC, 3 from RC, 3 from LU,
Event 5 - 5 from BC, 3 from CC, 3 from GC, 2 from MC, 2 from KC
Event 6 - 4 from MC, 3 from LU, 3 from RC, 2 from GC
Event 7 - 5 from GC, 3 from LF, 3 from MC, 2 from LU (18 of 48 swimmers qualified for finals)
Event 8 - 6 from GC, 3 from RC, 3 from CU (18 of 38 swimmers qualified for finals)
Event 9 - one relay from 10 teams scored
Event 10 - one relay from 8 teams scored

Grinnell finished 1st or 2nd in nine of those 10 events.

I'm not disputing the numbers can help (more swimmers mean they can be better rested), but you still have to perform. Grinnell gets no advantage in the relays, and in the events where you qualify for the finals, a high percentage of their swimmers do qualify.

Where do you think the basketball team got the idea?  ;)

The Vikings do appear to be peaking at the right time.

What do the machines to cut this stuff cost?  Isn't an Aarowcast an aluminum foundry in Shawano?

Let's start D3Hoops Machining Inc.

Not sure what they cost but if it's more than a nickel New Roop City Steel got ripped off because that's all they're worth. I never said I liked them, I just said they were new. You are correct though, Aarrowcast is in Shawano.

The Good Guys and Good Gals are putting up a good showing, 2nd and 3rd respectively.  A very young team (third year?) without a full slate of divers, yet (a Grinnellian advantage), and a last minute coach replacement to start the season.  Don't be surprised if the Scots knock the Pioneers of the starting block in the years to come.

The Good Gals @Lake Forest game appears to be a play-in game for the MWC tournament as Carroll has the toughest row to hoe by hosting Ripon and then traveling to St. Norbert.

On the mens side that Carroll @St. Norbert game figures to be the "Going South Classic" as both teams are tanking at the wrong time. LU is  now Good Guy fans as they need a Monmouth Park win to host the Tournament.

Hosting scenarios:

Grinnell clinches with a win and a St. Norbert loss as they hold the tie breaker over LU.
LU needs to win out and a Grinnell loss as they hold the tie breaker over St. Nobert.
St. Norbert needs to win and a loss by LU as they hold the tie breaker over Grinnell.

In the event of a 3 way tie (at 13-3) I think it would go to Grinnell. They are 1-1 vs. LU and SNC. LU is 2-1 vs. GC and SNC but they lost to Grinnell and that would be the tie breaker; I think. SNC is 1-2 vs. LU and GC and would be the first team eliminated from the board. A 3 way tie @12-4 gets too complicated for me to bother figuring out as records against more teams would need to be compared.

Roop:

I believe in the 3 way tie breaker, the performance against the entire group is considered, so if LU and the Circus win out, and SNC beats Carroll, then the 3 way tie scenario means LU hosts as they are 2-1 (.667) against those teams as the Circus 1-1 (.500) and SNC is 1-2 (.333).

LU loses the two way tie breaker with the Circus based on the loss at Alex earlier this season.  I couldn't be a bigger SNC fan right now. And LU still has to beat America's team.

I talked to a fan who was at Alex yesterday and apparently the same crew that did the LU/Circus game on 2/1 worked yesterday's game.  The LU students were at their best again.  When Drew Shaw went to the table to check in, an LU student yelled to the ref to remind him to get his technical called right away as SNC had a shooter at the line already.  I thought that was cute.  Wish I could have seen it.

The Good Gals at the Tree Girls game should be a good one.  Monmouth won on a buzzer beater at home, 80-79, a game with 13 lead changes and characterized by one extreme-non-fan of the women's game as the greated women's game he'd ever saw.  The game being at LF concerns me a little, but we'll keep the bagpipes blown up in case a victory dance is in order.   ;D

Go back to the Roller Derby reference T2K, the circus moniker is tired.

Of course, bitching about the oafs from a game played three weeks ago is pretty tired too. Your Vikes are playing well. Enjoy it.

Here's a scenario for you. Carroll wins out. Monmouth Park beats Grinnell and LU losses twice. We could be going to Waukesha.

Roop: A few suggestions for new jobs if your interested in a career change:

1. Asst. SID for the MWC.  Since Matt Troha left, their office could use extra help.

2. Co-director of D3sports.universe.  Lord knows PC could use a hand.

3. Or, chief executive assistant and sports legal counsel for the new Beloit president.

The chances of getting your thumbs cut off might be slightly less at any of these than your current line of work.  Or, maybe not.  :D

I know the first two don't pay very well.
