Wow, no reaction to Grinnell's first loss of the season?  Who cares if the students are on break.  Where is everyone? LOL

We talked to Interim Head Coach Dave Arseneault on Hoopsville Sunday night... and the loss was certainly a big part of the conversation. You can listen to the archive at www.d3hoopsville.com - the segment is around 1:45 into the show.

Enjoy!

What's with the interim coaching thing at Grinnell?

I saw that tag earlier and looked on their website... in one of the stories last week or the week before (don't remember which) it said that his dad is on a sabbatical.

That was the only info I could find, though... didn't say for how long (just the semester?) or any other reasoning.  Odd that it's in the middle of the season... but it seemed like it was pretty close to the calendar year when it happened, so probably a planned thing and not a health issue or something..?

It was definitely pre-planned. First heard about it in October or November.

Coach Arseneualt, Sr. is on a planned, official sabbatical at Grinnell College as I understand it.  However, he has been at every game so far to my knowledge.  In addition, as I understand, the sabbatical is related to some research that Arseneualt, Sr. is doing related to those colleges and high school that are utilizing "The System."  By being on sabbatical, Arseneualt, Sr. is not always at practices and Arseneualt, Jr. is handling practices, scouting, game plan preparation, and game coaching during the second semester of the current season.  Both Areseneualt will return to their official capacities with the team next season.

Does this mean that Arseneault, Sr. is being credited with assists whenever his son wins? ;)

Has anybody ever heard of this happening before?  I've known profs to go on a sabbatical... but I've only ever seen coaches do something that could be considered a "sabbatical" for health or personal reasons... and rarely if ever pre-planned.

Few overall trends to note from those standings, especially the overall records.  As a group, the MWC has compiled a 32-31 mark so far on the year.  Pretty drastic dropoff from the top 4 vs. the bottom 6.

The top 4 teams (Grinnell, Lake Forest, St. Norberts, and Ripon) have combined for a total record of 24-4, which means the bottom 6 teams are combined 8-27.

Obviously it is very early on, with many conference games left to decide things, but could we possibly be headed for a year with a clearly defined top 4?  Right now the only team who seems to be close is Lawrence.

Again, I know it is early.

Lake Forest         8-0
Grinnell                7-1
St. Norbert           6-3
Ripon                    5-3
Carroll                  4-4
Beloit                    3-5
Lawrence             3-5
Monmouth            2-6
Knox                     2-7
Illinois College      1-7

The 4 frontrunners suggested at the end of the non conference portion of the schedule are the 4 leaders in conference currently.

I did not expect this much congestion in the middle of the pack, however.  I'll define the middle of the pack as teams 4 thru 7.  If we assume that teams 4-7 will lose to teams 1-3 and beat teams 8-10, it is imperative that they win the games against each other.

Those games between teams 4-7 will become even more important in clarify the picture of who gets that #4 seed.  I know that seems self-explanatory.  Interestingly enough, with our upcoming slate of Friday/Saturday games, none of these games involve those teams playing against each other.

It does look like a big weekend for the top 4 seeds as they jockey for position.  Lake Forest plays St. Norbert and Ripon.  Norbert and Ripon could potentially make up some ground, beat Lake Forest and then they have a cellar dwellar in the other.  On the flip side Lake Forest seems like they could really put some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack this weekend.

Dave Arseneault (pere) is an associate professor at Grinnell. It's my understanding that he is entitled to all the benefits and perks of that status, including sabbaticals. Not all basketball coaches are on faculty at their respective schools, so you don't see all that many sabbaticals. Big Dave's has been planned for quite some time.

Grinnell beat Beloit tonight 117-84. Beloit has some decent players. They should be a better team than they showed tonight.

Roop, do they have anyone who can shoot beyond 6 feet?
