Well, at the risk of ruining Point Tragedy's night by jumping the relevancy railroad track to answer two old friends...

Hoops, I'll head right over to fb. Man are you in for a shock when you see what I post THERE! Or maybe not. Hahaha!

I may not know Basketball, but SLYGO rips it up!

Sure hope you ALL have a great Thanksgiving filled with family and friends, good food and love all around.

None taken... though people who have met us in person don't usually get us confused... I'm a 6'9" white guy and he's a 5'8" (maybe?) Asian guy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

And I'm an old long-haired greybeard who used to be 5'8". We'll have to do a lineup sometime!

Greek Tragedy

I only 5'8" if I stand on a 5" phone book.  :-[

Thought I'd stop by and weigh in with a couple of points on the Jack Taylor 138-point game.

I've had the chance on a few occasions to meet Coach A since we both coach women's golf. From that time he seems like a very good man who cares deeply about his student-athletes (both hoops and golf) and has a very positive persona. In short, the type of man you'd want coaching your son or daughter.

With that said, I strongly disagree with this type of display. I think it demeans the game, the opponent and is poor sportsmanship. But that's my opinion and I respect that others would disagree with that.

I'll end with the thought that this is a massive PR win for Grinnell, and specifically its men's basketball program. I'm no longer the Carleton SID, but the director of media relations and we monitor Grinnell and St. Olaf's media mentions (print only) to compare to ours. The day after the effort Grinnell had nearly 1,000 mentions from this performance, and that doesn't include all the broadcast media mentions! It was talked about ad nauseam on ESPN for the next 24 hours, even by the NBA guys. There are lots and lots of basketball and sports media folks and fans who now know Grinnell. Would be interesting to see a report on the traffic to Grinnell's website during this past week - sure it was a massive increase. Not sure it will impact Grinnell's overall application numbers, but surely cannot hurt.

To your point, saw a tweet yesterday and I can't remember the source, but it was by an advertising think tank and it said this event had generated the equivalent of $2.2M worth of media coverage for Grinnell.  Have no idea how they measure that but assume that's just airtime on networks etc. if you had to pay for that time in ads.

Pat Coleman

I know it was a significant traffic boom for D3hoops.com. I can't imagine how big it was for Grinnell.

I've done a quick skim of all the posts regarding the Faith Baptist Bible - Grinnell game and looked at the box score (but not any video). I don't have any opinion that hasn't already been stated, but somehow it hasn't been mentioned here that Faith Baptist's David Larson scored 70 in that game.

I think because Larson's points were almost all off uncontested, wide-open layups that Grinnell gave so they could get the ball back to Taylor.  70 points sounds ridiculously awesome, but when you watch the game and see Larson's baskets I think you come away with a different feeling about it.  Or at least I did.

Greek Tragedy

I saw that he scored 70 as well, when I looked at the boxscore. Regardless of how he scored those points, I dont think anyone cares when someone else scores twice as much!

Has anyone - other than one local TV station - talked to or interviewed the Faith Players or Coaches? It would be interesting to get their perspective.

One Des Moines TV station reported that the Faith coach was ok with what happened. It wasn't a formal interview, just a reporter "reporting" the reaction of the head coach.

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

Faith Baptist's coach was on ESPN the next afternoon... didn't say anything overally negative... said he was impressed with the 138 points... but also tapped danced around the questions about whether they knew ahead of time, his actual feelings on the other facts, etc.
