I am a fan of Grinnell College basketball, both the men and women.  I respect the college academically and I respect what the school means to the community for which it is located.  I don't always agree with everything that Coach A. and the Pioneer men's basketball team does.  But, the style of play they have established in Grinnell, IA is very unique and fascinating to watch.  Not everyone likes the style of play and that certainly is fine.  However, the uniqueness of the program always attracts crowds where ever "the show" goes around the MWC and that can't be denied.

But, I am a bit miffed at some implied criticism of the most recent outcome of the team's single game accomplishments.  The criticism is not warranted in this particular case, in my humble opinion.  I think that it is awesome that Patrick Maher broke the national single game assist record with 37 assists in one, single game.  Why would anyone consider this to be an unworthy record?  Not only was the game a competive game between GC and College of Faith with GC winning by the score of 164-144, many players in the game achieved great single game scoring performances from both teams.  The assist record is a record that only a great passer with very good ball handling skills and an unselfish leader of a team can ever achieve during a basketball game and that is who Patrick Maher happens to be.  I am very proud of Patrick's achievements.  I have watched him play a lot over the years and he has routinely demonstrated a set of basketball skills that would be successful on about any type of team playing style you can think of.

People can say or think what ever they want about Coach A. or his GC men's basketball program.  That criticism comes naturally for the obvious reasons that have been opined on this thread.  But, anyone who implies that Patrick Maher broke an assist record that should be "disrespected" is completely off the mark.  Maher's record is legitimate and worthy.  It represents everything that we would like to see from basketball players with the word, "unselfish," coming boldly to my mind.

Congratulations, Patrick.  Well done.

"This is something we've been discussing since the beginning of the season," Maher said. "I wasn't quite sure it was possible, but it was definitely something I wanted to go after.

"It was a total team effort. Aaron Levin, Luke Yeager and Cody Olson had phenomenal games. But above that, everyone played well. The spacing, timing and moving without the ball from the rest of my team was absolutely perfect and the reason I was able to reach this goal."

The record is technically legitimate, but that doesn't mean it's respected.  The more records that are broken, the easier it is for anyone looking at the record books to completely write off anything with "Grinnell" next to it.  It's not hard to figure out that Grinnell paid an inferior opponent to come play them so they could try to break records.  It wasn't broken as a result of a superior athletic accomplishment, but rather the almost inevitable result of manipulating the pace of the game against poor competition. Almost any team could accomplish the same feat if they so desired.

SNC is in the eye of the Roop.  Despite the halftime score of SNC 34, Belwah 21.   :o

No time to watch that one tonight. Had overtime at work, then had to change moms battery and a tire for my wife. 24 hours ago I also announced my write in campaign for city council on the eve of the election office closing; so I had to hit the social media pages for support in the April election.

4 vacancies and only 4 candidates registered so it was perfect timing for a write in campaign to start. The paper is calling it a no-contest election but I guess we will see.

If there was any chance for such a record against a MWC opponenet, it was last night.  My guess is that the executive decision is to only attempt those types of records against teams they will never see again.

Would the NCAA allow the Midwest Conference to experiment playing without refs?  Because if they actually pay the men in stripes who did the Lawrence/Ripon game today, there was a theft today at Alexander Gym.  I have a call into the Outagamie County DA to find out if they will press charges.  >:(    I am sure the MWC does not condone felonies or misdemeanors.

I suspect the three blind mice applied but couldn't get into LU and are now carrying a grudge.  :o

Beloit hit all 19 of their free throws today. Guess I don't need Diane Hendricks approval for City Council.

Maybe Lawrence should cry to the officials more often during the game. It seems to work elsewhere around the league...

And when my business cards come in from VistaPrint I plan on targeting neighborhoods of disenfranchised voters. 4 are stepping down and only 4 candidates are on the ballot. Sounds like a Private Club to me. Perfect time for a write in campaign. Hit the streets late and sneak in by spinning a conspiracy theory. One way or another I'll get to meet Dianne Hendricks. Bling bling. I'm not for sale but I do have a price.
