WARHAWKS: 74
Ripon: 60

Ripon led by as many as fourteen points but the WARHAWKS took a lead in the last half of the second half and stretched it out in the games final minutes for the win.  Sabin was held to ten points.  Ketz scored 19 to lead the Red Hawks.  The WARHAWKS were led by Trinson White's 21 points.

Just saw a story that LU's Sonnleitner is not playing this year. Story only said he notified the coach in October he would not play this season.

I read that in the Post Crescent in Appleton.  I called someone on the LU staff and apparently they found out 2 days before practice started.  This will hurt the Vikes on offense.

The Tharp days seem like a distant memory at LU these days....  Once Tharp's recruits graduated, it has been nothing but mediocrity for the Vikings.

That fact makes me respect what Tharp did at LU even more than I did all those years ago.....  To think he was only an OT loss away from making the Final Four is something that I probably took for granted back then.  It seems like these days it's an accomplishment to just make the MWC Tourney.  When is the last time LU was in the MWC Tournament?  2009 or so?

SNC played very well for their first game of the season. Reinthaler played a great inside-out game and should prove to be a poor-man's Schwoerer this season. DeValk is so smooth with the ball and can get up the court in a hurry. Bobinski didn't play his greatest game, which proves that the Green Knights are much more well rounded than I was thinking. Garner was a fiend defensively and has started to flash his offensive game that not many knew he had. Marshall, and really the entire team, cleaned up the boards well posting a +11 rebound differential against a bigger Oshkosh team. Definitely an encouraging result, now its time to prepare for the defending National Champions on their home floor. It will be fun to see how this group goes on their first road trip and reacts after a win.

Go Green Knights

So about the same time JoJo had to start trying to win with the guys he recruited instead of Tharp's?

Cornell lost their opening night game with local rival Coe College, 80-65.  Point guard Davis lead the way with 25 - he's going to be a problem for teams to stop, but overall, there's not a lot of playmaking for the Rams - only 5 assists as a team for the game.  Outside shooting was also a problem, went 4-19 from 3.

Had 4 players out with injury, 3 of which will see significant minutes (including 6'6" and 6'7" players) eventually.  No seniors on the roster and only 2 juniors (with one out injured).  Was a 4 point game with 6 minutes to play, and the young players hung tough, but it might be tough sledding for Cornell when facing mature teams this winter.  Just a big difference between 18 and 21 year-old bodies.

Question for CCRamFan--do Cornell grads sometimes get confused with grads from Ivy League schools ?  I know graduates from Harvard on the Fox (that would be UW Oshkosh) have a hard time explaining their awesome performance in their post collegiate careers to their Ivy League subordinates.  ;D

Those good teams under Tharp were historic aberrations. I will say this for today's LU buckets team: they have more fans in the stands than back in my student days. And I would kill to see the women do as well as the men have done recently.

Greek Tragedy

I'm taking that as Tharp's teams have been the exception, not the norm for Lawrence teams in the past. Historically, prior to the Tharp days, they have not been very good.

Based on the link, prior to 03-04 season, they made the top 4 twice from 98-99. Before that, the tourney took the top two from each division. They made it twice, 96-97, 97-98. Prior to that, just once in 78-79. So, historically, they apparently weren't that good.

I guess what I was trying to say that since Lawrence struggled before Tharp, he obviously was able to do some things right to "turn things around."

Why would it be so hard to believe that someone else couldn't come in and do the same thing Tharp did instead of sitting there and watching JoJo continue to miss the MWC Tourney year, after year, after year.....
