Beloit fans I recommend that you just pretend the game was really that close and you might not feel as bad as one who saw it in person.

Ouch, that bad?  Or should I say that good since if I'm a fan of any MWC team, it's Ripon.

The African American ref's performance (I don't know his name or number) tonight was laughable.

Knowing exactly who you are talking about, I have seen this guy ref in many games the past couple of years and I have never seen him do a good job.  I think the conference needs to evaluate each ref at least at the end of the season and get rid of the bad ones.

In addition to his attempted heroics at the end of the game, I see that Blaise "Rodman" Rogers has two technical fouls in the last three games for the Scots.  Is this guy a loose cannon?  When it comes down to OT games, 1 or 2 points here or there due to technical fouls might make a difference - dontcha think?    ???

Yes, it was Price who threw the bad pass with seven seconds left. Knowing who was in MC's lineup at the time, my thought for the Scots' play was for Price to inbound it, get himself down on the block and receive a return pass. Unfortunately, the Moten kid made a nice play on what was essentially a 50-50 ball (soccer reference there, sorry).

Rogers' technical was weird. It came after a play that was clearly a foul by Monmouth, when Hebeler was scrambling for a rebound but got there just after Zick and knocked him hard to the floor. The next thing we knew, the ref came over the scorers' table, and the PA guy announced a technical on Rogers.

As I've said, if Rogers REALLY wanted to complain about a call, he could have made a case for a four-point play at the end of regulation.

I was lucky enough to make it up to the "big gay al" as wallace likes to call it last night. It was a hard fought game by both carroll and lawernce. Carroll was once down by i believe 18 points and fought back to 3 or 4 proving that they can play with a top 10 team in the nation. Carroll was just unable to get into a rhythm on the offensive side of the ball. Credit that to lawernce and oh wait the REFS! I thought the stripes did a below average job on the officiating, you think there would be a better job done by the ref's being it such a big game. I dont know nelson why you are complaining about the calls LU didnt get, in the second half the refs went on a 7-0 run, calling 7 straight fouls on carroll it wasnt pretty. Next time there is a big game in the mwc hopefully the refs wont be so up tight and will let the kids play a good clean game and take control when needed.

How did the broadcast of the games turn out. I was busy and missed them. Is their a link where they are archived?

Sorry if you already hashed this topic out.

I was complaining because LU had 4 or 5 team fouls to start off the first five or six minutes of the second have to the ZERO they called on Carroll. Not coincidentally, that was when Carroll started getting back into the game. The difference (I felt) was LU came out of a timeout and instead of taking jump-shots, they went to the basket TRYING to draw a foul. MacGillis twice in a row went at his defender, who was constantly grabbing his jersey and pushing. Also, I'm not sure if you noticed, but Lawrence only took three free-throws in the entire first half. So whether those seven fouls you referenced in the second half were legit or not, it was just as bad the other way in the first half.

Actually, I just looked at the play-by-play, and there were 9 LU fouls called in the first half to just four by Carroll. I don't usually think looking at which team had more fouls called against them is a good indication of whether or not the officials were doing a good job (hey, Grinnell fouls all the time) but don't tell me that LU was getting more calls than Carroll. For a game that seemed as though the refs really let them play, they were calling some really touchey stuff on a lot of Johnson's drives inside.

DON'T GET ME STARTED WITH THE OFFICIATING!!!

I've just come to the realization that our conference has BAD referee's and there is nothing we can do about it.

-Only 3 FT's in the first half for LU....those poor guys, they only ended up with 33 for the game!

Ripon vs. Beloit recap:

Roop, from the "The Roooop," was short but sweet.  The game was so laughable and boring you would have thought Ripon was conference champs three times over.  Beloit looked sluggish, uninspired. Ripon attacked and forced Beloit to take outside jumpshots.  McMullen had a bad shooting night, but most if not all his shots came within the offense.  There is just really not too much to say about this game.  Either Ripon woke up and decided to play how they are capable of playing or Beloit just laid a big stinker.  Trust me, Ripon played well, but they missed a ton of lay-ups and easy shots.

-Brian Schmitting...again...shot 5/6 from the floor and there wasn't anyone on Beloit's team that had a chance to guard him.  I still don't understand why Ripon players refuse to dump it inside more.  The guy could be a huge force to recon with, but they don't give him nearly enough touches.  Until they consitantly feed Schmitting, they are going to be up and down all year.

Roop, Dolph, your thoughts on Beloits play?

-PS, Hinz looked awful...got most of his points from high/low sets.  Didn't look that agressive.  Hinz just doesn't really make anyone that much better around him.  I realize this is one game and he went against Schmitting, but for an All-American, he was unimpressive....no offense.  Oh and what was with Towns? I thought he could play?

Hmm maybe they ended up with so many because Carroll started intentionally fouling at the end to try to get back into the game? Please, you can't just look at a box score and assume you know the whole story of the game.

3 Point Play

I think that its funny that more than half of the referees in the MWC also work the WIAC and I don't see all the whining that is done in here on that board...

Most WIAC posters have trouble spelling "referee."   :o

What were your thoughts on the officiating for the Ripon/Beloit game last night?

MWC4life-
The reason Hinz isn't scoring other than from the high-low is because no one will get him the ball.  I went to last weekend's games and he was fighting for position all game long and they wouldn't give it to him.  On the freak chance he got the ball down low.....boom, double/triple teamed.  His only option is to feed the open guy to take the shot.  The reason he doesn't seem to make anybody better around him is because THEY CAN"T SHOOT!  There are so many guys trying to take horrible shots instead of working the ball around and looking for a good shot.  If Hendry started playing aggressive like last year it would create more opportunities for everyone, because that would create more options for the guards.  Swinging the ball around 8 times and then throwing the ball up with 3 seconds on the shot clock isn't my idea of a good offensive series.  That right there is the lone reason they lost to IC.  No body (other than Hinz) wants the ball in their hands with the game on the line so they just throwit around until someone HAS to take the shot.  Get Hendry down low with Hinz and let them feed each other when they get double teamed.  Moreeasy baskets and less shots for the other guys!

Scottie:

I am both a WIAC and MWC fan.  I am also a WIAC graduate so your comment is not appreciated.  I am now on a negative karma spree of epic proportions on you.

I agree the refs were horrible last night.  They seem worse in 2006 than ever before.  I don't see the same guys all the time in WIAC games I attend, but there is some overlap.

The LU style is so frenetic on defense, comparing it to the WIAC isn't fair.  With the exception of Point, LU hasn't had any trouble with WIAC teams.  In my view, the WIAC teams rely more on brawn and outside shooting and less on defense, with a few exceptions.  It's easier to ref a WIAC game in my opinion.  The LU defensive style causes lazy refs to miss things--and they sure did on both sides of the ball last night.
Not just fouls--traveling was rampant--both teams--and not called.
