The game tonight looks dead even on paper and when that is the case, the edge usually goes to the home team.  Here's hoping NCC can get it done in a tough draw tonight.

Justin, regarding St. Thomas, here is a post I made on the CCIW board today if that helps, regarding their stats and stuff.

Looks Alot like Carroll stats.A dominant big man,and 1 very good guard. What does their bench do as far as minutes and points ???

What is it with LU people and beards? Some of the best beards (oxymoron if you ask me...by best I mean huge Grizzly Adams beard that a bird could nest in) i've ever seen were on LU folks.

This'll be one of the few times I mention non-basketball issues on the board, but I have to say we Lawrence students pride ourselves on our beards as much as our basketball team. Before I left for a term abroad in London earlier this year, I was the two-time defending beard-growing champion of Lawrence, and I can tell you the competition comes from everywhere. We like to think our basketball team took a hint from us bearders: yes, natural talent is nice, but a "Grizzly Adams" beard comes from hard work, hustle, determination, and good three-point shooting. Right Vicar?

Oh yea, congrats to the Tommies, and I'm officially getting nervous again. Hoping for a good game.

St Thomas did this with the starting five.  Only two non-starters used in the game Dwyer for 2 min 0 Pts Weaver 17 min 7 pts.  Probably the key stat: Points off turnovers-NCC-M 9,UST-MEN 20 together with just hot, hot shooting by St Thomas in 2nd half:

TOTAL FG% 1st Half: 11-25 44.0%   2nd Half: 15-25 60.0%    Game: 52.0%
3-Pt. FG% 1st Half:  2-7  28.6%   2nd Half:  3-9  33.3%   Game: 31.2%
F Throw % 1st Half:  2-2  100 %   2nd Half: 17-21 81.0%   Game: 82.6%

Hot shooting and points off turnovers got UST back into the game but making the free throws won it at the end

John Gleich

Part of St. Thomas' hot shooting had to do with NCC trying to play up tempo and press to try and get back in the game (thus leading to easy buckets) but they did shoot well in the second half, over-all.

You're right PS and the Cardinals are just not an up tempo team.  Seemed to run out of gas at the end when had to run run run

Should be a heck of a matchup tomorrow at Whitewater as Carroll takes on the CCIW's best, (accourding to Justin)  Carroll is going to have play very well and find a way to win a close one.  Welcome to the board Justin, it is always nice to add a former comet even if we disagree on MWC teams.  As a Carroll fan I would love to get another shot at LU mostly because it means both MWC teams have played well in the tourney.  Best of luck to the Pioneers and those brokeback vikings, we will hopefully see you again soon.

Also, I don't think LU should be able to host a sectional even though they are deserving, Alex just isn't big enough.  Does one of the 4 teams in the sectional have to host or could it be at a neutral floor?

A point of view from D3Hoops.com article:  2006  Tournament Preview  by Pat Coleman and crew
http://www.d3hoops.com/salem/06/preview.htm

"Lawrence is the No. 1 team in Division III and the last remaining unbeaten team, but circumstances are not in their favor. If they're only selling 1,100 seats for their second-round home game then they are not likely to be permitted to host a sectional, and will be sent somewhere like UW-Whitewater or Illinois Wesleyan. And that's if Lawrence survives a tough second-round matchup..."

I'd follow-up the above that on other boards the feeling is that the sectional won't likely be on the west coast.  Another possibility would be Augustana in Rock Island should Augustana win its regional.  Rock Island is another Midwest Regional Host site; and, Augie's Carver Arena was the site for the NCAA Div III National Final Four from 1997 - 1980. (The assumption here is also that all the above colleges filed an application to host a sectional.  I don't know whether each did or did not.)

Based on prior recent years, the NCAA and the Midwest Committee will most probably select the school with the best combination of arena size, prior postive experience hosting tournaments and travel accomodations (hotels, airports, restaurants) which would maximize student/fan enjoyment, minimize lost class time and yield best revenue to NCAA.

Division III unfortunately does not select a pure neutral site other than for the Final Four.  A college can in its application, however,  request the approval to use a neutral site if it can provide good reason(s) for the need to use a neutral site within the immediate geographic area to the college (for example, College has a non-standard home court but it regularly uses a standard court located a short distance away for conference games.)

I was at the St. Thomas/NCC game.  NCC looked awful.  If they are the 10th ranked team in the country....wow.

Simmons thier star is athletic, but man is he dumb as a rock when it comes to basketball smarts.  He must have thrown 5 balls away, just away noone even close tonight, which frankly probably made the difference.  He made some stupid fouls ending NCC runs too...not good

St thomas is athletic and can shoot the lights out when hot.  Number 2 in the nation from behind the arc.  They re quite streaky though.

Rosenfelt is tall and lanky, and a good player, but he seems to shy away from contact on his shots...likes to fade away.  I think Braier will eat him for dinner.

I like the matchups LU has with what I saw, and it could either be a really close game if St Thomas hits its shots, or if they are cold, LU could win by 30.

Neither team impressed me a ton...Carroll is easily better then both of these teams.

Better Dead then Red

It looks like it's been a tough day on this board, without Scottie around to keep eveyone in line.  Sorry, duty called...I'll try to so better tomorrow.

falco1610 and other Carroll fans making the trip:

I'd be more than happy to meet any fans down there.  I look like the guy in my picture...probably be wearing the Pointer hooded sweatshirt too (but without the Walnut and Bronze).  Feel free to introduce yourself to me.  I'll be with two tall guys and another friend.  One guy is 6'7" (Whitewater fan) or so and the other guy is former Pointer John Gleich (he's tall too).  The clock keeper at Whitewater is BadgerWarhawk and he can point you towards me if you want to say hi.

Also, I still have five extra tickets for anyone who doesn't have tickets yet.  :D  Blue light special for $6.00!
