Hey Larry people,

How come I haven't seen posts about the CCIW bias for having the Rose story on the front page for so many days?  I've been expecting them; it's sad I have to call for them.

You are an instigator aren't you.........

What do you mean?  That story has been up there for like, what, five days now.  I haven't done the math, but this one story alone may have gotten more face time than the entirety of d3hoops coverage on Lawrence University.  I just assumed someone would be saying something about it, right here on this board, home of Larry and Grotberg (and one delusional Beloit supporter).

NPU has always had a sizeable population of students from western Washington, and Seattle has been a popular destination for postcollegiate types for a couple of decades now. Because of those two facts, I have a number of college friends and acquaintances who live, or have lived, in Seattle. They would strongly dispute your statement that the city isn't "all that nice". On the contrary, lots of young people consider the Emerald City to be one of the hippest and coolest places to live in America -- especially young people who crave the excitement, opportunity, and diversity of a place like Seattle and don't wish to live in a suburb.

Tacoma? Not so much. By comparison it's a rather down-at-the-heels industrial burg that lacks the social and cultural amenities (and the state's major university) that Seattle offers. Even if someone does choose to live in a tony Tacoma suburb such as South Hill or Gig Harbor, he or she may not consider Tacoma all that great a place into which to commute every day.

Everything's relative, though. In spite of the derisive nickname of "Tacompton" seen over in the NWC room (a nickname I've heard used for the city before by Seattleites), I can think of worse cities in which to live and/or work. Bloomington-Normal isn't among them, however.

I know it's supposed to be cool, but I didn't think it was all that amazing. Which was disappointing, because when I was growing up, it was always the theoretical place I wanted to live some day. (It was probably at least partially a case of inflated expectations, it isn't terrible or anything.) Whidbey Island is super nice though. And I think taking a ferry to work every day would be super cool. Port Townsend has a great historic feel, and it has a crazy awesome yarn store. :D For cities, I'd pick San Diego, DC, Chicago, or San Fransisco over Seattle. Hopefully, when I go up to Portland, OR next month it won't be as disappointing as Seattle was.  :-\

Whidbey Island, the final resting place of my old sub, well at least her sailplanes.  They are part of the Swords to Plowshards sculptre there.

My read is that Pat dislikes LU and that's the bottom line.  The only coverage all year was on the radio show with Tharp AFTER we won like 18 games straight.  I believe the others I have spoken too--LU Nut and Titan 2000--feel the same way.  We've moved on.  You can't have our coach and we can't have your discounts on Metamucil.  Everyone gives a little and it all works out.

But if the Roop feels differently, we have all bowwed down and will follow his lead on this.  Roop ?

The Roop

Sounds like somebody needs me to open a new box of Roop Flakes. Roop Flakes, never sugar coated, never will be........................

Closest I ever came to talking about the supposed "Coleman Mafia" theory was that I thought Hoopsville was a bit biased. I didn't explain myself that well at the time and got some heat from it. I didn't mean that Hoopsville was biased from a favorite team/favorite conference standpoint, rather they were a bit biased in their coverage. But look a map, they have to be.

Most people associated with the broadcast are on the east coast, D.C. area specifically, so D3Hoops.com simply can't dispatch people out to cover every hot topic. TitanQ is the correspondent for the Midwest/West Regions and does a fine job of it. But he's tied to the IWU schedule because he does the color on their radio broadcasts.

Would I like to see better coverage of our area? Sure, but it's not realistic at the moment. That may change however as a party involved could be moving to this region for next season. Don't know all the details but it's work related as I understand it.

You also have to keep in mind that it is the off season now and not much is happening at the moment. Braier getting a work out with the Packers isn't exactly front page material. Sounds like he enjoyed it so I'm glad for him. I had a work out with the Expos after I got out of the Marine Corps but I don't recall any of my fans crying to MLB when I wasn't offered a contract. So MWC Fans, lets not make issues out of non-issues.

In the coming years it is very likely that you will all tire of seeing a Beloit story on the front page of D3Hoops.com for weeks on end.

Hey, IWU is not the CCIW... we have lots of other schools with much younger fan bases.  :P

There are some west region guys that I'd like to see on Hoopsville more. In my opinion, the midwest gets plenty of coverage from people who've seen the games. The Great Lakes is hurting cause Jared doesn't see enough, and the West is hurting, cause Bob only gets to see a couple WIAC games a year, if that. I'd love it if we could get an SCIAC regular like tigersports (racism and all... see SCIAC board if that doesn't make sense) or a NWC guy, or a WIAC/MIAC guy to join the party. Since the west region is my home region, I'd like to see it better represented.

And proud of LU, while I am the biggest supporter of the MWC deserves respect club that is outside of the league, the idea that Pat is biased against Lawrence and the MWC idea is just plain ridiculous. As I already stated, he was on the committee that chose Chris Braier as the Jostens winner. And that's just one of the glaring reasons why it doesn't make sense to continually attack him about it. There are a few hoopsville guys  who made some "the MWC is Lawrence" comments, which just plain isn't true, but it certainly wasn't Pat. And I definitely wouldn't say that the Hoopsville guys speak officially for D3hoops.com. I think there's some misplaced latent animosity around that really needs to go away.  :-[

Even if HoopsFan's joke WAS really funny.  :D

Dang!  I hit the wrong button when Pat's post was called to my attention - I'll try to reconstruct:

As The Roop very sensibly noted (raise your hand if you thought the words "The Roop" and "sensibly" would ever appear in the same sentence from Mr. Ypsi - just kidding, Oh all-knowing and all-powerful one!), this is the OFF-season.  Stories get bumped off the front page when a new, big story comes along - in the IN-season this often happens in less than a day; in the OFF-season it may take weeks.

Follow the front page for the next few months - I suspect the stories that follow Ron Rose will average WELL over a week.

There are enough legitimate issues in d3 (or even d3.com) without creating phony ones

And on the plus side, he and the Puget Sound coach are much better looking than the average coach/player of either gender that usually gets stuck up there... (cough)  :D :-[ :-X :D :D :D :P ::)

OMG. What if Braier signs with the Bears................. I don't think Grotberg could help the Packers at all then.

HF's quip aside about the Bay Area being the real-gone place for hepcats, Daddy-O, Portland has been the hot city on the West Coast for quite awhile. For years now I've heard people from the Great Northwest refer to it as "the new Seattle". But now it appears that Denver is taking over as the new destination for cutting-edge youth on the left half of the U.S. map. You can usually tell how hot a destination is out west by how many California license plates you see on the street, the idea being that young Californians are always the first to jump on a trend and that the Golden State is not the sun-kissed paradise it once was.

(One of my best friends from NPU went to law school in San Diego and then moved to Seattle in the early nineties, where both of his siblings lived. His brother told him to get his license plates changed as soon as he moved into his new apartment in Seattle's U District. My friend said, "Why? Changing your plates is usually the last thing you get around to doing when you move to a new state." His brother replied, "Because if you don't, someone's liable to see your Cali plates and put a rock through your windshield if you have it parked on the street." Apparently that sort of thing is not uncommon in places such as Seattle, Portland, Denver, Boise, etc.)

As to predicting whether or not you'll be disappointed by Portland, April, I'm afraid that I can't. There's not much insight I can provide about someone who has just used the words "crazy awesome yarn store". Believe it or not, there are times when you are even more inscrutable than the Roop.  :D
