Roop: depends on which poll you look at. They are 17th in the DIII News poll, receiving votes on this one. Therefore, they are nationally ranked.

No poll counts other than the d3hoops.com poll.  Maybe eventually some other group will get its act together and put out a decent poll; it just hasn't happened yet.

I noticed last night on their website that the "first year" PC craze has struck Grinnell too. Since they pay all their players you'd think they'd just call them rookies and be done with it.  ;D

Isn't the point of not calling them freshmen because the term "freshmen" is gender specific?  I have no problem with them making the standard term "first year student," but if they're listing a year in school for the MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM, they can stick with the freshmen, because they certainly aren't freshwomen (unless you know something that I don't?)

Roop, not that I didn't trust you, but upon hearing Grinnell's roster was posted, I had to check it out for myself.

Checking out their freshpeople, Jordan Scheibel stood out to me because he is 6-6. What stood out even more is that he has no hometown listed.

If he ever starts a game, I hope ala old pro wrestling, they announce him as "From parts unknown,  Jordan Scheibel"

"Coincidence or not but a full time AD arrives at Beloit and suddenly they have two good recruiting years.  Perhaps the administration is not running people off as much as they used to. "

Or perhaps she is just holding peoples feet to the fire demanding that they target more kids, identify those who are capable of getting in, follow up as appropriate, not waste time on players who have no intention of playing at the D3 level, etc.

The Roop

That's certainly a possibility too. I've heard her popularity varies greatly depending on whom you ask so I'm taking that to mean she's shaking things up. Whatever works is fine by me.

Knowing what I do now I can say that the academic profile of the typical Beloit student, gpa, ACT etc. is about what I thought. However, the cut off line for getting in is a little higher than I expected. In short, if you didn't apply yourself in high school Beloit College isn't going to take you regardless of athletic ability.

Targeting more kids doesn't always produce more that are qualified. But the staff is after more people than I was previously aware of. Theoretically I may have learned this by recommending someone to them and they may have said "great, we are looking at two others in that conference already". And then lets pretend I work with this kids dad who knows that one of the others may be getting a partial football ride somewhere. If that were the case I would certainly pass the information along so the staff could decide whether to pass on him or bring in Coach Brann to recruit him as a two sport athlete. Theoretically.

On the realistic side of things many do get scared off by the tuition at Beloit and don't bother applying. I don't have a solution for that. Although my initial recommendation would be to ignore the tuition cost, go through the application process and see what type of financial aid package is offered. If you've distinguished yourself academically the $33,000 a year price tag is irrelevant. I know that Towns and Hinz went there for less than a WIAC school and I have no reason to doubt my source on that one.

Roop:

How exactly do these discounts in tuition occur--are they grants due to lack of capacity, academic performance, and how are these determined?  For example, if Hinz and I both enrolled at the same time, same GPA, same economic circumstances, would we pay the same tuition?

Or if I scored 11 points in garbage time vs LU at Alex my senior year could I get the same deal?  ::)

Exactly how financial aid is determined I honestly don't know. Only that private schools generally have much more money available than do public schools. Unless we bring Clarke College into the discussion. Although I'm sure that if you had applied at the same time, with the same qualifications and economic circumstances that you would have received the same discounts.

And since you would have gone to Beloit, you would have been as distracted by "the Angels" as was Hinz that night.

Bopper didn't exactly have a stellar performance either.

Bad news and good news Angel fans...

Bad news...most of the angels that kept us entertained in so many MWC blowouts have all graduated and moved on to other things...I know, i cried a few tears over this one.

However, like the Lawrence basketball team, the angels do not disapear into the night...like the team, they don;t rebuild, they reload.  I've seen the 2006-07 team picture, and will include a link below.  While my favorites have all gone...there may be some new blood for all of you to enjoy.

Thanks for sharing Larry but I think there's too much light in the pic, specifically backlighting, to do anybody justice. I say this not to offend any of the Angels but because it makes it look like Tharp gained 30 pounds. Somehow I don't think that's true. Similarly Brian McCauley reminds me of a bad pic of me, yet I know he and I look nothing alike.

I suggest that the Angels have a photo shoot down at the Nickel where the lighting is much better. Just be sure to post the date and time of that event. And keep the cover charge reasonable.  ;)

Tharp hit the weights hard this summer in an effort to help him in the World Long Drive Chamionships.  He made it to the semifinals but lost with three out of bounds in that round.

The secret of gobucs "Prescott" haiku can now be revealed. Work, previous commitments and the fact that I live in an apartment prevented me from immediately burying him when he was put down. In the mean time I had to wrap him and keep him in the freezer. So yes, he was stone cold as the poem suggested.

As of 7:00AM (or so) central time he was properly laid to rest in the northwoods of WI, less than 40 miles from his place of birth. Pretty remarkable when you consider that I lived in Kentucky when I first got him. Additionally, my uncle was still in Florida and didn't buy the property until 1998. The old saying of "no matter how far out you get, you eventually come home" really rings true right now. The cats and I lived with my uncle for a 10 month period over 2000 and 2001 so it was their home too. I wanted out of Kentucky but needed a place to go. He had some health concerns so taking us in was good for everybody at the time.

Although it might not be legal, it is possible that I erred regarding my uncles property line and buried Prescott on public land so I will always be able to visit him in the future.

Good bye lil boogers, I miss ya...............
