What a fine weekend for Grinnell Men's basketball! First win against Larry since the triple ot game here four years ago. Larry definitely misses the horses inside, but still play some solid defense outside. Grinnell just finally decided they were not gonna lose this ballgame. Lots of heroes  in that game. Grotberg with 46 pts, but he will be remembered for the trey with .2 seconds on the clock that tied the game. Ticus with 3 straight treys to start the game and steals in bunches, but he will be remembered for DESIGNING and executing the amazing inbounds pass to Long with less than two seconds remaining in regulation. Chamberlain HUNG ON TO THE BALL!!!!! but he will be remembered for igniting the offense with his slam dunk when Grinnell was still behind. Long with 30 points, but he will be remembered for sinking ft after ft in the ot. Davey with solid play but he will be remembered for taking his 5th foul at the end of regulation that actually ended up giving GC a chance to go to ot.
The whole team will be remembered for the incredible, incendiary effort at the start of ot that ended the game early in the extra time despite the best efforts of Larry. Decker with just a few minutes at the end...whats up with that, anyway? I thought he was supposed to be unstoppable! Larry will be back but GC just really wanted this game.
GC looked tired-as did BC, actually-in the Saturday game. Everyone stepped up as necessary though and only proved how good this team-even when dog tired-could/can/will be. Horton is VERY impressive-probably the best big man I've seen play this year-including the Carthage crew. Didn't see the bigs from UWW and O to compare, but this guy is something. Also nice to see and chat briefly with Gobucs Jr.! Glad to hear school is going well! (remember, you DID NOT see me if you meet my Grandson, but with my luck you already did when you got back to DSM! ;D :D ;D)

Again, Lots of heroes, but a true team effort for GC in both games.

Jeffp:

Did you notice that Grotberg traveled on the 3 pointer at the buzzer.  Three full steps.
Those refs were almost as bad as your scorer's table.  It was hilarious hearing the LU fans letting the homer scorer's table know who the foul was on, what the right score was, the clock errors, etc.

Math must be a philosophy class at Grinnell. ::)

Give Grinnell credit for knocking down so many shots.  Both teams got job'd by the officials.  LU in the first half and it finally even'd out in the second half, I thought that the Grinnell admin's were going to pull their hair out with all the ft's being missed.  Lu is still growing and one would hope that they would after so many close losses already this season.  After the first couple minutes against Knox LU started playing like they should yesterday.  Dekker even stepped up and hit a couple trey's.. I love the rainmakers that he throws up.  Page decided to take control and once Maclin got in foul trouble in the first half that was the turning point.  Hope Kroeger will be ok for this weekend after the sprained ankle, and Hurley better start delivering on his 30 point promise one of these days

LUMAN80 is absolutely right; both teams were victims of officiating in this game. If G'berg traveled on the last play, I can point to 15 uncalled travels by Larry's guards scattered throughout. Horrible officiating, no doubt, but horrible both ways, and two of these guys are usually pretty fair. The REALLY bad one was at GC for the first, and we hope, LAST time. I've said it many times before; the MWC deserves better than what it gets...from one league location to another.
As for the scorers bench, two of the regulars (one IS a math prof, btw) are still gone and the subs were, well, subs. We were just as frustrated as you were by the clockwork. Both were replaced on Saturday by very efficient, experienced, top notch people...who still made mistakes with the clock.
Both teams played well. Don't spoil a great win and great performances by these two teams by playing the "ref card/scoring table card", ok? The game was determined by the players, not the oafs or the scorers bench.

Enjoy it now, Ripon finishes 7-9 in conference. They can't play as a team for 3 years and suddenly they can............. Sounds like a problem or two graduated. A good coach would have fixed that two years ago. Then again, Gillespie didn't care if Dowden went there or not. I guess Baseball is the priority at UW-Ripon Tech.

Oh yeah, Ripon Graduated 2 people from last year.  Neither one started and only 1 played regularly.   Oh, is it possible, maybe probable that sophomores and juniors started becoming leaders and unselfish????

I have no idea who Dowden is (sorry)....but great player or not, maybe Coach G just didn't think he was a Ripon player.  A coach doesn't get a kid because he doesn't fit the "system" (no offense to Grinnell).

I wanted to come on and congratulate St Norberts on a great weekend going on the road and sweeping two games but then it hit me that St Norberts basketball does not exist (and not just because there has not been a Norberts poster on this site for the entire season.)

I realized that this program and its scores must be the creation of some college age internet gurus who heard about the old Slippery Rock football score reporting and are now sending in scores for a mythical SNC  squad.

This has to be the case because otherwise there is no explanation for SNC currently being 4-3 in the MWC.

I mean, after all, I have heard time and time again that a coach can only do so much so given the fact that Norberts returned a very limited amount of talent from a team that finished at the bottom last year hired their coach when most of recruiting was finished and added only a couple of undersized players to their roster this season what we are being told is happening up in DePere simply can not really be going on.

Yeah?!

And your favorite college team is only 2000 miles away...

Nice burn.
Oh man, I can't believe I burned dhf right before she gets elected as a hall-of-famer!

CONGRATS, diehardfan.

Dolph,

I can't agree with you more. I watched the Monmouth game on Penn/Atlantic and saw Coach Youngblood shoot all of Beloits free throws himself. His 15 of 26 shooting from the charity stripe in a 7 point loss was an absolute disgrace. Since I had to work night shift on Saturday I couldn't watch the Grinnell game but somebody that did told me Coach C also shot all of Beloits lay ups in that one.

Enough already please. FYI, Beloit did beat the non-existent St. Norbert team you mentioned.

Like I said when SNC hired him, I have a strong feeling that Gary Grzesk is going to turn around the fortunes of the St. Norbert basketball program. I was very impressed with his Lakeland teams.

Boy, just took a look at the pick 'em board...I guess I should've put my picks in, because there would've been at least ONE guy picking MC to beat the Hawks...shame on you Scottie and Maverick!!

Hey, cut me some slack!  Without Terwelp, I was hoping for a split...   ;)

But, KUDOS to my Scots for pulling out a weekend sweep.  Here's hoping the team continues to keep it's mojo.

scottie - My thoughts exactly!  The split without Terwelp was what I hoped for, but getting both wins over the weekend was great for the Scots.  Not sure whether it will happen or not since it's a road weekend up north, but another weekend sweep would be real nice.

It doesn't appear to me that MWCTV is as all-inclusive as their original claims. How can I see all the action if they're not covering all the games  ??? Hopefully they add to their schedule before the weekend because I can't make it to Beloit this time around. What a coincidence. Sounds like an Anti-Roop Conspiracy is afoot.

Anti-Roop?

That is an untenable position for the MWC to be in.

Perhaps you should contact the league instead of griping here.

Because griping here is more fun and it will raise awareness to the situation more than a single complaint to the league would.

Eh, I heard a rumor that I got a few sympathy votes from a few Midwest region HOFers who thought you were being a jerk. Maybe I should thank you. :P How else can you explain my selection? ???

Jerk?! I resemble that remark.  ;)
I would like to point out something to those voters...SHE STARTED IT!!! I WASN"T GONG TO SAY ANYTHING UNTIL SHE POINTED OUT HOW NICE THE WEATHER IS WHERE SHE LIVES!
