RR34 - Obviously I'm picking the Scots at home, but a good indicator to watch for will be the loose balls and rebounds...if MC can control those, it will tell me that we're being proactive and not reactive, and maybe MC will dictate the game more than GC.
Interesting observation. MC outrebounded GC in the first game, but not by too much. The more MC gets the less chances GC gets to find a  rhythm.

Let us know how this aspect of the game turned out.

One thing I've noticed about GC in the last 5-6 games is a very high level of disciplined play - even when the shots aren't falling, the squads keep the play moving. Coach A has added some interesting twists to his scoring approach this year and it's fascinating to watch the team switch between the (for us) traditional 3 pt game to less  traditional methods. It's also been fun to watch the effect on the other teams.

If GC's head is in the game, Monmouth may have a workout tonight. Let's hope the GC players aren't focused on the weekend's battles.

It also must be maddening for coaches to try and find tendencies in GC's system.  If you look at GC's conf. losses (aside from the LF game - that box score didn't make any sense), each team shot at least 65% from the field and made a good % of their ft's.

In MC's loss, they shot a pedestrian 58% from the field and 70% from the line, so maybe that's part of it...but then you look at assists and turnovers, and even though MC had 31, they also had 40 assists.  St. Norbert had 22 assists and 28 to's (and wins by 25), and Carroll had 35 assists and only 23 to's (but only won by 2).

Just some food for thought...

Maddening would be one way to describe Glasgow's demeanor in the last GC/MC matchup!   ;D

Nice to see some good chatter on this game.  Should be a great match up.  Will watch the webcast, hopefully.

Word on the street, and in cyberspace, is that Monmouth is going for a massive student crowd at Glennie Gym tonight.  I hope they don't end up right behind the Grinnell bench...   :o

Go Scots!

The Roop

Speaking of the word on the street. What's behind the sudden emergence of the K/G Dolph ?? Does he know something the rest of us don't ?? I've spun an interesting scenario but without the appropriate lead in it wouldn't make much sense.

In other news.................. It sounds like one of the MWC entrants in the Recruit X Lottery has fallen by the wayside. I knew of 2 and possibly a 3rd. I guess they really blew the doors down in the early going but not a word since. You get what you pay for and when you don't pay for NRO Street Agent Services you don't get much.

Wonder which Carroll team will show up at Flood Arena tonight. All I know is they won't be facing the same Beloit team they did the last time and I doubt Carroll can equal their shooting performance of the previous meeting. Roop Vegas says take Beloit -4.5

They have a losing record on the road this year, they're only 5-3 at Alex, and they've been remarkably quiet on this board this year,...

chirp, chirp, chirp, ***crickets making noise***   ;D :D ;)

Anyway, enough of the "observation".  ;)  It's interesting to see all the Grinnell talk.  I guess that's what happens when they are in the running for a MWC championship.  Are there not too many Carroll fans?  I thought the flood gates would open after their win on Saturday vs. Lawrence.  It'll be interesting to see what Ripon team shows up too.

How have the number of TO's that GRINNELL changed between wins and losses?

Or what was Grinnell's shooting percentage for the game?  How many possessions/shots, etc did Grinnell get?

These are as important (and sometimes overlooked) when analyzing Grinnell IMO.

Now, it does appear that they have definately been playing a bit different style, and it MAY be harder to see tendencies or weaknesses, but especially with the dependance that the System has had on certain results, OTHER stats may be tell-tale signs that these results are not being met.  In other words, if Grinnell turns the ball over 30 times, that's 30 possessions they're not able to get up a shot, and since the System relies to heavily on getting more shots...

Just a thought!

PS:

Covering a number of topics:

Grinnell recent success

If the oafs actually call the games, GC has about 4 more losses this year and are not in the running for the MWC title.

Systemfan86 and Jeffp are probably at the game now, but when they read this there will be flames flying through the D3hoops server.  I don't care, I speak the truth.  Pat, if the server starts on fire, I'll pay for it.

LU loss prediction

As for my LU losing out prediction, I rescind that.  We have one game vs. Beloit remainng.

Ripon "talent"

And someone mentioned earlier that the "talent" as missing at the Ripon game.  Most of the Ripon coeds work at the Mansion on Main for their physical education and psychology credits, so they were likely at work.

Quandt house of horrors?

And lastly, outside the MWC, I understand that the Titans made the basset hounds look pretty bad last week at the Quandt Vistiing Fan Abuse Center.  I couldn't attend, I couldn't afford the $500 seat license.

I guess there wasn't a need by MC to try to foul Grotberg out...

Final from Glennie Gym:

Grinnell 127
Monmouth 111

I'll let FS13. Maverick & Schwannie recap since I just saw the second half from my computer screen.

What I will state is that it didn't appear like there was much energy in the house...

Quoting from one of my favorite movies, "You are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity."

In it's own odd way, I enjoy those whining comments since they mostly come out when Grinnell is doing well. No one seems to mind as much when Grinnell isn't winning. Whine away, T2K, it's becoming music to my ears.  :D

RiponRed34

RC 25  SNC 25

A really slowed down game.  Ripon is playing very good defense.  FT shooting hurting the Redhawks.  SNC looks solid.  Very disciplined.  Ripon is looking to go to Schmitting a lot!

Scots4

Poor effort by Monmouth tonight. Terrible at the line and couldnt finish a shot. Also, the team was let down by the player who was supposed to have another big game. What a wasted game for the Scotties.

Grotbergs foul issues were a non factor because with the way they play defense allows them to hide him on the court. Believe me that was in the mind of the Scotties but he was just never around.

I feel that the refs poorly officiated this game. Did it cost Monmouth the game? Definitly not. However, I just believe that it is terrible how they let the "system" dictate the way they officiate. Believe me, this is not just sour grapes. I just feel like a defender should be rewarded when they move their feet and keep their man in front of them. Alot of the times tonight, the Grinnell player was the one initiating the contact at the basket and they were rewarded with a foul call.

Good luck to the Pioneers the rest of the season. Monmouth needs to win out to have a snowballs chance. If nothing else, we will look to win out to help the South earn the #1 seed in the playoffs.
