Go Scots!

Fighting Scots 13, if you had a different first name, we could start calling you guys "Karma and Greg."

Good discussion points, all, systemfan86:

POY -- Doesn't necessarily have to be from the league's top team, but should at least be from a playoff team, IMO. I'm going to say to close too call right now between Grotberg, Schmitting and Drury.

COY -- If St. Norbert makes the playoffs, I'd say their new coach. If not, it could be Arseneault.

Noise in the MWC tournament? Unfortunately, that sound might be "thud."

Sorry, but when it comes to looks, I'm not watching the opposition ... I'm watching our cheerleaders!

Coach with most style? Let's just say this ... after he retires, this will be renamed the Conger Award.

The Scots really need a true post, so Schmitting would be the logical trade to see if he could lead Monmouth to a 5-0 finish.

And, finally:

I think Maverick IS right to a degree; seen now in retrospect. The year mentioned, we had a penitrator who for whatever reason was eratic getting to the hoop. He had some absolutely amazing moves around and under the basket, but he just wasn't consistent with them. Grinnell now has 3 great penitrators from the guard court and at least one small forward as well. That is a luxury for Grinnell-one that I never recall GC having.

That said ... Schwannman, I don't think trying to get the isolation down low is anything unique to System ball. In fact I would guess it is a goal for every team in the country when they try to go inside. So I' don't think you can really lessen the impact of what he does because it is within the system!

In fact, NOTHING Grinnell does is really all that unique-outside of the sub pattern. What makes it unique is the way this stuff is strung together and the speed at which it is played. Sorry, but I don't think any player from GC should be handicapped because they play system ball. After all, every team in the conference pretty much has to play system ball when they play Grinnell and I don't hear any talk of handicapping opponents' players for what they accomplish againt Grinnell.

My point is that Grotberg is a fine player and would be anywhere. No one has to agree, but we are beating this to death as some else said. We are also ignoring the great contributions from Arseneault, Long, Chamberlain, Schmidt, Ticus, Langenhan, et al. Without them, little of what G'berg does would be possible, just as it is with the standouts on any team. Without a great supporting cast, none of what they do would be...well...as easy.

I was just looking at the roster last night, Jeff.  The big three are all coming back, but GC is losing some key role players next year.  Any word on recruiting yet?

Early can atest to this story:

We had a player on our team that could shoot as good as any player I've seen in college.  I mean he'd hit fallaway shot out of bounds in practice and hit nothing but net.  In JV games he'd score in the 30's everytime and sometimes hit 40.  Great shooter.  But when he was put in the real game if he missed a shot or two, coach Gillespie would pull him.  I think he was thinking too much and it translated on to the court.  Maybe that was coach G's fault, but ultimately that's the reality a lot of players face.  They don't get 5 or 6 chances to hit a three before they get hot.  Early and I would always talk about how great he'd be at Grinnell.  I really believe he would average atleast 27 points a game at Grinnell.  Early, you agree?

With all that being said, please don't feel I'm disrespecting Grinnell.  I really do respect how the system gives a lot of players a chance to play and win.  And for the most part (not their fans) their players are as classy as they come...coach A too.

Also, I feel if Grinnell sweeps this weekend, the championship is as good as theirs'.  Ripon, LU, and CC all play each other once in the last three games....tough stretch.

I still have nightmares of guarding him in practice, him hitting a rediculous shot, and the SCREAM from coach came,  :o "JJJOOOOOOOOE!!!"
OOOhhh shiffers up my spine.

27 a game.

Hoops,
How do you hate Peyton Manning???

At the risk of sounding like Linda Richman...

If you were going to build a team out of MWC players to take to the NCAA tournament, who's on the team? For the sake of consistency, pick ten.

Scmitting and Drury leap to mind immediately. I like Grotberg - huge surprise there - but I might take Arseneault depending on how I want to use Drury. I might take both GC guards and alternate them. I need help on filling out the forwards - Terwelp is someone I'd consider. What about Maclin? Does Chamberlain get some consideration?

I don't see enough games to do this one well. And yes, we can presume that the team would be running a more traditional offense and defense.

Unless you're from Indy, how can you not?  I mean, I love the goofy commercials and all, but I just can't help but root against him.  It's like it's inborn.  Somehow he's been given the mantle of both the Yankees and Red Sox.  Everyone likes to root against him, even though he can't win anything.

By the way, all of my haikus this week will end with the line "Peyton Manning sucks."

Just read an article in the Des Moines Register-sorry i don't see it online yet-that says Davey Arseneault has been nominated for the Cousy Award for point guards. He is one of 17 nominations nationwide in all 3 divisions. There are only two DIII nominations-Davey and Andrew Olson from Amherst.

Congrats to Davey!!!

You can go to  <www.cousyaward.com> for more info, and I think (I haven't looked yet) to vote.

That's an amazing award, especially as a sophomore in d3 to be nominated is quite impressive.

I guess that answers my question on who to put on the ten players to take to the NCAA. Drury moves to shooting and little a goes to point. Having TTMG off the bench is no shame.

systemfan86

Not sure about this, but here goes...

If I have to build a team, I probably start Schmitting (RC), Maclin (KC), Walker (LFC), Drury (CC), and Arseneault (GC).

I have Hurley (LU), Horton (BC), Rogers (MC), Grotberg (GC), and McMullen (RC) on the bench, and I happily go 10 deep in the game.

Waddya think?

I completely agree on the commercials, they are funny  :D....but I cannot hate him because of those commercails.  The guy is humble to have those out there.....he publicly humiliates himself nation wide.  In this day and age of athletes any guy who isn't getting arested, doing drugs, etc.  I have to like.

I see your point too though....

Top Ten MWC
1. Schmitting - C (gotta start with a great big man, cause he'll make the guards better....plus I taught him all he knows)
2. Maclin - have not seen
3. Drury - pg (by committee)
4. Arseneault - pg (by committee)
5. Walker - have not seen

Bench
McMullen
Hurley
Arseneault
Rogers (guess)
B. Johnson (when he's on he's tough to stop)

*my ten might be biased....I haven't seen most of these guys play.
