Arsenault first team?  That is ridiculous.

I think we all tend to overanalyze the all- conference teams.  I think the coaches drive it with the victors getting the spoils.  Based on numbers, Hurley should be second team ahead of the Lake Forest guys.  But guess what?.....Lake Forest got it done and in effect earned the spots.  Same thing goes for Grinnell which won the regular season title.  In the case of Beloit, I think Horton is the best, but my guess is the coach influenced the pick.

I have been guilty as well as calling Hinz the best player ever at Beloit......we should say in the last 20 years.  it is safe to say that better players were on the number 1 team in the country in the early 80's.   A few of those guys were all-american.  Also, the best player in the history of the school and conference is a guy named Ron Bontemps.....look it up, one of the best players in the country at any level.  One of the keys to the Olympic gold medal in 1952.  Played AAU ball after school earning as much as he could have in the NBA at the time.  Second best player might have been on the same team, Johnny Orr of Michigan and Iowa state coaching fame.  These two were part of the same undefeated state champion in high school.  This Beloit team beat DePaul on their court by something like 40 points.

A little history to augments Roop's lesson.

I look for Beloit to name a new coach in about 3 weeks, perhaps less if circumstances change.

One of the advantages that they should have in retaining Youngblood is that he can continue to maintain contact with the kids he has been talking to until such time as the new coach is named.

Roop, perhaps the new coach and Recruit X can get to know each other on Friday March 16.

To the Beloit backers, and especially Dolph:  I'm just glad you don't cheer for Knox.

Curious as to why?

DOLPH,

I hope you are not insinuating that Lance Randall meets recruit X in the WIAA finals on March 16 and then becomes Beloit's coach the next week. If so, then you lack inside information, because that isn't going to happen.

If it's another high school coach you speak of, then please indulge us ???.

The state finals are not on the 16th.

Any coach would be free to be walking around Madison on a Friday when the state tournament was in town and bump in to a recruit wouldn't they?

"The state finals are not on the 16th."    My mistake

"Any coach would be free to be walking around Madison on a Friday when the state tournament was in town and bump in to a recruit wouldn't they?"

Certianly, I was just trying to head off any "Lance Randall is Beloit's next coach" rumours at the pass  so we didnt have to read that speculation for the next few weeks.

I am also issuing a board ban on anyone speculating that any Bennett ever might be taking the job :)

I can assure you that there will be no speculation whatsoever on my part as to who the new Beloit coach will be.

I thought my explanation was fairly clear.  But in case you need to read more in-between the lines...  You seem to take Beloit's hardships, well...hard.  Had you rooted for the Purple Prairie as much as the Bucs, I'm afraid you'd be in a straight jacket by now.  That's all.

In other ramblings:

Scots Quatro - I think Terwelp's bout with the flu might have cost him a spot on the second team.

I'll bet two Roopacinos that the COY celebrated with spontaneous trip to Brooks Brothers.

Iowa loses at Penn State.  That's a shame....   ;D

Sounds like Dolph is in the know on this one and isn't sharing. That's cool, it's more fun that way. I had a name come to mind but don't see how meeting Recruit X on the 16th could be involved in any way.

Nut -

If the victors get the spoils, then how does a sophomore from IC (Gillingham) get on second team above McMullen from Ripon?  How does Monmouth get three all-conference selections?

Is it an overall agreement that Hinz was the best in the last 20 years?  Grant was a scary player to play against.  He could do it all.  Rememeber there is a thing called defense.  I have no problem with Josh, but this teams record is a glaring indication of his leadership ablilities.  It's not like Beloit had NO talent when he was playing.

LU_nut

Ripon red:  I did not see Grant, so I cannot comment.  I was really just making the point that there have been players better than Hinz going back a ways.  If Grant was the equal or better, I think you are reinforcing my point.

I will say that Gillingham has always had excellent games against LU.  Actually better than McMullen.  I really do not know enough to say who is better.  I think giving a team like IC only one slot is not contrary to my point.....same goes to Macklin and knox.  Ripon, who was third, got a first teamer in addition to McMullen.  Also, not sure McMullen had a better year.  Gillingham scored 16.4 per game on 45% shooting.  McMullen scored 11.3 on 43% shooting.  McMullen had more assists, 5.5 pg vs 2.9 for gillingham.  Their A/TO ratios are pretty close.  Not sure I see a big problem with the IC guy ahead of him.

I think the main point I am trying to make is that we overanalyze the all conference stuff.  I think there are a lot of things that go into it.

Not trying to deter attention away from Carroll's ongoing great season that continues tonight in our backyard, but what are some ideas on the rankings for next years conference?

Doesnt look like I am going to make the trip up to Augustana tonight. Weather looks like its going to be pretty wet and since the wipers on my car are schizophrenic I am not going to risk it. At least there is the webcast....Good luck Pioneers!

We're collecting previews for each team in the tourney on one of the multiregional boards. If I get them by friday I may even be able to stick them in one document for people to peruse. A fun little tourney resource of sorts. Could someone here do one for Carroll? Thanks!
