so....what was the word on the GC-Winona game? Anyone see it?
Threes are better than twos....

Yeah, Patrick Kenny is the FY pg.  I have also heard that Horton is out of awhile, but he also was last year and still played in almost every game.  Nate Tate is not playing this year.  This will take away from the team's athleticism along with FY Julian Ross.  Both had good seasons at WR during football and would definitely help on the team.

Roop,

I was at the scrimmage on Thursday and I found out that Horton has a stress fracture in his foot and will be out for another 3-4 weeks.  Horton would play right now but trainers are holding him back.  I did not hear anything about Nate Tate but I would assume he will not play this year...he is not on the roster as of right now.

As far as the scrimmage...Beloit played better than I expected for the team they have.  Benedictine was a pretty equal match for them but not what the Bucs will see throughout the season.  They will struggle against the MWC but I think Vraney will have them playing better D than they have in the past.  It also looks like Vraney wants to really push the ball up the floor but again with not much bench that would seem unlikely later in the season.  They have some guys that can shoot 3's but the big issues are their bigs and the overall lack of experience.    I also agree that their first year point guard will suprise some people.  He is very quick and can handle the ball as well as shoot 3's.  He reminded me a lot of Dowden his first year with Beloit but with more of a scoring mentality.  It will be interesting to see him face some conference guards.

However, their season really lies on the shoulders of Horton.  It will be a while before Horton is in any kind of game shape and may not be much of a factor right away once he comes back.  He will be their only consistency whatsoever.  Unfortunately, not having a 20 and 10 talent on the floor may mean a battle for the basement in the MWC. :-\

Can anyone tell me the name of "Beloit's "first year point guard"?
Could it possibly be Patrick Kenny?
Thanks

Yeah, Patrick Kenny is the FY pg.

I know Patrick and can offer some insight. I don't know the MWC enough to know how many games BU will win this year, but if there are any interested BU fans who consult this board, I can tell you that BU has a very capable court general in Patrick.

First of all, Patrick has been well schooled. He learned from one of my favorite high school coaches in the Chicago area, Al Biancalana at York HS in Elmhurst. Coach B has many years of experience including experience coaching in the college ranks at Bradley. He is a master technician and a great teacher of the game.

Patrick. partially as a result of Coach B's teaching, has a good "head for the game. "
He understands the team concept and knows not only his role/responsibility on plays, but also those of his teammates. He "sees the whole court." He knows how to take care of the ball, and is a very good passer. He makes good decisions. As a junior, he was down the list as far as a shooting option on his team, partially because of a couple of outside sharpshooters and a future D2 center. Last year, with the departure of the previous year's marksmen, he was asked to shoot more. While still not putting up what you could call a lot of shots, Patrick did post a very nice shooting percentage. So, he can keep his man honest, and unable to sluff off him to help on another shooter. Patrick's main "deficiency" is that at 5'8" he is somewhat vertically challenged.

In addition to his basketball skills, Patrick is a very nice guy.

Anybody out there know why Julian Ross has decided not to play basketball at Beloit?  I heard he was pretty good in high school.

Sounds like from the description that Winona state just put on a dunk fest against Grinnell, which isthe way to beat them.  Not a bad game for eother team to prepare them for the season.

Winona State 144 Grinnell 90
http://www.winona.edu/athletics/mbasketball/index.htm

One of the interesting numbers in the box score is the number of minutes played by the first year big men. Mahaffey, McDonald, Knisley all played 12-15 minutes. Not sure if that was to match up better with the Winona State team or to get them reps in "the system". Sometimes you simply need reps/minutes to trust your assignments. Team didn't shoot very well either.

Would have been interesting to see.

"Sometimes" shooting better does make a difference but would it have made a 54 point difference ?? I believe they played a "real" game with D1 Drake closer than this one. If this helps Grinnell that's fine, however when you lose by that much I'm not sure that it was ever a game.

Roop Vegas says lay the points and take UW-Green Bay -23. Bet the farm. Hey, it's just an exhibition so you won't really lose any money  ;)

Sorry, wasn't trying to imply that was 'the difference', just observing the poor shooting. Could have been any number of reasons for the numbers. Can't really tell from a box score.

Let's face it. Winona State is a great DII program (preseason #1 or #2 in the polls). They might be better than the Drake team that Grinnell played. I doubt you can draw any conclusions from the results. Winona probably got to see how they would do up-tempo, and Grinnell got to see how to attack a much taller team.

Just wondering what you guys think about st. norbert guard eric gruenewald, haven't seen him play in college yet, saw him many times in high school and just wondering how he is coming along in his college career?

He said that he didn't want to be overwhelmed with school and another sport.

Amos Lawrence

GB 87 LU 62 Final.  Lawrence held tough at 26-23 with 6 and half minutes to go in the first, but went scoreless the rest of the half. Never got closer than 16 in the second, but overall a lot of good things to take away as well as of course some bad things, too.

The Roop

As predicted UW-Green Bay covered.

I agree with that. A top D2 is way better than an above average D3.

Uh, duh.  Try the other way and you may have an argument.  A top D3 team is better than an above average D2 team.

Good job Roop on setting the spread and your prediction............when will we all learn that the Roopster should never be doubted?  Should have packed my bags for Vegas the minute you came out with the prediction.

Old School: who is replacing Krull in the middle for Point this year???  I liked their freshman last year(entire team for that matter) and would expect that you have a good year as a fan.   Will there be enough basketballs to go around?
