Greek Tragedy

I wouldn't go as far to say Knox beating Ripon is a huge upset.  Upset, yeah, but not HUGE.  Ripon isn't going to be very good this year with only one starter back and missing Bo, McMullen and Schmitting.  Knox was predicted 9th while Ripon was predicted 6th, I believe.  The gap is a lot closer between 4 and 10 than it is between, say, Grinnell, Lawrence and Carroll.

Roop, I really feel for you and respect you for being a loyal fan of Beloit.    They are bad bad bad I am afraid.

If they were getting torched for 90 points a game I would agree, but they're not. A few minutes of sloppiness after it was out of hand allowed IC to get to 71, otherwise they would have been held under 60. So you should win games like that but not when you only average 41 a game.

The guys were smart enough to get into Beloit now they just need to translate that into good decision making on the court. I don't think they are a great shooting team but they are creating their own misses right now.

I picked Beloit in the survivor pool, to be the last team to win a game... ;D

Well they were picked to finish last in the conference so you are probably wise to do so. That being said, how many games should they have won by now ?? They weren't going to beat Platteville or Edgewood as both are contenders in their respective conferences. I'm a little disappointed to see them lose at home by 20 to MSOE but they are an improved team this year and did win a Pool B regional last year. IC, well, it was a winnable game but it was on the road after all so there are no guarantees.

The fact that they are 0-4 doesn't bother me as much as how they got there. 24.5% from the floor and 10% from 3 point range last night. You're simply not taking good shots when you have a percentage that low. If they finish 3-20 because they have 3-20 talent that's fine but I think they are better than that even without Horton.

They're smart enough to play well on defense so why aren't they playing smart on offense ?? I don't know if a foot to the behind or a 2x4 to the head would fix this but something has to and soon.

FYI Beloit College. I know the stats came from IC last night but you might want to proof read them before you post them on your website. For example: Who is this new player Cory Busted and whatever happened to Cody Bysted..................

Carroll escaped Monmouth with the win. Monmouth led the whole first half and then it was back and forth in the second half. Monmouth shot horrendous from the field the whole game. Hats off the Carroll for their free throw shooting down the stretch to seal the game. This is definitely a game that Monmouth would love to have back.

What?  Cody got busted??  Will it affect his eligibility? ;D

Greek Tragedy

From today's Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel:

Wes Ladwig scored 22 points as the Pioneers knocked the kilts off the Fighting Scots...

The Vikings used a 14-0 run early in the second half to break open a close game as they chopped down the Foresters...

The Pioneers got 31 points from John Grotberg as they out jousted the Green Knights...

Jacob Tucker scored 18 points as the Blueboys shipped the Buccaneers back to Beloit...

Honestly.  This isn't the high school newsletter.

GC 106, CC 93

Tight game the 1st half. CC as usual fast, physical, and very good at meeting GC on its turf. I was particularly impressed with #3 - the kid can move the ball. #21 was strong as well.

GC opened it up in the second half, with everyone getting to play. Good action from all 3 squads. Particularly enjoyed what I saw from the freshmen, who are getting more quickly integrated into the system than any crop since 1999. Gotta admire the CC squad fighting back a 20 pt lead in Q3. But overall GC seemed to rattle CC just as they managed to regain momentum.

Officiating was bad, but equally to both sides. I mean, when *I* see the fouls, you know it's bad!

Well, to partially answer my own question - LU over MC 90-75 (according to MC's website).  Nice to get through this road trip with 2 wins.  Next Saturday's game at UW-SP will be a good measure of how good LU can be this year.

Lake Forest 66 Beloit 50

BIG SHOCKER!!!

Knox 62 SNC 56

Knox is 2-0....wow

IC 89  Ripon 76

Wow...two big scores I didn't think I'd see.

I'm pretty damn shocked to see Knox and IC both 2-0 with LU and GC

crazy..

Attended the LU-Lake Forest game this weekend, really not a well played game from either side in the first half---second half Lake Forest continued to struggle, and LU hit their stride (and a ton of 3-pointers) to pull away.  I think it was only around a 3 point game at halftime though, Lake Forest just fell apart in the 2nd half...

spent the first half on the Lake Forest side and the second half with the visitors so I was able to pick up a few juicy tidbits (and by that I mean things most people familar with either program probably already know, but I found interesting)
-Lake Forest McNamee and Hanley both out, no one knew why McNamee was, but he was in dress clothes on the bench
Hanley is out for the season with a knee (the person I spoke with said he thought ACL but wasnt sure) and this particular person thought it was a huge loss for the Foresters---calling him the offensive sparkplug or something like that---after looking up his stats he did seem to have some success last year---maybe explains the Foresters early struggles??

From the Lawrence side I actually heard a lot of praise for the new coach and his substitution patterns...but as you can never make anyone happy I also heard a few dissenters with this policy (Lawrence was seen to sub 5 in and 5 out at the same time)---my thoughts---maybe it contributed to LU outperforming and outlasting Lake Forest, more freshness and depth etc.
Also saw a bit of a yelling match between two of the LU players on the bench, that was shortlived and probably is being blown out of proportion by me just by posting it on here, but I know that even the slightest team continuity issue can throw a team outta kilter....

IC 89  Ripon 76

Didn't somebody say yesterday that IC had some good shooters ?? Oh that's right, it was me. Therefore it's no surprise that they beat Ripon, especially at home.

Horton did play for Beloit and was a man among boys but the boys still need to take care of the ball better. While I'm sure Andy is capable of putting up 50 in a game I don't think he should have to. 66 points is a good effort once again on the defensive side but where is the scoring going to come from.

Kevin,

I saw LFC play two or three times last year...Hanley was a glue guy, captain on the court type. Did all the little things and tended to pick them up with whatever they needed that day, whether it was defense, scoring, or rebounding.
His absence will hurt them.

watched both bc games this weekend on mwctv as well as switching over to some of the other games as well.

the 2 stats that really stand out to me in the LF game is to's and rebounding. BC actually shot better then LF but were crushed on the boards. Horton did play very well but they have no other insode presence.

Wimmer at 6'8" is a big disapointment.  with his size he should be domintating the boards, but rebounding is about desire as much as anything else and watching him play a few times this year he just cowers away from anykind of contact. he had zero boards in the LF game, that cant happen. when your leading rebounder for the 2 games this weekend is the smallest guy on your team thats saying alot of where the problem for BC is. Bysted is the lone senior and has to step up and play like one. his 2 conf. games have been horrible. only 2 pnts and 6 to's in the LF game and only 3 pnts in the IC game. he should eb scoring in dble digits everygame this year. BC does have a good point grd in the 1st yr Kenny.

Ripon also has a really really good one in the Coaches son. man is he fun to watch. watched from the end of regualtion in the dbl ot game vs knox...he will be something very special before his college time is over.

speaking of Knox...man was i off the mark with these guys. time will tell if this weekend was afluck but i cant remember ever seeing them play this hard before.....quite surprised with them.

GC is gonna be tough to beat...LU might be the one to take em. man when Grotberg gets it going he is very good. he was so cold in the 1st half of the SN but in the middle of the 2nd he hit 3 strt 3's to take the heart right out of SN.

well sure love having the MWCTV...get see em all now..:D

I witnessed Wimmer's play in HS....and he wasn't overly aggressive there either.  He had great size, but as you say...not much desire.  Horton and Wimmer could make for a nice duo...and really help a struggling team.  Also too bad that Dowden transferred.  Couldn't find a kid w/ a bigger heart for the game...he would've brought so much stability to the team this year.  Hopefully somebody will find a way to motivate Wimmer.....the season's still young ;D
