However, too many turnovers and bad rebounding at times, as usual, kill the Bucs.

That would explain Carrolls 10-0 run in a 2 minute stretch. That's hard for even Grinnell to pull off.

It's a recurring theme in the game storys on the website too. Bucs pulled within whatever then <insert team here> went on a however many point run. They play pretty well for 35 minutes (Platteville game excepted) but then those lapses get mixed in and it kills them.

Congrats to the Lady Bucs for pulling the 78-72 upset over #19 Carroll.

Just checked the link on the RC-StN game...

Sorry, but as a Grinnell fan, I had to snicker when the headline of the article reads "Red Hawks Lose Barn-Burner Against St. Norbert" and then I read that it was a 61-59 game.

That's a barn burner half, not a barn burner game...

:D ;)

I thought that same thing system.  Not sure what they were thinking there.

Well it's hard for GC to do that cause they give up the layup to run down and shoot a three.

Not sure if that's true about this years "System". It sounds to me like they are looking for sure  ways of making a 2 when needed and coming up with actual stops on the defensive end. Not the 2 for 3 trade that the "old system" was.

Roop, as usual, the System is getting tweaked based on the players and what works. The old 2 for 3 trade is still in place at times, but with the addition of some tall guys and a few other things you'll notice as the season goes on, there's more action under the basket. Nonetheless, for us true-blue system fans, I think it'll be a rare game this season that we don't see over 100.

Best of luck to the GC squad today! We're looking forward to it!

From the GC website:
"David Arseneault '09 broke the NCAA record for single-game assists regardless of division Saturday afternoon in Grinnell College's 151-112 men's basketball win over North Central University of Minnesota at Darby Gymnasium. Arseneault dished out 34 assists, breaking the previous mark of 26 established in 1989."

For the first 10 minutes, NCU looked like they had a game plan to whip GC. In fact, GC did not lead until late in the 1st half. But then NCU (with a small bench) wore down and GC took over. At one point Coach A had a 100% freshman squad out - interesting. Chamberlain woke up after a slow beginning to enjoy a fabulous game - at times it felt a bit like the NBA with his rim-popping dunks. Grotberg started with cold shooting but by the 2nd half was on his game. NCU had some really nice ball handling/passing. An enjoyable game and a good way to end up 07.

Chamberlain's dunk against Monmouth on Wednesday night was anything but "rim-popping."  ;)  It didn't affect the outcome in the slightest, as the Pioneers won easily, but it was still a humorous play.

Jeff,

Box the Grinnell website says Arseneault played 38 minutes, but averages 21. Do you get the feeling this was something they were after going into the game or did he have a bunch of assists early and they decided to go after it?

If its the first case, I think it taints it a little in my opinion.

From the box score, he had 14 assists in the first half, and GC had a 25 point lead. He broke the record with 7.5 minutes left in the game and a 37 point lead. When he had 14 in the half, they probably made a decision to go after the record - they were more than half way there. Necessary to win? No. But I'm guessing that GC wasn't playing the same running scheme; I can't imagine anyone playing 38 minutes full out.

The team had 26 steals in the game.

This is something that has been in the works since last season <VERIFIED> it just needed the right opponent for it to be pulled off. It was attempted a time or two but didn't get done last year so I'm glad that GC finally found the right victim. Nothing says class like stacking the deck to break a record. I hope it lasts a week.

Why not host a tournament next year with Rockford, Robert Morris-Springfield and Judson so that he may break his own record ?? 34 assists are not impressive when they are manufactured. He needs 50 or 60 in a game I think.

To: Jeffp and mere mortals

Go Grinnell Cagers! Young David Jr. has made us all proud with his 34 assists. I'll let jeffp comment on that further, but I just wanted to give a congratulations to the young man. David Jr. = BEAST!
On a related note, Edith and I are back together and I'm getting it on the regular again. Blue pills, people. Blue pills.
David Jr. = BEAST.
And as for young John Grotberg and young Keith Chamberlian...BRAVO! You two are simply splendid. My wife saw pictures of you in the website and said that back in her day she would have been on you two like soy sauce on rice.
Also, I know this is not supposed to be a political forum, but vote Huckabee. We need a president who knows who his maker is. From this day forth, I pray to Mike Huckabee. God bless you, Mike.
One more plea to jeffp...I miss your scent, your masculine aroma...systemfan86 adds a nice feminine touch to the board, but I need a man's perspective.

Don't start with the JeffP-Roop08 stuff again because YOU are the main reason why JeffP is no longer posting. Funny is funny to a point but you have gone beyond that point many times.

I'm happy that you and Edith are together again. Hopefully she doesn't talk in her sleep anymore.

Let's put it this way - watching the game, I felt the teams were reasonably well matched. NCU's problem was a shallow bench. They were really causing problems for GC well into the 1st half. Yes, GC's game plan was to break the record if they could. As Roop said, they tried it last year. They may well try it against later this year against another opponent. But the basic system game plan looked pretty much the same as usual, except that this year GC is benefiting from the most big men they've ever had, lots of shooting talent, plus Long-Schmidt-Grotberg-Arsenault-Chamberlain. I mean, seriously - this is probably the best balanced team, skill-wise, I've seen in 10 years. Whether that means that they'll have a great season, who knows? After all, this is GC.  Maybe we'll see the same lopsided score when they play LU. Maybe not. this week was Davey Jrs. week. Maybe next week it'll be Chamberlain or Grotberg. What a problem to have...

Does this have any similarity to the Lincoln v. OSU-Marion game from last year when a three-point record was broken?
