The Roop

He was supposed to resume practice on Tuesday I believe. No idea how long it will take him to get up to speed again.

Man, it's humbling when The Roop knows more about what's happening with Chamberlain than I do! :-)

But since he hath spake it, I'll take it.

Basically, any SNC player could put their head down, barrel into the lane, throw up a terrible shot....and then count on getting bailed out by the refs.  Credit to SNC for taking advantage of it, but Lawrence did get flustered and started making turnovers and taking bad shots.

Looking at the boxscore, SNC only went to the line 11 times.

OK, you're right.  SNC could have taken more advantage of the horrendous officiating.

Well I'm an "overhead crane artist" by trade yet journalist at heart so I can't reveal my sources.

Go back several pages and you may find the answer. Or I could just be making it up. Who knows.

Sounds like LU had better guard Ladwig on Saturday.

wc2viking:  I have a hard time sharing your view on the officiating.  They just tended not to call a lot of fouls and let the guys play underneath.  I tend to prefer that type of basketball.    The total fouls were even and LU shot almost twice as many foul shots as St. Norbs.   I am sure there were some bad calls like there are at all games, but the officiating to me did not seem one-sided.  They just seemed to let them play.

We'll assume the newspaper knows. Even if it isn't an Iowa paper. It'd be nice to see him on court again before his senior season winds down. He's really grown as a player.

Nice guy, too.

The boxscore tells me two things.

1.)  LU took EIGHT free throws in the last minute, presumably SNC fouling to stop the clock and get that 3 pts for 2 pts.

2.)  It may also tell me that all the fouls that SNC committed, prior to that, were shooting fouls thus "twice" as many free throws, as opposed to LU fouling on non-shooting situations.

Just my thoughts.

Vraney has young players playing because they are the best players on the team.  Aside from Horton, the Bucs don't have much of threat at any level, let alone experience.  If Vraney can get an above average recruiting class this year or next, I believe that beloit will have a chance for a run in two years when some of the main players (kenny, Lovgren, Wimmer) have some time to get a little better and ready to play at this level.

Re:  Poll

My vote went to Lawrence being undefeated.  The fact that they have swept Grinnell, beaten rival Ripon (still need to go there) and topped a tough SNC team on the road is my reasoning.

Carroll was a close 2nd (maybe for the wrong reason though), but they have 3 losses.  They have yet to play Lawrence, and need to play Grinnell again.  I'm still trying to figure out how they lost those two games over the weekend.  That really hurt.

Ripon doesn't surprise me.  I mentioned this previously, but they lost a lot of fire power...McMullen, Bo Johnson and Schmitting.

That's a bit harsh but not inaccurate. On the plus side Vraney can sell playing time to recruits and actually mean it. However you define a quick turn around Beloit is about to make one.

Grinnell has had the injuries, so they can't be too much of a disappointment.  However, Lawrence is playing better than anyone thought outside of Appleton.  I know, some people picked them to do well, but you can't tell me you thought they'd be playing as well as they are with a new coach and lots of questions about the bench.  Impressive.

After seeing Lawrence last year, their success this year is no surprise.  The bigger one was why they were unsuccessful in '06-'07.

The Roop

I think you can be considered successful without making the conference tournament. LU certainly had a nice team last year but they didn't win the close ones, sans Bopper, like they did in 05-06. With a different planetary alignment that undefeated team probably loses at least three. @Ripon, @Carroll, @Beloit were improbable come back wins. When you look at it in that context last years "fall off" really isn't that big of deal.

LU is obviously back, enjoy it.

I agree.  A similar situation happened with the football team this year.  A great freshman class came in and a handful of them got the PT they were promised.  While it may be hard to see, Beloit teams are headed down the right path.  It may take a while, but I think they'll get back into a position to conted in the MWC.
