i disagree on scheduling, though - au will have a very good measuring stick for where they are and where they need to go to be competitive on a national level after week 1 - the coaching staff will also be able to say "these guys are pretty good, but they're no mount union, so i think we can play with them" about EVERY other opponent on their schedule

I completely agree with you here. It's no doubt a ballsy move, but as long as Averett comes out of the game injury-free, the team will be all that much better off and better prepared when it faces the tough games in conference. Mount's defense won't be quite as dominant as last year, and with Averett getting three very important skill players back on offense, I think this has the makings of a fairly high-scoring game. I'm certain Mount will win, but Averett won't go down without a fight.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

the monarchs did not look particularly good on either side of the ball against shaw today, but i will say this - shaw is good...better than any team the monarchs will play this season - they have a qb who is legit, one of the best in the ciaa, the lines were HUGE...bigger than any i've seen in d3 - this is a team that won the ciaa 2 years ago and was 4-2 in that conference last year - they've also been practicing since august 4, and looked like a team that had a lot of camp under their belt as opposed to the monarchs who have only had a handful of live practices...no excuses, though...there's a long way to go, and i'm glad the quackers are still a few weeks away

i could be wrong on this, but I kinda remember something about the NCAA was not too keen on pick-em's for the D3 and Pat was worried it might be a problem if spreads were used. KIDS contest has no spreads and i think thats the reason no one has had no real issues. Before you do anything setting it up you should check with Pat and see what he would allow on D3football.com

Speaking of my pick 'em ... when you are getting in?! :)

FYI, I'll be at the game August 31.  Getting there around 6:30.

I like the way the d3 staff is thinking ... whether they hold true or not, I'm glad the Cougars are getting some preseason press. But you sure don't win rings in media publications.
To all newbies - don't run your mouth until the team you're pulling for wins the big game. (please refer to Eh-You's karma for more details)

Nice article on Huntingdon football with a reference to USA South member Maryville.

I just review the US News and World Report ranking of colleges. Greensboro and CNU are mentioned in the rankings but no other USA South schools.

I was surprised at some of the schools listed instead USAS ones. Anyone know what's up here? Where's Shenandoah, Averett, Methodist, etc.

Hey guys its me again this year. I was at the kickoff lunchon that we had in Greensboro and I tell you Coach Mitchell is really happy about his pre season things. I think that the pride are going to turn alot of heads this year on the field and prove the USA South conference poll wrong. We start our play on Sat. with our first ever D2 team and we have the advantage of playing it at home. I will be seeing alot of the games this year and I am really looking foward to the Pride turning some heads this season.

I haven't really scoured the rankings, except to get an idea of how many Va. schools made the list, but I did see that another USAC school, Ferrum, got mentioned. It was among the top 50 of southern comprehensive colleges.

Hey, Gullett!

Any chance of getting more detail on what Coach Mitchell said at the luncheon for those of us that could not attend?  I didn't see anything about it in the News-Record online.

Any info helps me survive until Sept. 2  .  .  .  .  .

And I just did a double-take of the rankings and also saw that Maryville got really good mention, ranking third on the southern comprehensive list. I was impressed.

GCG, I agree with you, though, about something you said earlier. I was surprised at some of the schools that did make the list instead of the USA South ones. OK, retention rate and alumni giving and such aren't even remotely the end-all of the college experience, but some of the schools that made the rankings just don't seem to fit.

Hey narch,

I have a question to ask you.

section13raiderfan

Hi guys. As my name implies im a Mount Union fan and I was wondering if the Averett/Mount Union game will be televised locally in your area? The Raiders are tape delayed locally a couple of games a year. Would anyone be willing to tape the game for me? Also someone remarked that Mount Unions defense is not expected to be as dominant as last years.  I thought so too....until this last full contact scrimmage on Saturday.  Look for a quick and hungry bunch of defenders. I hope you guys enjoy the game...I wish i was gonna be there!
