Mosh -

Saw in your bio that you were a coach at Northern Nash HS before your move to Guilford.

Bridgewater recruited Brad Jones, a running back, from there.  He looks pretty good ... in the next couple years, he could follow in the steps of Davon Cruz, Marcus Washington and Winston Young.

Your thoughts on him?

i played against eric swann (ariz cardinals) in one game in hs...he played a few games on jv as a frosh...i played a tackle position as a 160 lb'er (couldn't run, catch or throw...so i became on ol) - not only was he about 60 lb's heavier, he was about 10 steps quicker - needless to say, his performance on the jv squad against me was clearly one of the stepping stones to his varsity and eventually professional career

For what it's worth,
We were supposed to do the CUA-Shenandoah game live, but couldn't. I went anyway, and I'm blogging live from Winchester on The Daily Dose.

I played against Willie Parker (steelers) ... I don't even think he was their starting tailback (his sr year) because of Derek Fisher (who went to ECU and at one time led the nation in rushing)...or maybe Fisher was the FB and Parker was the TB...either way that backfield was way more than we could handle.

Just got back from the SU-CUA game.  Only good thing I can say about the game is that Shenandoah's hospitality was once again top notch.  Excellent new additions to the stadium as well (locker rooms, restrooms, etc.).

How could I forget Clay Jordon unleasing him. It was like a wind of doom.  :-\

The Cocks staff were a bunch of guys I knew when I saw them but I cannot for the hell of me remember one name. 2-3 of them ended up with the lunatic at LSU. 100k minimum for an assistant down there. Coach Scott? Can't remember.

anyway I think West Craven has put more than a couple out there in the NFL. Jordan who I do not like for various unmentioned reasons really makes the attempt to take care of his boys. I' ll give him that. They love him down there. Hell he got Guy Whimper (Giants) and Chris Moore (Saints) into ECU and THEY PLAYED FOR HAVELOCK!!

Anthony Wright was already at S. Carolina when I moved to New Bern, so I never saw him play in HS.  You're   right, though, W. Craven has had some good players.  In fact, all three Craven County schools have had their share.  Havelock and New Bern HS are good too.  I hope Anthony stays healthy and has a good season behind Palmer.

Uncle Jessie

Well, I hate to say it but if last nights game has any indication on how the season is going to go for the Hornets I would be surprised if they win 1 game.

I was at the game last night and the offense just plain stunked up the house last night. The Hornets had ONLY 84 yards for the entire game! AWFUL! 1.8 avg. yards an attempt. This is one of the problems I have with the love that Barnes has with the Ace-Wing. Everyone knows the Hornets are going to run then run, then run, then run again and then maybe just maybe he will pass the ball. But the pass is a long shot because he will most likely run again. I just wish they would mix it up some to get the opponents defense off the line some. Everyone just clogs up the middle and the Hornets running backs have no chance.

I have to give a hand to the D-team. They played with heart and with being on the field for over 35 min's Im sure they were exhausted. I have to tip my hat to the CUA players however. They played a great game.

Man I hope what I saw last night was not the norm for this 2006 team for if it was its going to be a looooooong season. :-[   Iam not looking forward to next week against Bridgewater. Im almost afraid to see what the final score will be on that one.

Here is the box score if anyone would like to see it. http://www.su.edu/athletics/fb/2006/083106.htm

Here is the Winchester Star newspaper's article about the game as well. Pretty interesting. Also a quote from it. "I think that (pass) caught them off guard," Sabrick said. "You've got to have a balanced game to win.  This is a CUA players quote. Something Barnes should learn.

Uncle Jessie -

A couple thoughts on the game...

-Both teams were very small - at all positions.  I know that doesn't really matter in some cases (positions), but I felt like they were small muscle wise too.  Catholic's Nick Olivero was the most impressive to me, and he was only 5-8, 185ish.

-That was a quick game (time wise - first half lasted only 49 minutes) ... but slow as far as the play on the field.  No one really had blazing speed.  The weather conditions were perfect too, so that can't be the excuse.

-On both team's depth charts, I noticed about 80% of the second-string were freshmen ... not good for this season.

-Four of Catholic's five starting OLs are sophomores ... the lone senior was only 5-11, 220 lbs ... yikes.  Shenandoah's defensive line were the biggest players on the field, yet still couldn't get a lot of pressue on Ricca and Jacobs.

-Where was the emotion for either team??  Until Catholic got a 10-0 lead, neither team was being vocal.  Even the fans were quiet.

-I arrived about an hour before the game ... and I saw only one group tailgating.  On a beautiful Thursday evening (home opener!), only one?!

-I liked the freshman QB more than the senior one that started.  I liked the couple throws he made, put it out there where the receiver could have gotten it.  It will interesting to see how long Barnes sticks with Blake over Glick.  I'd say give Glick the start against Bridgewater.

I agree with you ... not sure who else on Shenandoah's schedule they can beat.  Greensboro maybe?

One would think SU would beat GC. but even in the Hornets 2 conference champion teams they have come up short against the Pride. They just seem to have the Hornets number each year for some reason. I agree with you on the QB thing. Im sure Barnes will start the Sr. next week. But if things are not going well he is going to have to pull him. Who knows, maybe they will have a platoon style at QB next week. I dont like that but the Hornets did that in 2000 and starting in 2001.For the fans not making much noise its hard for the crowd to cheer for anything when its run after run after run and your only getting over a yard a carry.

Oh, I know.  Trust me, when Bridgewater got shalacked by Mount Union in 2003, I didn't (couldn't) say a word.  So I understand.

As far as SU's running ... at first I was questioning why you all would run up the middle on two 3rd-and-longs ... but then I saw the starting QB throw.  Then I got it.  Pick your poison.  If Diggs and Lacey had better blocking (or a passing game that would lessen the players in the box), then your running game would be pretty good.  I like those two kids ... it's ashame they don't have any time or holes to work with.
