Abngr,
This is the first time I could get to a computer to comment on the real GC's game.  It was horrible being in the stands and not the sideline for the game.

What I saw was a team that had talent that didnt produce.
Offensively Davidsons front four (who i thought were pretty talented, up front anyway) shut down the running game.  Once that was gone, the passing game never clicked.  The defensive backfield for davidson really wasnt that good.  To many mistakes led to a butt whooping that shouldnt have happened.

Defensively Greensboro is Young exp wise.  Give the kids a few weeks and they will be fine.  The team needs to play with alot more excitement, they need players to make plays to get excited about, and they have to play with alot more attitude if they are going to win this year.

i asked a somewhat rhetorical question earlier in reference to cnu's dominance, but that was before i got a look at the box score....now i'm serious...how dominant was cnu??? it certainly doesn't look like they were as dominant as the score would indicate, at least offensively - the defense was obviously dominant, but the offense put up just 271 total yards and averaged just 2.2 yards per carry on the ground (what's going on with hilliard...just 17 yards on 9 carries this week...i thought he looked like a STUD last year) and had only 2 drives that went more than 50 yards - on special teams cnu missed FOUR extra points

in 2 games, cnu has had 2 of the most perplexing box-scores i've seen in a long time - in week one they give up 600+ yards and only 21 points, and in week 2 they score 53 points, but only gain 271 yards...very odd

BC does have alot of weapons.  The thing that may hurt BC down the road could be the D-line. SU was able to get some big plays in the first half. Playing against a more powerful offense then SU and BC could get smoked.

I agree that BC's defense still has some growing to do. I noted that they reminded me of BC's 2001 team who went to the Stagg Bowl. We gave up like 30pts/game but scored like 45 a game on offense. I just don't think any team we play in the regular season this year will keep us below 30 pts. I still think SU will be right there with Ferrum & CNU for the conference title. Good luck against RMC.

CNU Fan

Narch,
I was at the CNU Maryville game.  Most of the starters played very little.  For example, the leading receiver for CNU - Nathan Davis only played maybe 10 to 15 plays during the game.  That was also true of George Jones and Rolland Hillard.  The only starters that went for the entire first half was the O line and the defense.  Hopefully, this will clear up why the offense had so little yards.  If the entire O had played the first half it might have been 63 or 70 to 0 at half.  But, the coach wanted to get everyone on the team a chance to play.

narch

cnu fan - thanks - it looks as though the cnu starters played all but one series of the first half - i've compiled these stats from those plays involving starters:

34 plays/89 yards (2.62 yards/play)
2 fg
3 td's
1 punt
1 safety against

the only area of dominance was on the scoreboard (and truthfully, that's all that matters) - i think cnu's offense has the defense to thank for making them look good, because they had a short field with which to work the entire game - i'm not trying to be a cnu hater...just pointing out the oddity of the score/box-score - i will say this, though - i think cnu is getting ready to face a VERY dangerous offensive team in ssu - the defense can't give up 600+ yards and expect just 21 points and the offense can't expect to put up 53 points if they don't produce better than they did vs. m'ville - since the monarchs don't play this week (i hate off weeks so early in the season), i'm going to be a capt. fan for a week and root for the fellow conference school, but i'm realistic...ssu is good and cnu can't afford to play the way they have the last 2 weeks and expect to win

Mosh
So how do you think GC will match up with GC-Q "dreaded passing attack"
when they play. The kid from ECU sounds like he can go if he has a weapon or 2. Sounds like the Panthers might be good this year and Narch said if he was still playing the Monarchs would have scored 100. That Narch he cracks me up.  ;D

narch-
You also have to look at the Captains O-line vs. last year's o-line. Only one starter returns, and thats Brian Arroyo and he was hurt during the first quarter and didnt play but so much the rest of the way. This o-line needs to gel and gel ASAP. It will definitely take a few games for them to come together and be able to create those creases for Hilliard and company to get thru. He was running thru a line last year that had pretty much played together for parts or most of 4 seasons. This year however, its a new chapter.

Abngr,
Greensboro vs Guilford matchup...I like Greensboro's dbacks.  They follow the lead of J. Matt #15.  I played one season with him before he got sent to Iraq.  If greensboro has one strength on defense it is in the defensive backfield.  So I like our chances vs the Quakers...Cant look to far ahead though, we play Maryville this week..

Anyways, Ive learned to try to stay on the goodside of Narch...Narch I heard that cumberland county schools are out tommorow because of the slouthful hurricane.  Maybe its a good week to have a bye.  Also I think CNU will lose this week vs Salisbury...But I think Salisbury will go far in the playoffs.

narch,

I think you can contribute a lot of the yards Rowan accumulated to the defensive game plan.  We were taking away the deep stuff, so they were content to go underneath, which led to chunk after chunk.  As a result of this tactic, we were able to stay in the game, and, believe it or not, CNU had some chances.  The bottom line is, Rowan is very good.  Their receivers are absolutely frightening, and they really began to overwhelm our defensive line as the game wore on.  I can honestly see the Profs being a dominant force this year.  Both of CNU's lines are young and inexperienced, for the most part, which leads me to our running game.  Against Rowan, it was nonexistent.  Of course, it didn't help that RU had some big, fast athletes to go up against.  It will take time for them to gel and come around....hopefully sooner than later.  Can you tell I was impressed with Rowan?

The game against Maryville was a good way to rebound and rest the starters.  They were an inferior opponent, and I truly felt bad for them.  We got up on them quick and didn't look back.  Their offense was pathetic, as they gained a mere 70 yards or so, with 50 of those coming in the fourth quarter against our 43rd string.  We only gained 270 yards of total offense due to various reasons.  We were able to capitalize on short fields throughout most of the game, due to turnovers and good return yardage.  The defense also scored a couple of touchdowns in the first quarter.  The reserves began playing early in the second quarter, so as you can imagine, the productivity dropped off as the game wore on.

Overall, the jury's still out, but this Saturday will tell me more.

CNU Fan

Narch,

I am not one of the guys that usually post about CNU.  I do not like to get in a CNU is better than everyone else battle.  I cheer for CNU because my nephew starts for their team.  I mainly only try to post when I personally see the game.  I live in the deep south and only get to see two CNU games a year.  I looked at the box score and some things that may not stand out to the average person on this board.  For example, the back up QB (K. Morgan) came into the game at 6:36 left in the 2nd quarter. M. Thomas, the backup RB came into thegame around 3:34 left in the 1st Qtr.  M. Hightower, a backup WR, was in the game at 1:50 left in the half.  Of course some of these players were actually in earlier in the game, but did not show up in the box score until the times noted.  I did look at the box score and did see that R. Hillard and G. Jones played later into the half.  I was wrong about that in my initial post.  But, there was a lot of subsitution going on during the game that does not show up in the box score.  Last year, Geroge Jones was at WR, Nathan Davis at the other WR, Rolland Hillard was the RB, Hudson Bryant the QB (after P. Jones went down) and the O-Line was always the same.

During the game, I would have to agree with Goose_13.  The O-line needs to gel and it better happen this week.  The Rowan D-line was swarming around the CNU QBs all day.  In the Rowan game, the D was missing 2 very important people, LB Gary Freeman (Activated to go to help in Katrina relief) and S Greg Bolton (Suspended for violation of team rules).  The O was also missing two important people, TE Justin Greenleaf (Team violations) and OL Bryan Arroyo (team violations).  I am not saying that this is why CNU lost.  They got beat by the better team that day.  End of Story.  I do not see the D giving up 600+ yards against Salisbury with the addition of those two players.  Rowan is mainly a passing team and had over 400+ yards passing.  Salisbury on the other hand is a run oriented offense.   I think CNU D's strength is their LB (Wood, Freeman and Kareem).  Their weakness is getting pressure on the QB.  They miss Ian Vincent something bad.

cnufan13

Bolton wasnt suspended for the Rowan game, or either game for that matter. It was Greenleaf, Arroyo, and Long.

cnu85

Coach K seemed to be in a difficult position. The score was getting out of hand, his starters (esp on D) had taken a beating the week before, and yet the D-Line and O-line really need to put in complete games to try to get their act together. Salisbury will be a test to see how the rest of the season will progress. Shenandoah is always a test for the conference, and it seems like Ferrum has serious potential this year.

I think the jury is still out. Maryville was more of a week off for the starters rather than a test. The next 2 games have me worried. It's exam time already!!

It will all be alright 85! CNU can hit the Vivarin,(* or is it RedBull now?), and cram all Friday night for the big test Saturday. :D

Sorry we shook the Hornet's nest alittle prior to you guys getting them. After our second half performance against MickyD the boys had to make ammends, "at all cost!" ;)

Guys, I've seen the Panthers this year, and yes they have seemed impressive.  They look like they always have, but to date I don't think that opponents like GC and E&H match up to the likes of SU and CNU.  They have to remain healthy, because they would have won all of their games last year if Pitts had not gotten hurt.  They were a different club with him at QB.  I think that it will be a fun season, and I trust that we will bring our best against your best.
