Interesting story about 59 year old guy playing D3 football.

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=ap-59-year-oldlinebacker&prov=ap&type=lgns

that's a great story, and inspirational and all that...but part of me thinks it gives people the idea that the competition isn't strong in d3 - some will certainly say "if a 59 year old dude can make a d3 team, d3 must not be that good..." - it's an incorrect assumption, but no doubt many who aren't in the know will make that assumption

i don't think i'd want to challenge that guy in any type of physical activity, though, and i'm sure there are 20 year old d3 players that can't hang with him...he runs a 5.0 flat at 59!...that's twice as fast as papi, and four times as fast as me :)

AdmiralPapi

Narch, it's hard to run fast and not spill my beer  ;D

Mosh, I actually think my favorite place to play other than at home was Greensboro.  Heck, I remember one year you guys even had a fireworks show to celebrate our victory.  We actually played a night game, I think it was GC's homecoming.  My girlfriend at the time actually sat on the GC side with a Methodist shirt and not one person said anything to her.

He will probably soon find out about the caliber of D3  but did you see the guns on that dude?!?! He's built like a BSH!!  :o I'm sure the reality of being 59 will soon set in. I am 44 and in pretty good shape. I can't even imagine trying something like that....even at my youthful age.  :D I can still mash a softball pretty well though.  ;D

Mosh,

In three years nobody from Greensboro has ever purchased Kickoff. (Or at least, nobody has ever selected Greensboro as their favorite team when purchasing.)

Where's the love, man? Did we do something to Greensboro? :)

admiral papi,

you were the slow qb right?  (rcknetti being the slickster)...I remember playing you my freshman year (2000).  You were a very good decision maker from what I remember.  I also remember getting layed out on punt coverage.  So maybe I saw fireworks myself.

Pat,

No hard feelings, I just have never purchased one.  In the past I have just looked at teams websites and made my own conclusions.  Maybe I should make the purchase this year to support the forum.

i love it :)

was it mcol51 that got the whole papi=slow thing going, or was that me?

by the way, if the comparison is to roncketti, there aren't a lot of qb's in the country, let alone the usasac, who are going to compare favorably...the rocket could run

With the season right around the corner I would like everyone's opinion on who has the best home field advantage or best atmosphere in the conf. Also, do you believe that there are any real home field advantages in the conf. I have not had the opportunity to see everyone's playing fields, yet the one's I have had the opportunity to see they all seem to have nice facilties.

I will break this down a couple of ways

Best Home Team Advantage Sites

1. CNU
2. Maryville
3. Ferrum
4. Methodist (visitors have to sit on home side and visiting team is on the other side listening to the crickets) Visiting fans get drowned out
5. Shenandoah (if that stadium is full, the noise level would be deafing)
6. Greensboro (only because of the potential size, only time I have been there there was less than 300 in the home stands and it was their homecoming)
7. NCWC (city owed stadium and if the visitors are good and bring a crowd they can offset the home crowd)
8. Averett (my team, but very little support)

Outstanding Facilities

1. CNU
2. Maryville (no bathroom or porta johns on visitor side but still a very nice facility and great field).
3. NCWC (bathrooms on both sides as well as food)
4. Ferrum (only thing I disliked about Ferrum is you have to drive to the end of the world and then you have to take a left. Their field wasn't that great between the 20 and goal line and you had to walk a ways to go to the bathrooms)
5. Methodist (really only complaint here is there are no visitor seats. Nice field, concessions could be more and porta johns are a hike but still a nice place.
6. Greensboro (sorry it was too cold to go looking for concessions, kickers haven't got any room on side line to practice and field appeared to be in bad shape to be a city owned/supported site. Bathrooms too small.
7. Shenandoah  (nice stadium, just needs concessions on visitor side. If you want to tailgate you have to set up in the hay field. The open end of the stadium next to the interstate is a distraction)
8. Averett (my team.........field is in terrible shape, heard through the grapevine they didn't sow seed until this month. keep it too wet, not really a stadium, they have a hill to set up chairs and some protable bleachers. Visitors are too far from field. Visiting team has to walk through the parking lot to get to dressing rooms. This was a problem during one game last year as some of the players wanted to be smart mouth with people in the parking lot. Needs more concessions. They have a few but the choices are few and none. They are always running out of drinks.

Oh well, I am sure this will spark some conversation and hate mail. But thats how I vote.

CNU85

no hate mail here. I've only been to AU and SU. The last time I was at SU the visitors met in a tent at halftime. I think that has changed. Not much to say about AU....the weather was nice when I was there, so it was a good day for sitting along the banks, soaking up the warm sun. Maybe I'll make a few more conference away games in the coming years.

AdmiralPapi

Mosh, I was definitely the slow one when comparing myself and Rocket.  Rocket could probably finish the 40 and have a cold beer before I got to the finish line.  Probably because I'd be drinking the cold beer before I started  ;)

Narch. . .I thought you'd get a crack out of that statement.  Besides...I was sneaky quick HAHA!

Ask Vick how being a fast QB worked out! He couldn't play dead in a cowboy movie. When it comes down to it you still have to be able to step up and make the throw.  I think Parks is going to step up and have a great year, and I expect MU to go at least 7-3. That may be wishful thinking, but I just have a good feeling about this year.

Papi, you aren't as slow as you say. I watched plenty of film of you picking up big yards with your legs and then finishing off the run by running over some poor DB.  You did get the beer part right, though.  I've also witnessed that first hand with you.  I'll never forget that weekend with Scuba in Wilmington.
