I can't wait for the game this weekend. We need to really have a big game with a large crowd expected. I noticed the paper say MU is expecting 10,000 for this one. That would probably be a record if they get anything close to that.

There are just way too many schools in NC right now, and it is getting harder for the D3 schools to recruit. Last year UNCP opened and stole some thunder, and now Campbell is doing the same. Kids are more likely to go to a subpar bigger school than a established smaller school. Some of these kids need to realize what they are getting themselves into.
preach it, rocket...how does sv look this year?

and i'm thinking the paper meant 1,000, not 10,000 :)

i wouldn't be surprised to see 2,000+ with campbell bringing a pretty nice contingency - i'm hoping it will be over quickly as i have to leave at around 1/2 time (that will be a common theme this year...the daughter is cheering, and as much as i love the monarchs, gotta watch the little girl do her thing!)

narch

Quote from: Ralph Turner on September 01, 2008, 03:23:51 PMI think that those kids will realize what is happening.  Kids have been going to Davidson to play non-scholarship D-I FCS ball for a long time.  Pembroke tapped into a local market in D-II.
you've got to admit, davidson is a pretty unique place...and from what i understand, a few of davidson's non-scholarship football players do have track scholarships...might just be a rumor, but it's been floating around for a long time

Quote from: Ralph Turner on September 01, 2008, 03:23:51 PMhe thing that is driving schools to add football is gender ratios in the respective student bodies.  Recruiting will get tougher, but I also believe that the mindset that needs to occur in the South is that D-III ball is good ball and that it is an excellent option for "student-athletes".
with over 30 football playing schools in NC, and only 4 d3 programs, it's an uphill battle...parents and kids in this state (and most of their coaches) seem to have been conditioned to expect football scholarships if they're half way decent - if they don't get one, they see themselves (or are made to feel) inferior - i can assure you that mu, ncwc, gc and guilford are doing all they can to educate folks about the benefits of d3, but it's not easy

These are the schools I know - I make no promises I got the conferences and NCAA level correct:

1. Appalachian (DI-AA Southern)
2. Brevard (DII South Atlantic)
3. Campbell (DIAA non-scholarship Pioneer)
4. Catawba (DII South Atlantic)
5. Chowan (DII CIAA)
6. Davidson (DIAA non-scholarship Pioneer)
7. Duke (DI ACC)
8. East Carolina (DI Conference USA)
9. Elizabeth City State (DII CIAA)
10. Elon (DIAA - Southern)
11. Fayetteville State (DII CIAA)
12. Gardner-Webb (DIAA Big South)
13. Greensboro (DIII USA South)
14. Guilford (DIII ODAC)
15. Johnson C. Smith (DII CIAA)
16. Lenoir Rhyne (DII South Atlantic)
17. Livingstone (DII CIAA)
18. Louisburg (JC)
19. Mars Hill (DII South Atlantic)
20. Methodist (DIII USA South)
21. North Carolina (DI ACC)
22. NC A&T (DIAA MEAC)
23. NC Central (was DII CIAA, now Independent)
24. NC State (DI ACC)
25. NC Wesleyan (DIII USA South)
26. Saint Augustine (DII CIAA)
27. Shaw (DII CIAA)
28. UNC-Pembroke (Peach Belt is DII, but not sure who else has football)
29. Wake Forest (DI ACC)
30. Western Carolina (DIAA Southern)
31. Wingate (DII South Atlantic)
32. Winston-Salem State (DIAA MEAC)

I also hear High Point and UNCG in the football talk.  If HPU starts giving scholarships for Big South play, the talent funnel gets even tighter in Guilford County, where there are already three football playing schools.  In the Metro area, there are already six:  Elon, Greensboro, Guilford, NC A&T, Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State.

Even though, no DIII football this weekend as far as I know... I just wanna say thank God football is back.  It was like the neverending stay at grandma's waiting for this season to start!  Good luck eveyone this year and watchout for the scots and Hightower.  Gonna be a season to remember for the Scots I believe...

Good luck to the Monarchs this weekend ... hope you have an SRO crowd!  If you make the trip to Guilford next weekend, let me know.

Narch, I actually just jumped ship again, and I am the QB Coach at Jack Britt HS. We have an extremely talented team, and we already put up 115 points in our first two games. We actually have to play South View this week so it will be an interesting reunion for me.

10,000 seemed like a lot to me, but now I don't even think MU will get 2,000 with the weather situation this weekend. I guess we will find out soon. Go MU!!!

you've got a pretty fair qb to tutor @ jbhs, don't you - is sherman still on the jbhs staff?  i'm expecting to see plenty of bucaneers becoming monarchs during your tenure there!  if you're at the game saturday, look me up...

I was thinking about this for Virginia over the weekend. I started in the Hampton Roads area and then thought about Richmond and then figured, why not put the entire state list together. I'll put it on my to do list. The reason I was even thinking about it had to do with my old high school......which can now boost that it has 2 former players as college head coaches....Jerry Holmes at Hampton and Mike London at Richmond. I remember watching London play in high school and I remember watching Holmes play...well...on TV for the Jets.

is there going to be a pickem this year?

I hope there will be, but I can't run it this year. Too much going on with my ATR column to run the numbers for a pick-em contest.

I hope someone will accept the duties.

I vote for CNU85

HAHAHA. I wish I could find the time. My fear is I would start out ok, and then something would come up with work or family that would let you guys down. Then the fun would be gone. Heck, last year I didn't have time to turn in  my picks every week.  And now this year, I've joined a second fantasy league. I've been so busy this year I haven't played golf since May!!!!!!! That's a crime!

Been traveling and haven't had time to dig through all the posts. Has anyone stepped up to the plate for this yet. We need someone like CNU85, Hasanova, or Narch that has experience with booking the odds.

Ryan, are you sure you won't reconsider. Your wife won't mind you doing this while tending to the kids after midnight.

Hey, njlincolnlion.  I had heard that was what NC Central was doing (as had WSSU earlier), but wasn't sure if it was a done deal for the Eagles.  Thanks for the confirmation.  Peace
