I thought he made some questionable hires over the years.  I think alot of that was the budget the GC has/ had.  Probally worst now.   The problem now is finding someone that can manage coaching and being the AD (with a vision for all programs).  I really dont know Strable but I do know that he has been on the other end of good people leaving.  That is just the nature of College athletics.  He responded to it well though, So I guess that shows his character.

After all of this,  the interim GC administration are going to have to restore faith that jobs at the school are safe or you will start seeing people jump ship.  If I was working there I know I would be looking for greener fields (or just fields that havent been burnt down).

All of this is just going to make recruiting that much harder.

Hey, Mosh.  I don't know Kim Strable well, but I do know some of his family.  It will definitely make recruiting harder (players and coaches).  I think the 20% pay cut a few months ago also got some staff thinking about leaving.

The dual role (coaching and AD) works at some schools, so I understand why the decision was made, but it is a barometer of how bad things are at Greensboro ... especially since Strable is the sitting President of the USA South Athletic Conference.

GC lays off  Athletic Director.

GC releases incoming players names.  Alot of skill guys, not enough ol-dl.

I hope they retain the core they had from last year and retain most of these freshman or we are in trouble.

Shenandoah is leaving in summer 2010.  There goes the USA South's AQ, after the spring of 2012.

Greensboro is ailing.

If Covenant becomes a provisional member of the GSAC next month, the dramatic difference in the "divisions" is mitigated (6 in the North/ 5 in the South), why are we waiting for the GSAC Men to receive an invitation to affiliate?

Here's the latest from what I've gathered.
GSAC voted to explore a men's affiliation with USAC in spring

USAC had a vote scheduled but it was deferred for presidents/ADs to speak with coaches again. While the actual proposal is an internal document and not being released several coaches from around the league have shared that the way it was put to them would be GSAC men would be a division of the USAC for football, soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis and golf.

In all but football you get no crossover play that counts. So if Piedmont plays Methodist it doesn't count in conference or division standings. Its for all practical purposes a nonconference game. End of season there is some formula for top five from USAC to play the top 3 from GSAC in the tourney. Football is a question mark I haven't been able to find out about. If Shenandoah goes you have nine teams, if CNU jumps you have 8, if GC folds athletics you have 7. Depends on what happens but I can't see conf. games going up to 8 and I don't know what it does to MC's sked where they have both Huntingdon and LaGrange already on the schedule.

Maybe we'll get better idea after the Presidents vote in conference call Aug. 7.

Personally I don't see this working out if there is no cross divisional play guarantee for the other sports. The GSAC needs some guaranteed games. Right now if they were to move methodist and GC  to the south you could have balanced play with 10 in division and 6 outside. Thats just two extra for current men's schedule to the USAC originals and a huge relief to the GSAC guys. Covenant could require some work but if SU goes completely its still a balanced league.

I'm seeking any other thoughts to the current proposal as we've heard it. Anybody see it as a step forward?

Incrementally, it is a good deal.  I don't think that the USASouth men understand how fragile their world is.

When Shenandoah is gone, then the affiliation is the only way that the USASouth keeps its AQ.

Who in the neighborhood moves in the NCAA to join the USA South? VA-Wise?  Southern VA?  We are speculating at best and ranting fanatically at worst.

SU football brings in 91 for the fall to add to the 50+ returnees and five players added for the spring 2009 semester.

The class of 91 players features 65 from Virginia, 19 from Maryland, two from the District of Columbia and one each from Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky and New York. The offensive line, tutored by former NFL All-Pro Joe Jacoby, is the largest position group in the class with 18 members.

You are right, do you know how many student/athletes(Tuition dollars) would leave and transfer. It would be financial suicide for the school to stop playing sports. I bet half the kids at any D III school would not stay at their schools if they couldn't play sports. My own son would not be at the school he attends if he couldn't play football. He would want to go to a bigger school like most of his other friends do.

I agree.  Greensboro (and others) keeps publishing the "1300 student" figure for their enrollment and maybe it is if you count everyone who attends a night class, audits or has any sort of matriculation, but .... I think the number of undergraduates who could actually play in an intercollegiate game is closer to 800.  Since it's coed, half are women.  That means there are 400 men eligible for football.  Even if only 80 are on the team, that's 20% of the male population ... and that's 80 beds Greensboro cannot afford to lose!

If GC folds football, it'll probably be because the whole school folds.  Give them a couple of more years and let's see if they've turned it around.  By the way, the Chairman of the GC Board of Trustees, Bob Stout, stepped down in a closed meeting Wednesday night.  His replacement is R. Carter Pate, a 1976 GC alumnus and Accounting major who's built a reputation as a turnaround specialist for troubled companies.  I wish him luck!

I am in the Tulsa area visiting family and went with my brother to a AF2 football game between the Tulsa Talons and the OK City Yard Dawgs.  I purchased a Talons program and learned that among their mostly D1 players there is this little guy from Averett University named Jeff Hughley.  What a player.  He had at least 3 touchdowns and probably had more.  The OK kicker booted souvenirs into the stands instead of giving Hughley the chance to return kickoffs.  I wish I had been sitting in Section 108 because they got a lot of those balls.  Nice to see a USASAC player so far west, and still playing years after graduation.  He will be playing next week too since the Talons won 90-75 and stay alive in the playoffs.

Was anyone able to hear what was being said at the media day?  It was the 2nd straight year I couldn't hear anything that was said by anyone.  It sounded like their heads were underwater when they were talking or something.  It sounded pretty bad.

If someone was there at it, can you fill me in on what was said?  Did they say what the conference pre-season rankings were? If they did could someone post those please?  Let the debates begin :)

I was just thinking how hard it has to be to recruit at gc right now.  im sure the coaches in the conf are telling recruits ...sure you can go to gc but will they have a school in a few yrs?

we all know gc will weather the storm but its going to make things tough for awhile.  promised sports park?  not in the near future.  but maybe that will  help turn things around if things do get turned around.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.
