Here are my picks for Week #1:

Huntingdon @ Maryville - MC wins it OT.  2 of past 4 games have gone OT.

Christopher Newport @ Wesley - If Ogun is a big time player, then this is the game he needs to show it.....

Averett @ Bridgewater - Had a strong finish in 2008, but Bridgewater a little too strong right now.

Guilford @ Greensboro - Hope they improve this season, but wonder how many returning players on this season's squad.  Head coach hasn't coached a football game in 18 years...

Shenandoah @ Catholic - They are getting better and a win this week will give them early season momentum.

Ferrum @ Emory and Henry - Roster is filled with freshmen with less than 50 returning players from 2008.

North Carolina Wesleyan @ Hampden Sydney - Should be a very good game with H/S edging out NCW.

Methodist @ Campbell - A win is much needed to get Methodist back on track.

i was looking at greensboro colleges roster.  looks like they have some big boys up front...have no idea if they can move...i guess we find out tom afternoon.

Proven qb could be the difference...also greensboro's defense will be better than the quakers.

roll pride.

Hornets look to erase bad memories
Last year's loss to Catholic still stings as '09 SU football opens
By Robert Niedzwiecki
The Winchester Star

Winchester — As he walked off the Shentel Stadium turf following last season's game against Catholic University, a helmetless Dionte Beatty punched the air twice.

The Hornets' then-senior running back might be gone, but the memory of the shocking overtime defeat that launched his pugilistic reaction is as fresh as ever in the minds of the players still around.

"I've been thinking about that [loss] since the game ended last year," senior wide receiver E.J. Brown said this week. "It's kinda hard to believe that that happened, but we have another chance to prove ourselves to them.

"They know we play hard, simple and plain, but I just want it so much more this year because of what happened last year, and the year before."

SU opens its 2009 season at 1 p.m. today at Cardinal Stadium in Washington against a Catholic team that has done everything short of pull a rabbit out of a hat against the Hornets the past two years.

Last season, a bad snap forced the Cardinals to abort a game-tying field goal attempt in overtime, with holder Dan Jones (the third-string quarterback) picking it up and throwing to a wide-open Sean Green (the noseguard), rumbling uncovered down the middle for a 27-yard touchdown that delivered a 23-20 win.

Two years ago, SU was up 6-0 late when Catholic quarterback Keith Ricca, scrambling behind the line of scrimmage, drew the defense up and hit Andre Buis behind everyone for a 43-yard touchdown with 4:43 remaining.

The Hornets are going in this time with the mind-set that Catholic won't get the chance to saw them in half.

"They better know they better come to play, because we are," Brown said. "It's not going to be [a] close game this time."

Shenandoah's confidence was soaring before last season started, too, but it was never fulfilled as the Hornets slumped to a 3-7 season. But with 17 returning starters and the memory of a superb second half against the Cardinals last year — SU outscored Catholic 14-0 while outgaining them 160 to 66 — Brown has good reason for bold thoughts.

Brown, who caught six passes for 35 yards and a touchdown against the Cardinals last year, played a large role in a balanced SU effort. Quarterback Vern Lunsford passed for 148 yards while the rushing game produced 197 against a Cardinals defense that featured Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year Nick Olivero.

The Cardinals no longer have the safety Olivero, and they return just three defensive starters from that game.

"Since they have lost a few key guys, that kind of will help us out a little bit," Brown said. "We still have the same people, so we just got better at what we're doing. They're going to have to watch out. Whoever they put out there in front is whoever they put on in front of us — big, small, tall, little. You've got to block them and you've got to run and make the catch on them."

The Cardinals will also be without their offensive leader in Ricca, a four-year starter who earned the ODAC Offensive Player of the Year last year, along with all of their starting skill players from last season. (Catholic returns four starters from a spread offense that averaged 32.6 points per game.)

Catholic coach Dave Dunn said the Cardinals still plan on putting heavy emphasis on the pass (Catholic ranked 13th in the nation in yards per game last year). He said sophomore Dylan Knight and junior Matt Cantafio will alternate series at quarterback, with the hopes that one will emerge and become the full-time starter later in the year.

Dunn values Knight, who will start today, for his athleticism.

SU senior defensive end Mo Salih said Knight can be quick to leave the pocket, and he believes the Hornets can get the pass rush and the push up front they needs to make him uncomfortable.

Confidence seems to permeate throughout the entire team, and it reminds SU coach Paul Barnes of the Hornets' conference championship days.

"If we play our game," he said, "we have a good shot at winning."
