UVa-Wise might be a candidate as well.
'nova...we don't often disagree, but this is the worst idea ever...the usasac doesn't need another public school

a usasac/gsac merger makes too much sense...

This Automatic Qualifier business should make some interesting changes in the conference. But from what I understand, the changes will be a few years down the road. I wonder if we will revert back to the way it was with the Dixie conference. Remember, before CNU had football there was no AQ for the Dixie(Now USA South).

Personally I think we all enjoy the race for the playoffs and the guarantee that someone will represent our conference in the post season.
'02, '03, '04, '06...    4 years, 4 championships...

except that the problem is just the opposite now...football should keep the aq (assuming nobody else bolts), but all other men's sports would lose it...

Yeah, I was aware of the public school issue when I threw it out there, but they are in the USASAC's geographic footprint.  They're currently in an NAIA  conference that goes all the way from Ohio to Alabama.  I agree, a USASAC/GSAC merger makes a lot of sense - perhaps SU's departure will be the stimulus needed to make it happen.  Someone said earlier that Southern Virginia doesn't field enough sports teams - I agree that if they ever wanted in now would be the time to move in that direction.

WOW, I have some catching up to do. Hope everyone is doing OK,

AUPOP, did I read or dream that the LB for Averett Logan Smyth was going to be used as a running back earlier? I thought he and Huffman worked well together at LB.

From one school who plays SVU in pretty much everything (at least the ones that we have :) )
They've got 8 men (baseball, bkb, cxc, fb, soccer, tennis, wrestling, lacrosse) and 6 women's sports (softball, vb, bkb, soccer, tennis, cxc)

go monarchs! 1-0 in conference :)

Maryville (14) Methodist (17)
Greensboro (0) Averett (50)

The battle of previously (0-3) teams, it was 28 to 13, CNU (1-3) knocks off SU (0-4) in Winchester.  Don't be surprised that CNU gets on a roll after a complete effort tonight on both sides of the football.  SU has lost 13 straight now.

CNU's defense played well in allowing just two FG's by SU after a long punt return that set up SU's only TD of the game early in the 1st qtr.

CNU had 380yds compared to SU's 201.

CNU's Matt Long was 9 for 14 for 207yds with 3 TD's.

SU's offense appears to be regressing.  SU's Keone Kyle was limited to 52yds on 20 carries.  The Rico Wallace kid had another good night for SU with 7 catches for 91yds.

Scoring Summary:

1     10:33     Shenandoah - ROBERTS, Kevin 2 yd run. (LLOYD, Andrew kick is good).
Drive: 2 plays, 8 yards in 0:43.    0 - 7
1    01:21    Chris. Newport - Keith Gaines 10 yd run. (Ryan Trotman kick is good).
Drive: 7 plays, 74 yards in 3:01.    7 - 7

2    00:04    Shenandoah - LLOYD, Andrew 20 yd field goal.    7 - 10

3    10:07    Chris. Newport - T.j. Foster 59 yd pass from Matt Long. (Ryan Trotman kick is good).
Drive: 6 plays, 84 yards in 3:09.    14 - 10

3    04:12    Chris. Newport - Antonio Epps 16 yd pass from Matt Long. (Ryan Trotman kick is good).
Drive: 9 plays, 45 yards in 4:21.    21 - 10

4    11:52    Shenandoah - LLOYD, Andrew 38 yd field goal.    21 - 13
4    08:10    Chris. Newport - T.j. Foster 19 yd pass from Matt Long. (Ryan Trotman kick is good).
Drive: 7 plays, 61 yards in 3:33.    28 - 13

Early in the season ( not sure for how long) he was used as a runing back but that seeems to be over. They were pretty thin at RB till the transfer from Concord (Wilson) came in. Kids a beast. About 250 lbs but moves like he is a lot smaller. Yesterday was the first time I was able to watch him in person, he's pretty good. Between him and the way the oline is playing I would said AU has a legite running game now to go along with their air attack. You will also be glad to know that the kicker has a good leg. Not a great day yesterday as far as PAT and FG but was bombing his KO's.  Great job by AU at homecoming. Big crowd, largest I have seen. Plenty of extra curicular activities going on before the game and as long as you were on the Cougars side of the field you couldn't have asked for a better outcome.

Ferrum loses to NCW 24-14 after leading 14-10 in the 4th quarter. I think we lost three fumbles that quarter, and while Ferrum's defense played really well the first half, NCW must have made adjustments in the second half.

They had the option stymied, and did not give Mayo air in a jug.

Not a good year so far.
BEWARE THE BLACK HATS!

In case anyone was wondering, the conference was 6-18 (.250) in nonconference play. Its the worst record since the conference went to eight teams.

Narch, not just 17 in second half, but 17 in fourth quarter!

I thought Maryville had a punt return coverage issue of sorts but two nearing 50 yards and the late interceptions really hurt the Scots.

The question isnt if CNU will get a head of steam, its if they'll have enough confidence built up in that boiler when they play AU. The way everyone else os playing right now, I'm not seeing a challenge on paper to that being a 1-2 finish but of course grass trumps paper ;D

BTB If you keep up with MC or conference news at www.thedailytimes.com, the full versions of stories seem to be running on the web again.
