Au 28 Guilford 3 final
First, congratulations to the Cougars.  Believe it or not, Guilford's defense was not the real issue.  Guilford muffed three punt returns that put AU deep in their territory - add an interception and an ineffective offense and there's your ballgame.  Second, I will say that most coaches would have taken a knee rather than punch it in from the one with 24 seconds to go, but AU's chose otherwise.  It's the kind of thing that opposing coaches remember when (not if) the shoe's on the other foot.  Third, AUOP, I hope you found the stadium, a restaurant and a hotel with ease.  Fourth, I think it may be a long season in Quakerland.  :)  Good luck to Averett the rest of the season!  Peace

Hasanova, didnt make the trip, both wife and I came down with colds and just were not up to the drive. Caught the game on the web feed. Lap top hooked up to wide screen, worked pretty good.

Have to take my hat off to the Quaker D. Had they not played as hard nose as they did early game could have easily gotten out of control in the first half. To be honest at half I thought AU might have blown this one. Only coming away with 7 points with all the chances given, didnt look promising. Few big plays in the 2nd half and they were finally able to pull away. Know what you are saying about the last td but maybe that one might have been out of frustration from being shut down earlier after 4 shots at it from similiar distance, but if shoe was on other foot I'd be wondering as well. Do have a question. Were there really that many penalties or were the officials just flag happy. I havnt seen the stats yet but if AU doesnt have close to 200 yards in penalties I will be shocked,  I have never seen that many flags thrown, especially in the 2nd half. Seemed like there was an AU penalty every other play. Really hoping the refs didnt know what they were looking at.....like on that last muffed punt. If a Quaker touched it, I'll eat my laptop.

Take Care,
AUPOP, I hope you and your wife are feeling better.  There were a lot of penalties and I didn't think GC touched that punt either, but sometimes it can graze someone's foot and you can't see it in the stands - but that was a tough break for the Quakers.

abngr,

pants changed.

congrats to coach young- monkey is running off your back brother,  memory from the past, washington and lees locker room realizing that my last football game was a loss and knowing i wouldnt play the game anymore.  glad for the d to get the win.  looks like the o still needs to gel but to pull it off in ot like that is bigtime.  senior qb had the confidence to do it.

by the way coach young, need your address to send you a wedding invite. i know your reading.

Wesley is 100 times better (faster, quicker, executes better). But I undertsand that SU was missing their starting QB and RB.......I was told that, but haven't checked to see if it is true or not. CNU for some reason on defense became a lot faster than they were against Wesley. Or maybe Wesley is just that much faster??? It's hard to compare. I think CNU had a tough 2 weeks off after the Wesley beating.

HSC85

I think that Wesley makes just about all teams look slower than they appear against any other team.  In 2007, I watched Hampden-Sydney play at Wesley and they were better at every position.  Passes that were completed all year were broken up that day.  Tackles that were made all year were missed.  I do not think CNU will face a team equal to Wesley in speed and quickness until they get to the playoffs.

Good to see the conference finishing out non conf play strong after rough start.

CNU85 what happened to Jennifer Williams at The Daily News? I thought she always covered the Captains?

After talking to folks at both LaGrange and Huntingdon this year the sense from them is that they will, at least for football, be in the USA South soon. Can't say how accurate some of those predictions are but does feel like if the conferences aren't ready to marry they can still kiss under the football bleachers.

You get the reminder here first for Oct. 3
Maryville is 0-2 on its home turf against Methodist since joining the conf.
Methodist is 0-2 on its home field against Maryville over that same time.
When picking this game consider Maryville is playing at home and good luck figuring out what that means in this series. ::)

Very good article on the Scots Batteredbard.  I'm encouraged by MC's win against a very good LaGrange squad that returned 19 starters from their 2008 playoff team.  Hopefully the young Fighting Scots have gained valuable experience before the conference schedule begins in 2 weeks.

Just some other thoughts:

Great job by CNU, Ferrum and Greensboro in winning their OT games.  It's probably very rare that a conference has 3 OT games on the same weekend that were all won by the conference teams.  I'm sure Greensboro fans are excited about their 2-1 start.

On the flip side, I can't believe the 4th quarter meltdown that NC Wesleyan had against E&H.  Reminds me of MC's win against NCW 4 years ago when the Fighting Scots overcame a 17 point 4th quarter deficit to beat NCW in 4 OT's.

Finally, what the status on CNU's Ogun?  Is he playing??

We understand you are trying to keep it real (you mention it before every sentence, and it is your username) but maybe if you knew some football you would really be able to keep it real.  Did you watch either of CNU's games or just check out the stats?  Over half of the QB's 'runs' this year have been off of pass plays where he scrambled and picked up positive yards.  If sacks didn't count against a QB's rushing statistics, his numbers would be a lot better (even though they're not bad now).  Tunde hasn't been healthy for either of the 2 games...that's evident by 20 rushes for 40 yards.  He needs to get healthy for the conference games, and when he does he will explode and be the All-American back we saw last year.

You are right with one point though, Long-Legister did make a formidable 1-2 punch that could wear a team down.  Maybe it's just me, but I would want a QB that can pick up 14 yards scrambling on a 3rd and 13 play in the 2nd OT trailing  21-14.  Did I mention he gave up his body on the play, knowing exactly where he had to get for the first down and help his team win?  He rushed the ball 18 times for 89 yards.  I'll take 4.94444444 yards a carry all day.  Maybe that's why he had the ball in his hands so much.  And that is keeping it real.

batteredbard, to answer your question about Jennifer Williams, I'm not sure what happened with her.  I can tell you that I saw her after the game and she was trying to get an interview.  She must work for a different newspaper because I haven't seen her with the Daily Press in over a year.

Narch, sorry in advance for any grammatical errors.  I tend to make some when I get worked up.

Ryan,

Great article on the Ferrum Bridgewater game. Really enjoyed it. I put a link to it on my blog.
