So based on what we have seen so far, Is anyone seeing any surprises? For me, I think Averett is flying under the radar...They seem stronger than I expected. Greensboro has already won more games than I thought they would with a new coach, and SU is not producing like I thought they might, but they have had a stout schedule.

Ferrum is about where I thought they would be, but as they have lost a lot of players that should have returned this year...6 that I can think of, My hopes of a conference championship are somewhat diminished. I will keep pulling for them however.

There used to be other FC supporters on the board....what happened to them?

Student council president and the coach's son used to be regular commenters (and haters of the Top 25) on the Daily Dose. I think they stopped posting when the poll was proved repeatedly correct.

With the exception of Bridgewater in the early 2000's, dominating the ODAC and/or USASAC doesn't necessarily equate to Top 25 status.  I can't remember what year it was, but Ferrum started 9-0 and made the playoffs.  A now infamous line from one poster was "Ferrum can put up "25?" on anyone" ... the playoffs proved otherwise.  Some teams in the two conferences are off to a good start, but it's early ... and strength of schedule is a relative thing.  Beating BC at home in OT is a great win, but I bet there are 20+ teams in DIII that would absolutely pound both the Eagles and the Panthers.

CNU85 what happened to Jennifer Williams at The Daily News? I thought she always covered the Captains?

They moved her to another, non sports beat last year in favor of someone else (forgot her name - but she played  computer games during basketball contests). Then I noticed the writer for this week's game was different....so I'm not sure what's going on anymore. Nobody was more dedicated to CNU sports than Jen. Even after being moved, she would attend games - just as a fan!

KEEPING IT REAL

So does anyone know the status of Tunde and Matt this week?

I see you caught that, abnrgr.  Sadly, the 2009 Quakers are probably not one of the 20 teams.  :)  Good to see you online - are you still in CO?  I have a son in his 2nd year of grad school at the U. of Denver.

Not in CO right now nor will I be in the near future. I am skulking about in the NE. Rather not say where as there are people dissatisfied with me and might want to know.  ;) Most people do not care probably but there is always one.

Maybe 7-3 huh?

No doubt in my mind...Way more than 20 I am sure. Ferrum has aspects of the team that are very inexperienced and aspects that are strong. BC was a good win, and hopefully that will carry over against Southern Virginia....but having to travel to NCW next week after NCW lost a heartbreaker to E&H, AND after they have had a week off..... well I worry that NCW will be counted among one of those 20 teams.

abnrgr - best to you wherever you are!   Quaker soccer may be 7-3-1 after Saturday, but Quaker football won't see 7-3 in '09.  I see some games ahead that GC could win, but overall this season's a rebuilding year.  :)

Ferrum's off to a good start - but NCWC will be a strong test.  GC often got "pounded" at Ferrum, but I miss trips to FC - beautiful venue and not so far from where I grew up in Patrick Co.  I don't think GC & FC have played since Guilford's '05 win in Greensboro.

I am heading for the Averett - W&L game tomorrow.  My daughter goes to Averett and it is homecoming.  Has anyone seen either team play this year?  I have only seen Hampden-Sydney games so far.  Will alot of rain impact the field at Averett?

HSC85,

Answer to both of your questions, yes. I watched Averett against Guilford and they looked real good in second half. However, everyone is aware that Guilford is rebuilding this year, so I wouldn't be jumping up and down if I were Averett just yet. They struggled against W&L the last two years and I really don't know why. Well, I do know but still, they should have played better both times.

In the past Averett's field would get real sloppy when it rains. The girls and boys soccer teams play on the field and I am sure they have already had several games this year on that field. This will be Averett's first home game and possibly the field may already show some wear and tear. However, they have and should keep the tarp on the field up until the last minute which will help. If it rains, field goal and PAT kickers will struggle. They will have to move around to find a good spot.
