Crazylegs33,

Explain to me how to make everything line up. Right now when I do the stats for Pickem it looks like I have been drinking Wild Turkey all night and followed a Goat Path home.

Really hate to see Emory & Henry go 4-0 against the USA-South.   E&H won't play Maryville in any sports, men or women.

Sorry you had to see E&H go 4-0 against the USA-South, I sure enjoyed it though. I just wanted to point out that you were incorrect about us playing Maryville, according to your school's website, look at Feb. 26. http://www.maryvillecollege.edu/athletics/schedule-softball.asp?sportNameID=8&sy=8

I know this is softball and was last year, but just wanted to point out we played Maryville in something. Dont know why we dont play each other in anything else; next year I believe we are dropping Greensboro and adding UVA Wise, as many people in the region wanted to see a matchup between the two schools, although I would rather play another D3 or USA-South opponent like Greensboro or Maryville.

I think the toughest team we have played to this point was Greensboro(Not to take anything away from Ferrum or NCWC as they both took us to the wire and we have lost either game), it seemed as if Greensboro matched up well with us and the Thorpe kid is very good. Our defense made some excellent plays as well with three TDs, so that game was a lot closer than the score.

Anyhow, good luck to all the rest of the season, looks like the USA-South is going to be a dog fight.

Thanks to everyone for the stadium address...64, being on the road did not seem to matter last year at Ferrum....Drove all the way from Williamsburg for that one...

Here are my picks-

Shenandoah     @     Christopher Newport

Ferrum             @     NCWC    (Very reluctantly)

Averett            @     Greensbora

Methodist        @     Maryville

I hate the Emory and Henry had such success too.  The only consolation is that it took a score in the last minute in two of the games for E&H to pull out a win.

There are several stats that you won't find printed. These include: Heart, Grit, and Desire To Win. If I were able to quantify these traits into stats, I would still come up with E&H 4 - USA South 0. The Waspers have had to deal with some significant injuries this season. In every game, boys in the wings have stepped up and found ways to win. Their Heart, Grit and Desire are the reasons at E&H is 4 -0 against USA South opponents.  Let's let the Conference play begin.  GO WASPS!!

E&H used to play Maryville in football. I think that they were dropped so that more, in state and regional rivalries could occur. HOw are the Scots doing this year? From the school web site, I saw 1 -2. I am not sure if the info is up to date.

Musupporter,
The season is a marathon, not a sprint. MU has looked much better than the 2-8 team I watched last year. They lost to two quality opponents, and they were in good position to win against CU and E&H. This is still a very young team so be patient. You questioned the coaches, players, and leadership and then turn around and praise Teague. You can't have it both ways. I think Teague has done a great job of leading his team, and I think the coaching staff understands they have a talented team. I talked to a couple coaches after the game Saturday, and I think they have a good grasp of what is going on. I really feel we will start to see this team learn how to win some of these games they are giving away. This team is one big game away from gaining some confidence and making a run in this conference. Methodist was never going undefeated, but they are now battle tested and ready for a good run.

Thanks for your posts WaspsOG57 & waspermike. Congrats on E&H 4-0 start on the season.  Seems like your RB is the real deal.

According to the older MC alums, the MC/E&H games were always hard fought battles over the years.  I'm glad it was pointed out that we still play in softball, but it's a shame that our fans don't get to see us play in football, baseball, basketball, etc.  I know the MC teams want to get E&H back on all their schedules, but we're not getting any interest from the E&H side.  Considering it's only a 2 hour drive, it's probably the closest opponent for both team (except E&H vs. Ferrum).  Though we haven't played football against each other in almost 10 years, according to the media guide, MC has played E&H 65 times which is still the most than any other opponent.

MC is young, but have played better each week.  Methodist will be a big test this weekend to see how this team has developed this season.

Good luck in the ODAC this season.....

Wasp0G57 and Waspermike, congrats on the 4-0 start.  One of you summed it up perfectly, Grit.  I can honestly say that #7 is the only player I have seen this year that truly impressed me.  He is a huge reason you guys are 4-0.  Not to take anything away from the rest of the team, but I have watched Stevens almost single handedly beat MU twice.  Last year at EH he ran wild.  This year at MU, he ran wild.  Not because of blown defense, because the kid just doesn't give up on the first contact.  Seriously, if he was 6', he wouldn't be playing D3.  As a defensive back (20 years ago), I would love to see him laying wood from the defensive side.

Anyway, don't pat attention to the haters.  EH is 4-0 for the same reason other teams are.  4 teams couldn't figure out how to beat them.

Rocket, you are correct.  I questioned leadership and then praised Teague.  My bad.  Teague is a gamer and does a great job.  My opinion remains the same.  Too much talent for what they do.

Defensively, do you agree or disagree that they run a basic heads up package?  How about a blitz package on obvious passing downs?  How about a blitz just for the heck of it?  What do you think about d-linemen stunting every now and then?  Think that might keep the o-line guessing once in awhile?  Maybe drop an end into coverage and blitz a linebacker.  Something other than the normal look is all I am talking about.

Offensively, if your running the ball down their throats, why not keep doing it until they stop it?  If your killing them on the short pass, why not keep doing it until they stop it?  I understand trying to mix it up, but if it works, keep doing it.

I want them to find a way to win.  Obviously not for me.  My playing days are long gone.  But for those kids, mine included.  I hope you are right.  i hope they are getting battle tested and it will pay off.

I think what would make me feel better as well as other fans of MU, is to see the intensity level pick up.  And what would be great is to see that intensity being generated at the top.  The coaches being fired up leads to the players being fired up.  These kids have to be taught that the game isn't over until it's over.  60 minutes of head cracking.  Every player has 6 days to recover.  But these kids need to be assured that if they give it up on Saturday and get banged up, that they were given every opportunity to win regardless of the score.

I question the coaching because I have watched most of these players for 2 seasons and 3 games.  I know what they can do.  I have seen most of them shine on game day.  I wonder if they are being used appropriately.  It also doesn't help to get inside the 20 six times and only score 3 points.  And that little deal of attempting a field goal on 4th and 1 in the red zone and then going for it on 4th and 7 in the red zone would cause any fan to question the method of the madness.

For the record, I truly like both Syphult and Eavenson.  My son loves them.  I think I know what they can do.  Just wonder why their not doing it.

Just a note of hope for better days.  I have watched a team play heads-up defense for two years.  This year they decided to play much more across the line of scrimmage.  They have had 46 tackles for loss in 4 games.  They have defenders that are three year starters in the current system, but it does seem to make a difference when the defense becomes more aggressive.  The coaches know more than me but the change in results have come with the change in tactics.  Maybe they don't have confidence that the aggressive style will work.  I don't know your current situation.  I was just sharing another experience.

On another note,  I watched the Averett vs W&L game last Saturday and in the first half Averett seemed to be on their heels and W&L ran at will.  The second half Averett became much more aggressive defensively and dominated to win the game.  Again just observation to back up your points.

ProudFightingScot

Here are my picks-

Shenandoah     @     Christopher Newport    -    SU is tough on Defense & CNU needs to put it together on OFF.  Still CNU is top dog in confernece until someone knocks them off.

Ferrum             @     NCWC    -    Tossup game with NCWC being at home

Averett          @     Greensboro    -    Averett in a close win, but Greensboro has really improved with new staff.

Methodist        @     Maryville    -    MC finds a way to win against a senior dominated offensive unit.

HSC85, thanks for the response.  I don't want to come across as a coach basher.  These guys are coaches for a reason and Syphult, who has been doing it for a long time has hired them all.  That says alot about their ability and character.

I honestly believe the success of any offense is directly related to the success of the defense.  I know.  You offensive guys see it the other way :D.  I just want  to see this team succeed and I think they can beat any team in the league if they get focused and aggressive.

I am not beating down anyone on the coaching staff.  Just wonder if they see what we see.  Thats all.

Thanks for the comments MUsupporter. Not sure who Stevens is, but the #7 you're referring to is Caleb Jennings. I blocked for him last year in my senior season. The kid is a beast and full of heart, even in practice. Being a former O-lineman I have to give credit to the O-Line which has been hit with injuries lately, two starters were missing from the Methodist game and half of the NCWC game and the replacements have played well, but everybody has injuries. You are right though, he has singlehandedly beaten several teams over the past few years, the kid is really just amazing to watch. Knowing you have him back there is a great feeling. The old cliche is true with him, he can literally take it to the house on any given play. You will get to see him again next year if you make the trip to E&H as he is only a junior.

USASOUTH GURU

Ok I've been associated with this conference for a longtime and have followed this board for years. This is my first post. I have followed the discussion of MU Supporter and others as to MU's early season struggles. Lets clear a few things up.

1. MU's Defensive scheme is not basic. That staff puts in more hours than most. I can assure you of that.
2. We must consider the fact that you have first year starters at Linebacker. There is a reason that there is a new LB coach at Methodist.
3. Questioning Coaches...... Jim Sypult has forgot more football than most people on this board will ever know. If you are a true supporter of the program you will support the players and coaches. What good as a parent does it do to bash the coaches on the internet. This staff is dedicated and works their butt off. most in the office by 5AM and not leaving until 8 at night.

It is very disappointing to read these things on hear.
