CNU85

Another point to mention....at least in the Commonwealth of Va - no college or university, at any level, receives money for athletics from the commonwealth.

CNU ran for over 500 yards and stymied Averett's offense to -3 rushing en route to a 43-12 gutting of the cougars.  :o

Damn!!!!! just when you think they had overcome 2007 and were expanding on what was done in 2008, this happens. Didn't get opportunity to go to game or even listen/watch on webcast.......however I can see visions of 2007 from start to finish. Sounds like CNU's running back who supposedly was coming back from a knee injury had his way with the defense.

Noticed from pictures on school's web page Averett came out with new jerseys this past week. Look nice, but could be a bad luck thing....haha

Hopefully, they can find the offense (from where ever they decided to hide) and rebound this weekend.

AUPOP.........were you at the game? What was your take on things?

Oh yeah, I was there. Defensively, simply put CNU countered AU's speed with brute force. Ogun ( hope thats right) really should have bought his o line dinner that night. They were making truck size holes and when he hit the line of scrimmage he was already in overdrive, if someone was there he pretty much just ran over them. I was impressed, what can I say. Offensively AU just never got anything started. Had a few short drives but them would bog down. O line had trouble picking up CNU's blitz on passing downs and the DE's from CNU created havoc all day with the running game forcing the ball carrier either back into the middle or to deep to turn the corner. Never were able to use any speed on the edges. CNU played pretty close to a perfect game on both sides of the ball. AU didn't look like the same team from the last 3 weeks. They seemed very flat. Might have been those yellow jerseys, I don't know but think we need to leave them on the shelf for a bit. LOL   Fairly small crowd for such a big game. I am getting the impression though in talking with other parents that is the norm. To bad the field isn't on the main campus, would probably help attendance quite a bit.

Oh well, on to next week and a pretty good road trip.......

AUPOP,

For four years I complained (to no avail) about the attendance, support etc., that the University and town of Danville gives to the football team. (I know - win and you will draw a crowd) In 2006 Averett shared the conference title with CNU however it appeared to me that there was only three games with attendance over 1000 that year. Those were the Mount Union game, (everyone wanted to come and see what the number 1 team in the country looked like),  Homecoming and the away game at CNU. The president approved for buses to be charted for the CNU game and the entire visitor side was full. (Most of the crowd cheered but a few just sit there like lumps on a log and read). Mount Union brought a bus load so that helped with that game's attendance. Homecoming as always was a large crowd, at least until halftime was over. Many stayed in the parking lot and continued to party and didn't see any of the game, while others (staff, professors, etc.,) left after the half time activities.

It was like that for four years and appears to be continuing. When my family started tailgaiting from the onset in 2005 there were only 2 other families from Averett that tailgaited. Lots of visitors from opposing team would tailgate but the Averett crowd didn't. The school now tries to have a community tailgate and provides the food, but that isn't even well attended.

There is plenty of room where the field is now to have a nice stadium built. One thing that would help is concessions other than the little rental wagons and bathrooms other than the smelly portables. If you want to go a clean restroom you have to walk a 1/2 mile to the gym. The visiting team has to change in several different rooms where the gym is and they are unable to huddle like a team should, unless they go outside and have to battle the elements and crowd.

Yes there is lots of room for improvement..(last time I was there this year and in 2008 the PA system wasn't working half way). If you are an Averett fan and want to sit in the middle of the field, you have to either sit on the ground or bring a lawn chair. (no body tells you that up front or on the web site). The visitors must feel like they are in the parking lot due to the logistics of getting stands on that side of the field. At anyrate, they have only been playing football there 10 years now and Rome wasn't built in a day. I am sure the AD and SID will see this and ban me from future games, but hey, you have to tell it like it is. There isn't another facility in the USA South as bad as Averett........other than the restrooms where Greensboro plays. But that is the city of Greensboro's fault not the college. One day Averett will be just as nice as CNU, Maryville, Ferrum and/or Shenandoah. However all these need to put concessions on the visitors side too. LOL.

Ok enough of my rambling, back to football. What is it going to take for Averett to become a contender on a regular basis. Ferrum, NCWC seem to be there every year now, Maryville and Methodist are there more than not.

That is a surprise to me- I would have thought that facilities and other capital expenditures would have come from tax revenue. Otherwise, is it through alumni donations, corporate sponsorships, and gate receipts? I am really taken back by this. If this is correct, I had an education today, and have to apologize for all the griping and complaining I have done. The plus side of this is I learned something.

KickerDad,

Didnt mean to hit a nerve....LOL but I can see everything you are saying. I wonder, has AU tried to get the town involved? Seems there are some opportunities there that could be used to boost attendance. If nothing else bring in the local high school bands for home games. We dont have one and you can bet thier parents will show, spread the word so to speak. Lights would probably help a lot. Think people are more into night games than 1:00pm starts. I prefer them, lets me get my choirs done and still watch a live football game.  Think they just need to get creative. Have a jersey Saturday for the local kids, wear your jersey get in free. That kind of stuff. Now I am rambling...LOL

Its funny you mentioned NCWC and Ferrum. Both schools sent coaches through my son's high school as well as did Bridgewater, CNU and Shenandoah. Only reason we hooked up with an AU coach was my son's high school coach recommended we look into AU and set it up.  Prior to that it was looking like either CNU or Ferrum. AU really dosn't have much exposure over here.

Ok I am done....that's my two cents LOL. Just so you know I am doing my part. Every Friday night HS game I got my AU Football shirt on, they ask I give em an ear full....

KEEPING IT REAL

Big game this week.  Lets go CNU!!!
Narch is the man

Averett                 @     Maryville

I will also look this info up -
I believe even capital funding...i.e new buildings, dorms, libraries, etc, also do not come from tax revenue but rather from the issue of bonds....I could be wrong, but I think that's true.

AUPOP,

You have some good ideas and I think you should find out how to join the boosters club. Good luck though, I tried to contact them several times and made mention to some folks that I was willing to help and would like to help, but never got the first email or phone call.

Great ideas though, it's a shame the people that need to see this don't read these boards. Probably don't even know how to log on.

Please don't get me wrong, I appreciate everything Averett University did for my son (Education, football etc) and especially the coaches who turned a smart ass 18 year old who thought he knew everything about anything, into a 22 year old man with a degree in four years (no extra semesters) and gave him the opportunity to play college football (four year letterman) which is not something every high school kid that wants to play actually gets.  My son graduated and is now working in Physical Therapy for an Orthopedic Surgeon who I might add use to be team doctor for a pro football team and William & Mary College before slowing down. I never though I would see this day 4 years ago. When we first visited Averett, Dunlevy (headcoach) told us that the primary goal for these kids was getting a diploma. The moto then was leave Averett with a diploma in one hand and a championship ring on the other. My son and many of his teammates were able to do just that. I am babbling here.....what I want to say is my complaints are in fact my wishes for things at Averett. So for those folks at Averett that can do something about this stuff and read this, please make it happen. The athletic teams and coaches (all of them) at Averett deserve more.

85, hope you are doing OK....

Question, how much does having a former Senator (Paul Tribble) as President of the University help with fund raising?
