To Ferrum - on heck of a game today vs. AU.  Both teams played extremely hard and we couldn't stop your QB (he looked exhausted in the OT's, he left it all out there).  But 5 turnovers will kill you.  Great game on a beautiful day in a nice setting.  (PS - the grounds crew who takes care of your baseball field should get a raise - that look almost major league quality).

WFU34

CNU85 - forgot the "A" game? How about giving credit to Maryville.  Sometimes the performance of one team is cause by the actions of the another team.  I learned long ago, that you never raise one's self by lowering others.  Whatever your opinion is - the only result that counts is the score and on this day, Maryville scored more.   A few years from now no one will remember the details of the game, they'll only see the score and if you got a "W" or "L".

As for the comment that a high school team could have beaten either one of these teams - I understand the frustration but even the best high school teams rarely have 4 -5 players (usually less) that have the skills to produce at any level of college football much less an entire team that could compete.

Now I could say something cynical about schedules, performance, etc.  but what's the point?

It's a great day.  What more could you ask for with the conference championship and NCAA bid coming down to the last game of the season?  Next week Averett and NCWU will play for who gets the NCAA bid.  Win or lose, having control of one's own fate is all you can ask for.  Occurring on the last game of the season just adds to it.

I have to agree with this statement...Ferrum had this exact same opportunity last year, but it was not to be for the Panthers...CNU was the conference representative, and I to this day remember that game winning field goal barely making it across the crossbar. I also remember all of the positive comments by the CNU supporters on this board. Comments about how both teams left it all on the field, and how many Ferrum fans came to Newport News, and maybe did not have enough seats to accomadate them all...It was all positive, and I remember feeling very disgusted that Ferrum did not win. To have fought so hard and come so close. It was still gratifying. All I had to do was think back to when Ferrum was the conference rep in the first round of the playoffs. I dont recall the year, ('05?)but you will remember FC was 9-0 going into that game, and CNU POUNDED the Hell out of Ferrum...at Ferrum...I rode all the way out there for that. To end 9-1 was good, and I remember the class that CNU showed when FC was presented with the Conference champions trophy...They stood there and applauded, knowing that even the spanking they had just laid on FC was not going to put them in the playoffs. (I then rode to Wesley DE to witness another spanking)

I guess my point is that teams abilities and skills change, and some years are better than others. Ferrum will hopefully finish 5-5 this year...A far cry from where I predicted, but they will be back next year, and I will be in their corner knowing that you cannot win them all every season, but hoping that next season will one that they do.
CNU will be a force to be reckoned with next year, as will many of the USA South Schools....Stay Supportive-Good times or bad...One game should not change anyone's allegence

Go Panthers!
BEWARE THE BLACK HATS!

Obviously you guys don't know much about Phoebus High School.

They have won numerous high school Virginia AAA Football State Champions including last years (2008). They are currently unbeaten by the way and probably going to win it again.

They have several players in the NFL and always have numerous D1 football players on their rosters.

WFU34

Falcon2720 - Maybe you're not aware of the record then of Indenpence HS (Charlotte, NC) - 2 years ago had the nation's longest winning streak at over 100.  Has won I believe 6 4AA (largest classification) since 2000.  Or Byrnes in SC, or Don Bosco in NJ, etc. - all powerhouse high school teams and there are many more, too numerous to list, across the nation.   All which have produced talent for the next levels.

But high school teams are just that, teams made up of high schoolers.  As good as they may be, they're 15 - 18 year old  kids still maturing.  There is always the exception but maturity is a major factor.  Most incoming freshmen at any college level don't play significantly and if they do, it's usually at running back where talent can overcome their lack of command of the mental aspect of the game.  For instance, how many freshman QB's contribute at any level and perform well?  Not many.   Coaches in college, at all levels, get paid to win.  Most aren't going to risk games with freshman unless they absolutely have to.

To illustrate that point (although not a direct analogy), look at what Wake Forest has done recently to be competitive (even though they are 4 -6 this year, they just as easily could be 9 - 1, the Shenandoah of this year's ACC).  No one is confusing their talent level with top level programs, but they redshirt everyone because a 2 star talent that's a redshirt senior is usually a better player than a 5 star freshman recruit.   Those several years of maturity holds true in the difference between high school and college.

Could an all-star team of high schoolers, i.e., like the in the US Army game, beat a small college team?  Possibly, there use to be an annual college all-star game (I believe it was discontinued in mid-60's) which pitted all-stars against the reigning NFL champion in a preseason game and the college kids may have won once or twice.  But there's a big difference in every level.

Maybe you should explain this to the coaches at methodist. they have a ton of freshmen starting and others seeing a significant amount of playing time. they have very good freshmen on the offensive side of the ball. some play and some dont. number 80 is a very good receiver and number 25 is a very good rb. i think their punt returner and kickoff returners are also freshmen and they show speed but lack some maturity. on the defense side they have freshmen starting at linebacker, and one a corner. the freshmen cornerbacks are very good but still have room to mature and it showed a little last night. there was a really good freshmen linebacker playing but i dont know what happen to him. number 36. i havent even seen him on the sideline in the past 4 games i think until last night but the person wearing 36 was not him. any methodist followers know what happen to him?

The game between Methodist and Greensboro last night was ugly. The first half was great each team struggled to get any real offense going and the defenses were playing great. a 4th and goal from the one for greensboro was stopped and methodist defense looked like they came to play for once. it was 7-7 going into the half. the second half was a different game tho. greensboro came out and just spanked methodist and their defense. a defense that allows 230 yards rushing a game and 180 a game this year came out in the second half and greensboro exploited them. someone on here said greensboro only averaged 64 yards rushing a game but last night they rushed for 126 and passed for 297. Greensboro was able to run the ball up the middle pretty well. not as easy as other teams have but thats also not greensboro main game plan. they were able to pass the ball at will against the methodist defense as well. there were two interceptions one by a corner for methodist and it was a really nice interception but other then those two turnovers the greensboro passing game tore methodist apart. missed tackles killed the team as well. there were times when the running back should have been stopped at the line but the defense could not wrap up or run their feet on contact. they kept letting the runningback move the pile forward. the defense performed well but for some reason still can not stop the running game up the middle. besides the game up the middle, the few explosive plays that could have all come back from either holding or pass interfernce, the defensive players should not be ashamed.

for the officiating, it may have been the worst game to watch. 14 penalties for MU and 11 for GC. there were personal fouls almost every other play. the offensive lineman for methodist 63 was killing the gc defense when he was blocking them and he would take his man clear outta the play and then they would throw a flag on him. one of the best offensive lineman ive seen play for methodist. he even caught a pass last night. back to the officiating tho. a late missed pass interference on greensboros last passing touchdown was horrible. the entire stadium could see the wr push off the defender. they missed a ton of facemasks and holding calls as well. officiating was horrible for both teams but since i pull for methodist it seemed like the officials were pulling for greensboro.

for the coaches...Sypult needs to do one thing. pack up your office and get the hell out of methodist. once again he could not control his teams emotions and it showed that this team lacks discipline and it reflects their coaching. he wasted a timeout early in the first half to give another one of his peptalks that apparently dont work and then wasted another timeout when the defensive coach subbed a lineman in and he started screaming no no dont let him play. all the bad calls that happened against methodist and this man just stood on the sideline and did not question a thing. then at the end of the game where i found that this man does not need to be coaching at this school anymore. greensboro got the ball back with 3:21 left in the game winning 35-20. methodist had two timeouts left. greensboro ran the ball three straight times and the coach did not call a single timeout to save time for his offense. the methodist defense had stopped greensboro and forced a 4th and 4 and the next play they threw for a touchdown they should have been called back from a pass interference that was very easy to see. so he let them take the clock from 3:21 to :37 when methodist got the ball back. If your going to give up on the game, how do you expect your team to play for you and respect you as a coach? Use your timeouts and try to save some time for your offense to possibly score once more. you want your team to play better yet you cant coach well at all. there were many parents after this game that were furious with the coaching and how the game turned out. a horrible game was concluded by a horrible coaching performance at the end and all throughout the game.

good game to greensboro and they played very good on defense. they are a much improved team from the past years and their offense looked very good. particularly when the opponent starts to hang their head, greensboro knew how to put the nail in the coffin and finish the game.

once more week and im dying to see how many yards CNU can rush for against the methodist defense.

went to watch the game on pridenet and it looks like gc didn't pay the cable bill :)

the monarchs are down 21-7 and gc is averaging 5.4 yards per carry...not good for the monarchs - if livestats is correct, mu has 5 fumbles in the game (but they've only lost one)...ugh...i might have to go all cnu85 if the monarchs lose :)

This backhanded slap would lead you to think that the game was not on PrideTV. It was. We had about 50 viewers most of the game.

Perhaps someone needs to upgrade their dial-up account...

Last night's score: GC 42, Methodist 20

Updated Webcasted hours of live video: GC 6,000, Methodist 0

Natural, I do not know what game you were watching. The reason that I say that with the officiating is because there was a blatant EXTREMELY late hit on Adams on that last rushing TD that he had. I saw that from a mile away, I would of thrown the flag and sent that guy packing but yet NO FLAG. There was no since in that hit. So you can not say the officials were pulling for Greensboro when you miss a call like that.

"There was no since in that hit."

I contend there was no "sense" in that sentence.  :)

Congratulations to the Pride.  If they can get by SU, it'll be the most wins in their program's history!

WFU34,

Did I ever say that a high school team could beat a college team. NO. Read my post again. A fellow poster mentioned he thought Phoebus could beat CNU. I was giving you information on Phoebus.

I was just pointing out the accomplishments of Phoebus High School, a great high school football program and national powerhouse.  Virginia AAA is the highest classification in the state btw.

Falcon2720

I agree with Natural Selection.  Methodist football keeps going downhill.  Sypult needs to resign.  He has been the coach for 18 years and has a losing record with 0 playoff appearances.

NCWC has had football for 6 years and is about to make their 2 playoff appearance with a win Saturday.

WFU34

NaturalSelection - your comments reinforced my point - alot of young players, i.e., freshman playing = loses.    In MU's case, probably freshmen are playing out of necessity.  Possibly (I haven't any idea), the upper classmen have lost their focus on the team.  It does happen.  Even though they may be 20 - 22 year olds, they're still kids.  Football's a tough sport to play mentally and physically.

As some of the kids get older, their focus often moves to other things beyond football.  That's why DII & DIII coaches have to bring in so many freshman each year (rarely is a team loaded with seniors that aren't playing).  If the program isn't successful, the upperclass attrition is usually very high.  It's a Catch-22, without solid upper classmen on the team, the losing ususally continues.

You missed it too - reread my post. I said the goal was to get a W and MC got it and I said congrats.  I saw a poorly played game by both teams and I get blasted for it. Sorry, but I saw a bad game. As far as the HS school....last year Phoebus put 8 kids into Division 1 programs......8!! For the year, their D outscored their opponents! That's all I was referring to. Frustrating yes, crying, no. I saw a bad game. You weren't there, soo......nevermind. I'll keep it shut.

In case anyone missed it in my post..... Congrats to MC for the win!
