By the way, congrats on the win, PFS....the sportsmanship displayed by the Scots was very admirable.  It showed me the level of respect Maryville has for CNU, which was much appreciated by this fan, particularly given the disappointment of the season.

Thanks Swish!  CNU is year in and year out the favorite and deserves all the respect they get.  Respect is indeed earned not given and CNU has definitely earned it.  We are all very proud of the fight our guys had and loved the level of intensity they showed.  After 3 straight losses, they could have packed it in.  I was just so excited to see them get up for a big game.  While winning this game doesn't make or break a season and it doesn't erase the sting of losing those previous games, it goes miles in the way of recruiting.  I hope to see the same level of fight this week to close out the season against Ferrum.

Good luck this week!

It's funny how quickly people forget.  Sypult built the Methodist program from basically the ground up.  When he has had players, he has won, when he hasn't, he's lost (just like most coaches).  I was a part of both winning teams and losing teams with Sypult and I can tell you the man can coach.  Up until the past year or so I don't think you could find many former players or parents of players who had anything bad to say about Sypult.  I don't know believe the man has forgotten how to coach in the past year.  Maybe his players today just don't hear his message or refuse to hear his message.  Outside of my dad and grandads Coach Sypult was probably one of the most influential men in my life, so yes, I'm probably a little biased and quick to defend him.

As far as a defensive lineman being benched for jumping offsides...I'd be willing to bet there is more to the story than that.

So maybe I lied.  I will make another post.
I thought NCWC was the team to beat, not CNU from day one.
CNU fans should be happy they do have three teams in the playoffs.
I never thought GC was going to finish last.  Anybody that knows me knows I believe that every year.   ;D

I was an assistant coach on a high school girl's basketball team last year. We played in a tough conference.  (Where I was last year, it's not like NC where there are 3A, 2A conferences etc.  The conference is whoever is around you.) We ended up having 6 games that year against teams that made it to the regional finals.  We also made it to the regional finals.

I made it a point from day one that our players were going to be in good enough shape to compete every game we played.   I wanted them to have enough gas to get through the 4th quarter.  I saw the results in our regional semi game.  We just outlasted that team because we were in better shape. Enough so that in the regional finals we faced a team that ran a total delay offense against us, we lost by 7.

The point is in the USASouth anybody can beat anybody on any given day.  I think the ones that continue to win are those that are in great football shape.  From what I understand, The Pride went through a pretty intense camp.  I think it has paid off this year. Coaches in the conference should push their players as hard as they can.  I think to the point where the athletic trainers say "ease up a bit coach"  :D

I am no longer coaching high school ball, because I've moved on to bigger and better things.  With that said, that is why my posts will be limited on here.

You have every right to defend your former coach and mentor but to sit at the game and hear the parents I doubt a lot from this team will say the same thing. Which I truely believe is a shame. I'm sure there is more to the lineman not going back in but there is a lot of problems going on in the program, which was evident in the last game.  There needs to be more control taken by the coaches and make the players accountable.  The strength and conditioning is not there.

NaturalSelection

archrival: you are completely right...the strength is not there. they are in decent shape but i do not think they are in amazing shape. the dline does sub pretty well and it seems to help them quite a bit when it comes late in the game. same goes for the receivers.

admiralpapi: he has plenty of players right now that can play, want to play, and have proven that they deserve to be on that field. they have guys that have devoted themselves to that team and making the team as good as possible on and off the field. yet these guys do not play after sticking with the program and believing the program for four years. i think sypult can not see the talent when there is some. they have a very good qb on the sideline that is capable of picking apart a defense but instead he sits every game, even after the starter makes a mistake or they get blown out. their depth at wide receiver is great. they have freshmen receivers that play like they have been at the college level for a couple years. their running game is good but not as good as it used to be. may be based on the scheme or the change in the offensive line coach. they have the offensive weapons to run up the score but have found a way how not to use it. as for the defense they have playmakers at every position minus linebacker. their safety may be the best in the conference. they have amazing corners, and their dline is great. their linebackers are their weak point from the inside to the outside minus a freshmen and a senior outside backer. once again maybe it is their scheme on defense that cant stop the run, or the missed tackles, or the lack of experience in some positions. lastly the team is missing that fire for the majority of the players. they dont have the mentality of going out there and just hitting someone in the mouth on every play. there are a select few that can hit but there are not too many.

hopefully they can come out this saturday and beat CNU on senior day...would be nice to see the twenty-some seniors leave with a good taste in their mouth. sorry CNU fans  ;D

AUPOP,

Are we healthy enough to go up against NCWC this weekend.

Far as I know, hope so, we are going to need them all.

Game is at AU NaturalSelection.

The thing that worries me is size on the line. Last year we couldn't match up O line vs. D. Line with them and running between the tackles was next to impossible. We were able to open it up a little with passing but they were just too much for us. Not sure what they lost to graduation but looking at their record and the scores they didn't loose much.

Averett will have to give everything they got and then some. I wish I could go this week but the honey do list is way to long from building up from the past 4 years.

Kicking game has been much better. Still a little short on the KO's but the punting game has been really good, especially lately. I HOPE AU sticks to its strengths. Get in the spread and stay there, run there traps, counters and draws out of it and mix in the pass. Spread the defense and use their speed I really hope to see some no huddle. Qb runs it very well, limits substitutions and can wear down the defense.  They do a very nice job with it and have been quite successful when they do. I know they have been working on some things that they really haven't shown yet. Don't know if they have been holding back or they just are not ready yet to go with it. Going to be interesting though, looking forward to a good game.

AUPOP & Kickerdad - AU's pretty healthy and they'll be ready.  Hughes (freshman running) is banged up - but other than that, they're good to go.  I suspect you'll see plenty of intensity from all the seniors, particularly Watson and Squillini on offense and Huffman and Cooper on defense.

It's not going to be an easy game by any means, NCWU is statistically superior in every major category in the conference (even in take-ways which surprised me).  A key will probably be if AU can get off to a quick start in Q1 (really the Greensboro game was the only one they really did) or at the very least, not let NCWU get out of the gate quickly.

AU is not going to out-physical them.  The word I have is that NCWU looks good on film.   To win, AU is going to have to play smart, turnover-free ball offensively, be aggressive and prevent any long plays on defense while being mistake free kicking game, i.e., make FG's if required and continue the improved punting.

The advantage I see that AU has is in the return game - I haven't seen anyone in the conference as elusive on punt returns as Jeremy Dixon.  In last week game, his return for the TD swung the game's momenteum.

GuyFormerlyPSBBG posted a few back about conditioning - AU is in good shape as is evidence by their performance in the second half of games (and overtime).  All those times these guys had to run up that hill carrying 125 lbs sandbags in camp is paying off.

It seems this year almost every AU home game its rained.  Let's hope that the weather's good so the game is decided on the field by the players and not by the elements.  Check that last comment - the only day it was nice this year was the CNU game and they lost.  Pray for a downpour!!!!

I believe that if its a 7 point game or less at halftime - AU will win.

WFU34

AUPOP - very good analysis on AU's improved punting and spread offense.  If you noticed this year - when they run the non-huddle or "two minute" drill, the passing game has been far more effective.  The QB is far more comfortable in that because the plays "flow" and he sees the field better.  He has more options in checking down on the routes.  Sprinting out and moving the pocket has also produced several big passing plays this year.  They've been far less successful when they get caught up in obvious passing downs.  They have to stay out of those situations on Saturday.

In AU's offense - they're most effect when they use the pass to set up the run because the offensive line is not going to overpower the defense.  That's not to say they are effective, but their not going to pound it on the ground for 15 plays and 80 yards in a drive.

I think you'll see some surprises too, no sense holding back.

WFU34

Before I get ripped for another typo - in the last post I meant to write "not to say they aren't effective"

NaturalSelection

a huge factor in the NCW and MU game was turnovers. If AU can force turnovers early they will shock NCW and be able to get on top quick and the way they play they may be able to get NCW outta their game.

WFU34

I hope you're right - they need a quick start.   If AU let's NCWU play their game earlier, could be a long afternoon.

Bishop64

If AU runs a no huddle, should be an interesting game as NCWC also runs the no huddle. If not interesting, at least quick :)
The only easy day was yesterday
