Congratulations to Maryvile's Kyle Chewning for earning an All-American selection. MC's all-time leading tackler and three-time All-USA South performer. It was a pleasure watching him over the past four seasons. He will be an excellent teacher/coach in the future.

MIT didn't face nearly the caliber of competition that other players named did. In fact, the fact that four of the top seven rushers were from the same conference suggests that perhaps the NEFC just doesn't play good rush defense.

Plenty of other men put their hearts and souls into seasons as well, you know. That's what's real. We keep it real -- you don't really have any idea what Division III's reality is, though.

Doesn't make you qualified to judge D-III players on paper.

Some former D-1 player was complaining about All-American selections on the D3football.com team.

He eventually acknowledged that his D-1 experience did not necessarily qualify him to judge D-III talent on paper.

He appears to have deleted his posts on the topic.

Where's the "love" for Jeremy Dixon of Averett?  He was the only USA South player to be named to either the 1st or 2nd team D3 All-American squad (2nd team as a Return Specialist).

If there was a shortcoming in the Averett coaching staff this past year was not utilizing him enough.  Possibly one of the most exciting players in the conference in some time (3 TD's on returns).  Only returned 6 KO's for and average of 49 yard average and 2 TD's.  If you take out the 2 TD's, he still averaged over 30+ yards on the returns.

Provided Averett doesn't lose any of its talented freshmen (always a potential issue in D3) and the line gets stronger, they should be extremely competitive again next year in the conference.

An early indication as to how Averett and NC Weslyan are next year is that they start off the season with an early common non-conference foe, i.e., Hampton-Sydney.  Averett opens the season against them, NCWU plays them in Week 2.

Have a good New Year.

D-I and D-III not so different: New SU Athletic Director Wayne Edwards weighs in
What are the differences between division-I and division-III sports programs?

SU's Wayne Edwards:
Quote"There's scholarships at D-I and none at D-III, but you still have student athletes, you still have coaches and they still want to win. So when you talk about differences in many cases they're grossly overstated. Because in the final analysis, student athletes want to play, coaches want to coach and you don't go out to lose, you go out to try and win."

I'd have to say that while that is a positive perspective to put forth to the press, I do not believe for a min. that this guy is foolish enough to think that SU could compete on the same level with a Virginia Tech, UVA, Alabama, or Texas. While there is equity in the desires of the players and coaches, that is really where the similarities stop.

How about monies to hire the best coaches....Do D3 schools have the kind of money budgeted to attract someone like Nick Saban, or Mack Brown.....
Unfortunately, it does come down to money for talent in the form of scholarships, and I do not see how this is grossly overstated at all.

D3 without scholarships is the purest form of college football.....made up of coaches and players who do play just because they want to, not because they are getting paid to do so....or at least paid really well as a coach.

This is positive spinning for the media.

I don't know. I think Shenandoah could compete pretty well against this year's UVA team. (Sorry Kickerdad! ;D )

I didn't take the quote to really be a skill-on-skill comparison. As you alluded to, the quote I think was meant to be a little more abstract in terms of competitive drive. Whether a student or coach at the Div.-I or III level, you play to win. The level of passion the coaches and players put for is what's negligible. The talent typically isn't anywhere close between the two levels, but the love of the game is.

Personally, I don't give most Division I athletes as much credit for playing the game for character and leadership growth as I do for Division III athletes, but the lifelong thrill of taking the field is the same.

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

I think this is the premise that was being put forth...I, like you doubt he was making competitive comparisons. His quote left room for liberal interpretation I thought.

As I have said many times......the only thing that kept me from playing D1 was speed, size, strength, and not enough talent. Otherwise......I was right there.  ;) :D
