Another article came out yesterday. Details the difficulties the Ferrum coaching staff is having deciding on a starting QB....Davis indicated that Brubaker...the other QB that is contention to start, is faster than Mayo....Mayo is very fast, so I thought this could not be possible. I have been in contact with a player on the team, and he says that he is about the same as Mayo, certainly no slower than Mayo.

That is encouraging.

"difficulties the Ferrum coaching staff is having "

I bet the rest of the teams wish they were having such a difficulty. :)

Aw......... the problems of deciding between speed merchants.

In a way I agree...I do not know much about Brubaker...from what I hear, he is more of a runner than a passer. Mayo can do both, but is working back into the offense, and must have the ability not only to run or pass, but to recognize, and execute...also must be able to lead the team.

Of course they will have the option offense again, and from what I hear, even though Mike Vann will not be back...they are very very very deep at RB.
Here is that second article I referred to:

Wow, I havent been on this board a quite a long time... However I do love the USA South Conference.  Looks like this is going to be another great year for this conference.  As for my picks, I think is comes down to Averett NCW this year.  I think Averett has the complete package and will be a great football team this year.  NCW may not be as complete but they have more athletes than anyone in the conference.  I could very easily put CNU up there as well but didnt just because I don't know much about them coming into this year, maybe some of you colonels can fill me in?  CNU is the best coached team in the conference in my opinion, so they will always be solid. So as I see it
1) Averett (is Squillini back? He was a great WR)
2) NCW (athletes everywhere... Their defensive line can compete with any dline in D3)
3) CNU (They always have great RBs, they come outta nowhere every year)
4) Shenandoah
I think the hornets are gonna bounce back this year after a tough year last year of losing so many close games last year.  This team fought hard every game, as I was able to watch them many times on their schools website.  Its amazing how hard they played even at the end of the year when they kept losing 3 point or less ball games.  I think they win those games this year, lucks back on their side???
5) Ferrum (I hear they lost alot, but their ball control game and D is tough)
6) Maryville
I really want to rank maryville higher, but it seems every time I read up on them they are having to overcome so many injuries.  I think Coach Ierulli is an outstanding defensive coordinator.   Every year though they get done in through injuries, I think it was the first game last year they lost their sophomore QB HUNT to a career ending head injury?  That kid was awesome... could fly and was extremely accurate.  Then Conner (big tough qb) took over and I heard yesterday that he has season ending shoulder surgery and a freshman starting at QB.  They have the best secondary in the conference and that will keep them in most games, but with so many young players in i find it hard for them to compete at the top level.  They are some tough kids tho, the scrappiest football team Ive ever seen.
7) Greensboro
8) Methodist

Whoever represent the USA South in the national playoffs this year, I hope they take it a long way!!

D3football101 - I like your pick of Averett.

No, Squillini is not back (he played professionally in Finland this year.  For those of you that aren't aware, there is upwards of 100 "professional" teams in Europe playing American style football.  The word "pro" has a different meaning over there compared to the NFL - the guys from the US usually get room & board, $1,000 - $1,500/Month paycheck during the season and may have to take a "job" but if you're 23 or so, no serious obligations, what a way to experience Europe before you have to enter the "real" world.  John Grisham wrote a great fictional book on the subject a few years back called "Playing for Pizza".)

As for replacing Squillini, Averett is looking forward to Jeremy Dixon (preseason DIII All-American) to fill that void.  Not to minimize expectations for Averett but if they get out of the gate slow, i.e., today vs. Hampton-Sydney, one contributing factor may be that they are without last year's starting QB (2nd team USA South in 2009).  He's out for the first 2 games, not returning until they play Washington & Lee, so they will be inexperienced in that position.  Still, if the improved O-line is healthy (had some nagging injuries), their running game should be able to compensate.

I experienced my first high school football game in FL last night.  The atmosphere was incredible, i've never seen a high school team run out of an inflatable tunnel.

The game is a much faster game than what I've seen in the past for a high school game.  The guy in front of me said these teams weren't even that good. The players weren't that big either.

If the USASouth wants some speed, look to FL thats for sure.  I am not even sure there are many if any d3 schools in FL.

Apparently the QB for the home team is going to USF, i hope they are an option team, because he couldn't throw the ball at all.  It was pretty much QB keepers the entire game.  He did break off an 85 yard run for a TD.

WFU34

GuyFormerlyPSBBG - if you look at Averett's roster, about 25% of the players are from Florida, virtually all their key skill players, i.e., speed.  You're also right - Florida's a key recruiting ground because there are so many players and really very few college options in state.

If a kid doesn't go D-I in state (there are 7 now, UF, FSU, UM, USF, Central, Fla. Atlantic & Fla. Int'l), the only other options are Jacksonville and FAMU.  No D-III there.  Alot of talented Florida kids potentially never go beyond High School ball.

not too much positive to say about the monarchs on the field today...but the crowd was great, the band was great and the weather was great...i love college football :)

cnu85, thanks for the hospitality today.  the captains should be proud of the effort today.  they fell behind early and did not quit.  there are plenty of players who want to make plays and they should do well in the league.  good luck next week against salisbury.

What a laugh. Took laptop to Knoxville to watch Maryville online as we watched Alcoa alums playing for UK at Roosters and their wireless blocks streaming video. Rigged a cell phone connection and watched a jumpy version of first half.

Scots struggling with Conner out. Story abut that posted on http://www.thedailytimes.com/article/20100904/BREAKING/309049998
