D-BAT

SU (7) Maryville (6)

Good for the SU kids as they break the 13 game losing streak.

SU's defense came up big today.

MV's Williams was 13 of 17 for 125yds and no INT's.

MV's missed FG the 1st quarter is the difference.

great game between the panthers and monarchs today...the monarchs were down 24-3 at one point, but battled back and were down 24-10 with the ball on the 10 just before half time - the monarch offense bogged down and the monarchs went for it on 4th and 4 with 1:00 left in the half rather than kicking a field goal - i questioned that call at the time...thought the  monarchs should take the points and go into halftime on a high note, especially knowing that they would get the ball first in the second half - first posession of the 2nd half, the monarchs marched down the field and scored to make it 24-17, held ferrum and were forced to punt, at which point mayo returned his second punt for a td on the day and fc went up 34-17 - i thought the game was over at that point, but the monarchs were game, came all the way back and tied it, only to see fc march down the field - the mu defense held strong, then blocked a short fg attempt with no time on the clock sending the game to ot...amazing

after trading td's in the first 2 ot's, fc scored and mu stopped the 2 pt conversion...the monarchs moved the ball to the fc 6 and had 1st and goal when the center snapped the ball about 10 yards over the qb's head, and the monarchs faced 2nd and goal from around the 25 - on 4th and 7, the monarchs threw an incomplete pass to end an epic game....that should have never gone to ot - had the monarchs kicked a fg back at the end of the first half, they would have won the game in regulation with the blocked fg attempt

some great individual numbers...subbing for travis murphy (who played injured last week, but was unable to go today), john glenn had a 300+ yard day - mayo was an absolute beast for ferrum, returning kicks (how many college qb's return punts...and do it VERY well?) and running the option with aplomb

all in all, great game

Saw a very good football game today at CNU. Little warm but a beautiful day and as aways CNU was a great host.

AUPOP, was very impressed with Averett's running back and the defense played great. Logan S. made a great run on a kick off and I can understand why he was used at running back some. However he is a beast at LB. He and Mario complement each other very well. I was impressed with the kickers. The punter especially looked good. The field goal kicker started off with a bang but got a little shaky on two. His kickoffs were outstanding.
If memory serves me this was the first time Averett has beaten CNU on their home field. The two previous visits were close but no cigar. This time they got all gears going. Congrats to the Averett team and coaches. They looked exceptional today and hopefully they can stay healthy and continue playing strong.

Narch,

Great recap. I listened to a wonderful first quarter, and a comfortable second quarter. Then it became anything from anxious to gut wrenching. I have seen 2 Ferrum games, and they have talent, but are not the complete team that I thought they would be. Mayo is a talent, but they cannot solely rely on him. I picked them to be 4-6, but I am not sure if that may not be a little optimistic.
How did they look to you? I know they have struggled with injuries, especially on the O line. They get back on the bus and head to Greensboro next week. Hopefully they can win that one too.
I am constantly frustrated by their secondary, as they seem to play a really "soft" coverage, and allow a lot of short passes underneath...I know this is a speed issue, and they give a big cushion, because they do not want to get beat deep.

At any rate, I am sure these two retiring coaches will never forget this game.

I forgot to pick and its a good thing. The only one I would have picked right was AU over CNU and NCWC over GC. The rest I would have taken a spanking on.

allen c - ferrum looked like the best 1 win team i've seen in a long time...there o-line is HUGE...the lg must be 6'3", 330...i'd run behind him all day - mayo has a cannon, but he sprays the ball too much...i'm sure fc doesn't throw the ball much in practice, either, so it's hard to develop as a passer in the fc system...he is so darn athletic...i wish he hadn't come back :)

i heard from a player that the monarchs thought they could throw at will against the panthers, and that proved to be true as glenn was 29-46 for 331 and 2 td's in his first collegiate start...it wasn't just short stuff, either...the monarchs had some big plays in the passing game

kickerdad...not sure if you saw, but i (unfortunately) went 4-0 today to improve to 22-4 in the pick 'ems on the season

KickerDad, was a bit warm wasnt it, throw in the intensity from the game and it got down right hot. Huge win for AU. I'd be lieing if I said I wasnt nervous after that first quarter. CNU defense came to play and holding AU to 3 points after three trips to the red zone was huge on thier part. Very good game by both defenses. AU 's offense sputtered a bit but think you can credit that to a hug effort on the part of CNU. Cant say enough about AU's o line. Group has been banged up all year. At one point only had one "starter" on the field yesterday, but they have become a group with interchangebale parts. A man goes down and they are able to plug in a new on. Right now they have 7 or 8 "starters" and have to credit that to the new o line coach .They didnt have a great game, but got it done when it was needed. Wilson (rb) is a beast. Big, strong and has some foot speed but most important really reads his blocks well. Makes it a bit easier on the O line when he is carrying the ball. Beleive you are correct, first win for AU at CNU.

Had a chance to talk with a few of the CNU players after the game, obviosly they were dissapointed but this is a hungry group. Anyone that thinks CNU is dead and burried, I dont buy it. Their defense played great and the offense had its moments, few breaks go there way and who knows.

Great game at a outstanding venue, an AU win, and a beautiful day. Bonus points, a short drive home. Hard to beat that...

I saw a bunch of coaches walk off the field upset and only 1 player and take a wild guess of who that player was? 1 oline starter was on the field at during some parts of the game and we lost is their any question that CNU's talent is in the dumps right now? As far as CNU being dead overall as a program I would say we must not be looking at the same team. A hungry group does not allow a team to play second and third string o line and your starting qb finishes the game. A hungry team makes #90 from AU regret the day he late hits a CNU qb with no knees for no reason. The o linemen from CNU let Long pick himself off of the turf as if he was not their teammate. Overall just a different team mentally and there is nothing the coaches can do about that. I am coming to homecoming in a couple of weeks strickly to catch up with some of my old brothers because what I saw yesterday was not CNU football.

54, you know your team better than I since I only see them once a year and read about them other times on this message board. But I can tell you from experience that chewing them out and talking about them on a public forum such as this is not going to help them or the coaches. From my seat your team looked very strong. A few breaks here and there and you win the game. Averett could have very easily been up 21 to 3 at halftime and instead it was an even game. These two teams have played each other tight over the past 6 years with exception of 3 years ago. You play a tough out of conference schedule and the conference itself has gotten closer to being equal over the past several years. Don't be too hard on them, they look good and you have some outstanding talent. They will come through for you soon.

AUPOP, which player is your son. Also, you mention a short trip, where do you live? We are from Suffolk and CNU is only a 30 minute ride for us. Danville is another story.

Narch, ever since I came on these boards 6 years ago you have always been one of the top pickers. You know these teams very well and have a good nack for always being able to pick the right ones (even the out of conference games) I think you are a a fortune teller or run a casino. At any rate good job.
