CNU85,

I noticed that the Captians have a new Defensive Coordinator.  He has been working the 3-3-5 defense for a number of years at WVU, HSC and Michigan.  Do you think a change in defensive scheme is at hand at CNU this year?

Good question. I hope we learn more on media day next week. A new coach always brings in new ideas. However, a lot will depend on how he evaluates the talent he has to deal with. I would suspect some change and continuous tweaking. Also, the opponent will dictate your defense in any given week. Stay tuned and enjoy the ride.

It's that time of year again. So as by tradition ...

If anyone has any suggestions on questions they'd like asked at Media Day let me know — either via posts or email — and I'll consider them for the webcast portion.

Remember you forfeit right to belly ache about question quality if you don't submit. ::)

Any word leaked out yet on what USASAC teams may be considered for the Hornets 2012 football sked as non-conference games?

It's a shame I am swamped with work or I would be there, too. Will be looking forward to reading your report!

watched coach e at media day...not quite as quotable as coach sy, but i'd line up to play for him, that's for sure!

So who are the coaches picking this year. Haven't been on here in a long time. Trying to catch up.

GuyFormerlyPSBBG

I said I didn't know what to expect out of Greensboro this year.

All last place votes.  No pressure.

GC has been picked to finish last in recent years, but has only finished as low as tied for last place.

They may are may not finish in last place this year....I don't know.

"Are" and "or" .... so close, yet so far away.

not sure how long "recent" is in your book, but in addition to a last place tie in 2010, they were all alone in last and winless in the conference in 2008...so in 2 of the last 3 years the pride has finished in last place

(in full disclosure, gc's average finish over the last 3 years is higher than that of my monarchs, who have finished next-to-last, next-to-last and tied for last over that span)

This reminds me of a dual track and field meet between the USA and USSR during the cold war era.  The Americans trounced the Russians, but it was reported in the Soviet press as the Russians finished 2nd and the Americans finished next to last.  Perhaps you and GuyFormerlyPSBBG should try this strategy! :)  Guilford, for example, has a Top Seven football finish in the ODAC for 20 straight years.

I know you are correct about 2008. In the 2008 poll,  I don't think GC was picked to finish last. (It might have been SU)

I was just saying the team picked for last place........doesn't finish in last place.  (At least there was tie and GC didn't have sole possession of last  ;))

You guys aren't focused.  It's rival week!  Last place, third place, the only thing that matters is tearing Guilford apart.

Shouldn't be that hard

Coach Rusiewicz, as if you needed anything, here's an item for the bulletin board!

you know, i wish i knew who mu's "rival" was...as a fan, the team i most want mu to beat is cnu, because they are the gold standard, but mu is 2-8 all-time against cnu, and some of the 8 have been REALLY lopsided, so it's not much of a rivalry

greensboro and ncwc are the closest conference schools from a proximity standpoint, but those series are pretty lopsided (despite gc taking the last 2 from the monarchs, mu is still 10-4 all time vs. the pride and ncwc has absolutely THUMPED mu in each of the last 5 years) and i don't think either would consider mu the primary rival

mu and guilford have played in every year that mu has had football, and the series is relatively close (guilford holds a 13-8 advantage, but is just 2-2 over the last 4, with each of those games being decided by 5 points or less)...but they aren't conference foes, so that reduces the importance, in my mind

maryville may be the best bet for mu...they are a conference foe (now) and the all-time series 7-6 in favor of the scots – the teams have split the last 6 contests, and 5 of those games have been really close...2008 debacle aside, the mu/m'ville series over the last 6 seasons have all been decided by 6 or fewer points and the 6 point contest was a 4 OT game...maybe the scots are the mu rival, but i don't think that the feeling is reciprocated

of course, if the campbell vs. mu series would start back up, that would be a true rivalry...those 2 games were the most electric atmosphere i've experienced for mu football to date

Geographic proximity does help (Duke/Carolina, Calvin/Hope, Cal/Stanford), but tradition takes time (Georgia/Florida, Harvard/Yale, HSC/RMC).  If you have both, it's a bonus!  I would rather play Methodist from a philosophical/academic standpoint than some of the non-conference schools we play, but you can't argue with the cost savings (and increased attendance) of proximity.  Shenandoah will eliminate one next year - of Averett, Greensboro, Methodist and Southern Virginia, it'll probably be NAIA SVU.
