Rivalries:

Interesting topic.

There is the AU vs GC rivalry:

In the GC community a fair number of people consider AU to be a rival, but I've never thought that way. AU really makes this more of a rivalry than GC.

GC vs GC:

City Rivalry.

I've always considered Guilford to be our biggest rivalry and I think the general consensus at Greensboro is the same.  On the other hand, I believe Guilford doesn't believe the rivalry to be as important?

For the USASouth, the rivalries are sport by sport...

I agree. I never saw a bigger crowd at a DIII game (that I was physically at) than at that old field in Greensboro (Grimsly high I think). Especially during the night

Yes, the Soup Bowl (in odd years) is played at 10,000-capacity Jamieson Stadium, which is home to both the Grimsley HS Whirlies (Whirlwinds) and the Greensboro College Pride.   Its namesake, Bob Jamieson, by the way, is a Guilford alumnus and legendary coach.  In even years, it's played in Armfield Stadium on Guilford's campus.  I've been to all 15 and I'm pretty sure the attendance is usually between 3,500 and 4,500.  The games were very well-attended during the Vogelbach era, with crowds close to 4500 (or more) at each.

Of course, this all pales in comparison to The Game between Sydney and Macon.  I'm sure there are other DIII rivalries that draw well also.

My alma mater's rivalry game against DePauw drew more than 11,700 people last year. :)

St. John's games do quite nicely, too!

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

Two great examples - thanks!  I would also imagine some of the WIAC games draw well with their state-supported larger than normal DIII student bodies.

The Souper Bowl.

Now how many rivalries support a cause like the one between Greensboro and Guilford?  Good to see good come out of "bad blood"

Here's 2010 attendance numbers.

It will be interesting what impact, if any, having 4 home games under the lights will have on attendance at CNU.

Pat, thanks for the two links on attendance and humanitarian rivalries - interesting. +1

narch, do you think you'll be at the Guilford game in Fayetteville on Sept 10?  If my schedule works out, I might make that trip.

Guy former pride.

The Greensboro Guilford Game is a true rivalry.  You wouldn't understand if you never played it.  It is without a doubt the most important games for each year.  I wish it had remained the last game of the schedule for both teams.
