GAMEDAY! Is anyone doing Pick um's for the USA South? Is there anyone out here on the board at all? What has happened? Seems quiet lately.

I won't manage the pick em's but willing to pick a few games.

Final Guilford 27, Greensboro 7

Guilford dominated this game in most aspects - looked much sharper than last season.  Pride's lone score was a 32-yard run up the middle with 1:08 to go.  Surprisingly (for me), three of Guilford's four score came via pass and run.  Offense looked sharp, but had a couple of drive-killing penalties around the 30-yard line three times in the first half.  GCP's defense was on the field a lot today and I think the time of possesion battle eventually took its toll.

Anyway, great win for the Quakers as they snapped an 11-game losing streak and gave Coach Rusiewicz his first Gatorade bath as a college head coach.  Nice.

Hopefully, the Pride can regroup, but their offense didn't look real sharp to me.  Unfortunately for Greensboro, many of their tougher games lie ahead.  Good luck to GCP in the USASAC this season!

Nice game for the Bishops.  Two interceptions turned the tide....Nice game guys!!!!
The only easy day was yesterday

CNU played like it was the first game of the season to be sure.  Had a few miscues early on, especially on offense, but the defense did a spectacular job and the ground game squeaked out enough offense to start the season off in the W column.

As a fan/alum the game was very disappointing.  I tried to catch the game via audio/video but was unsuccessful most times.  I will blame it on my internet access (even though I don't think that was the case.)  The QB for GCP showed some poise and didn't play awful, even though his stats didn't reflect that.  I heard through the audio feed there were way too many drops by the WR's in this game.  This is a prefect time for the non-starters to step up this week in practice and show that you have the hands to be a starter.  Do I think the +5 drops to completions would have changed the outcome of game? No, but it would have kept the defense off the field and give them some more rest.

Just by the audio, sounds like some of the defensive players need to hit the weight room hard.  I heard on more than one occasion the RB's for GCQ laying out some defenders.  Defenders are supposed to be laying the wood not the other way around.

I hope the offense and defense really steps up going forward if I were to grade the team performance in this game it would not be very good at all.

Here is a link to an article about Maryville's decision to play Tennessee Tech, a scholarship school.  I leave it to others to figure out if this is nuts:

this could get ugly, but if maryville gets through the game without injuries and without damaging team morale/psyche, it can be a "win" for the program - to be honest, as a fan of a team that, like m'ville, got drubbed in week 1, i would prefer a win that actually goes in the win/loss column - hopefully the monarchs get that "w" this weekend...it's highly unlikely that m'ville will

Should be an interesting game in Fayetteville between the Quakers and the Monarchs.  Both schools are coming off poor seasons in 2010.  MU won last year's game 27-21, but it could have gone either way.  That early September loss helped set the tone for Guilford's 0-10 campaign.  Quakers won handily last week over what looked like a weak Greensboro team and the Monarchs got drubbed on the road by a good RMC team, so I see this game as a toss-up for now.  Wish I could be there!

nice win for the monarchs today...they really dominated, going up 17-0 after a pick six, fumble recovery that was turned into a long td pass down the seam to adam thomas and a tyler mosko fg - guilford got a score before the half and converted a two point conversion to go down 17-8. The monarchs drove right down the field on the opening drive of the third and went up 24-8, then mosko hit a 45 yard fg for a 27-8 lead and the outcome was all but decided - gcq continued to fight a claw, with #29 pulling in a nice td (he and #82, i think, are both really nice wr's) - murphy then hit vaughn cross on a 7 yard slant that turned into around a 40 yard td and the next mu possession was a 71 yard scamper for a td by murphy - qcq then got a 50+ yard punt return for a td and the final 40-22 margin

the monarch defense looked really nice, and had held gcq in check for 3 quarters, really...gcq racked up a lot of yardage late when the outcome was decided - the defense had a REALLY big goalline stand, denying gcq 4 times from inside the 5...nice win for mu and it was good to see dave eavenson get win #1

Captain Bob

Not a pretty weekend for the USAC, as the Monarchs were the only ones to pick up a win.

CNU had a shot to win at Stevenson, we tied the game up late in the 4th but failed the 2-pt try.  The defense held on and gave us another shot at the endzone, but the Mustangs forced a field goal with just around one minute to play.  They marched down the field and put one through the uprights to force OT.  Both teams scored, and in the 2nd extra period, we kicked a field goal before they threw a beautiful pass to the back of the endzone.  Props to Stevenson for the win in their first ever home game.

Next week, CNU will kick off the first night game on campus against Salisbury (RV in the D3football.com poll).

Congratulations to the Monarchs, narch.  This was one of the games I thought GCQ had a decent chance to win, but five turnovers are hard to overcome.  I'm encouraged, however, and think things are headed in the right direction.  Number 29, by the way, is Ben King from Trinity HS - he started his career at Appalachian, but the injury bug and the depth chart for the Mountaineers didn't afford much playing time.  We're sure glad to have him at Guilford.

After two games and a cumulative 65-7 score, things haven't looked really good for the Greensboro College Pride.  I hope things get better for them, but they may be looking at a rough season.  The Greensboro News and Record often does "Stars of the Game", with one or more players picked from each squad.  In today's E&H/GCP recap, however, they only did "Star of the Game", with no one noted for the Pride.  I hope not, but I think the Pride may be in for an 0-10 season.

narch

averett looks like they played relatively well against rmc, despite the loss, and the su/bc game looks like it could have gone either way...su out-gained bc, but also out-turnovered them by 4 to 1

cnu losing to a first year program is SHOCKING, and the ncwc/hsc score is close to that result on the shock-meter...the tigers really dominated the bishops
