64,

I do agree that the punt return did help things for Ferrum, but the missed fake FG pass, which I think I could have caught, made me think that the momentum was shifting in the Bishops favor. The receiver could not have been more wide open, nor could the pass have hit him anymore squarely in the hands...still gravity yanked that ball to the ground. It was a good game, and Ferrum has really changed some things up since I saw them play H-SC. Their first two games they gave up 79 points....In their last three, they have given up 19, and of those 19, NCW has the only touchdown.
Good luck the rest of the way!

Sorry to be so delinquent in posting stuff up.

Here's the link to The Daily Times coverage of Ferrum's victory over Maryville Oct 1. Not linking to column for props but by going to column and using the link there to the game story it becomes available around the pay wall. Where direct story isnt available. Also links to photo galleries and the How they scored, though a bit ungainly is now included online beside the game story or column.

This link, same work around to get to game story, is for Maryville's win over Methodist.

I have to kick in that while I haven't seen what the cameras actually captured of the oddest play I've seen in a while (Methodist picks Maryville on fade to corner of end zone, corner doesn't go down but tries to run it out, gets crushed by the center and running back, fumbles the ball at the 3 and different Maryville receiver scoops and falls forward for apparent TD. Flag for pass interference declined, excessive celebration accessed on kick off) but Im hoping its a play of the week nominee. It certainly went into the group of weirdest plays I've ever seen in person.

MU is definitely going in the right direction.

Coach said postgame that it was a planned, if unannounced, move to switch to Reber as quarterback and that Murphy took it very well. he sure seemed to be doing something with Reber between series, so I can only assume it was advice and such. I think he's got a good future from what he showed in his first game.

Biggest surprise was Maryville running the ball productively. Picking up a first down on a run everyone knew was coming to bring in the victory formation was a huge step forward from that eight/tenths of a yard per rush against Ferrum.

Congrats ? if that's the right word to Maryville and Methodist for winning play of the week.

There is a lot of understanding efforts from at least a half dozen players on both sides during that play.

Good choice by Pat and the guys  ::)

Absolutely.  It's an example of what I hope all sports teams and siblings would do.

Agreed.  A really touching story, and I appreciated the expanded coverage of the USAC.  If there is any way for Averett to honor Rick without a win, I wish them the very best of luck.

Ferrum looks good against Methodist, and wins 37-17. Lots of back up players saw action in the 4th qtr. Overall, a solid effort by the Panthers. I watched the CNU/AU game, and both looked good. AU up 14-0 at halftime. Final, CNU 23 AU 14.

NCW and SU winners also

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University used a strong first half combined with a late score Saturday afternoon to down Maryville College 28-21 in USA South Conference football action.

Shenandoah (3-3, 2-1 USA South) jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead, but needed a late touchdown as Maryville (1-5, 1-2) rallied.

Senior Kyle Feldman provided that game-winning score, hauling in a 36-yard touchdown pass from classmate (and roommate) Daniel Wright with 2:27 remaining.

The Hornets needed Feldman's first-ever TD due to a completely different offense from the Scots in the second half.

With negative two yards in total offense before the break, Maryville switched to backup quarterback Melvin Burston to start the second and the freshman delivered, helping MC to 240 yards of total offense in the final 30 minutes.

With 6:13 to play, Burston scrambled for a 31-yard TD to tie the game.

SU then drove 70 yards in just eight plays, finishing with the Wright-to-Feldman strike on 2nd down and 7.

Until Burston's second half heroics, it seemed as if the game was going be a rout as Shenandoah rolled up 298 yards in the opening two quarters to take a 21-0 lead.

SU held the ball for 22:15 in the first half, including an amazing 12:29 in the opening period.

Junior running back Brad Martz did most of the damage, rolling up 140 of his game-high 191 yards rushing in the first 30 minutes.

Defensively, the Hornets had seven tackles (including three sacks) for a total of 40 yards in losses in that same span.

The Hornets finished the game with 416 yards in total offense. In addition to Martz' 191 rushing on 41 carries, senior All-America candidate Rico Wallace had six receptions for 113 yards and one touchdown.

Wright was 15 for 23 for 246 yards, three TD's and two interceptions.

Both interceptions happened deep in Maryville territory.

Sophomore Josh Rogers had nine tackles to pace the defensive effort.

Shenandoah is on the road next Saturday with a 1:00 USA South Conference contest at Methodist.

Captain Bob

In Newport News today the Captains looked sharp against NC Wesleyan.  I was a little worried late in the first quarter when the Bishops responded to our TD by returning the kickoff all the way, and again in the third when they pulled close at 23:19, but CNU took control of the game and put together a really solid drive.

The CNU press release <http://cnusports.com/news/2011/10/22/FB_1022112609.aspx> has all the stats, but I'd like to just highlight a couple here.  The first is the accuracy of sophomore QB Lyndon Garner.  He stepped into the role midway through the season and tonight went 14-19 (175 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT) and the majority of those incompletions were purposeful to avoid sacks.  The CNU defense was also solid, allowing just 101 rushing yards with 51 coming on a single play.  [I (thought I) saw the runner step out of bounds on the play about 5 yards in, as did our coach, but the referee did not :( ].  The final stat is the attendance, at 6,141.  It is a new record for POMOCO stadium, and the first time the record has been reset since the inaugural game 11 years ago.

The final score may be a bit misleading as both teams scored a touchdown in the final two minutes of the game.

gotta be honest...the su uniforms are pretty ugly, if you ask me...the players in them were good, but the uni's themselves are a mess :)
