The only easy day was yesterday

27 Total Penalties for 221 yards at the Maryville vs Averett game on Saturday. Weird game to watch. Live video at http://www.knoxivi.com/maryville_college

Ferrum 66
Greensboro 23

Ferrum had three turnovers in the first half resulting in 13 points for Greensboro. Ferrum had an easy pick six for one of their D-backs, but he forgot to catch the ball.
Panthers had over 600 yards of offense.
Good win, but its a much rougher road from here on out.

Solid job by CNU. Overall a great day. It was our 10 year reuninon/homecoming weekend so a lot of the old players were there. It was really great to see my old teammates. But man, I am continually impressed by CNU as a whole. The football team(and other teams) is usually one of the best in the conference, our marching band is impressive for D3, you have the massive cheerleader squad, 6000+ crazy fans, the silver storm dance team and to top it off an impressive fireworks display at halftime. I forgot to mention the beautiful campus. As a fan and former student athlete, you just sit back and say, "wow, this is a D3 school?"

If Averett's players had kept their trash talking mouths shut, they might have won the game....The refs were not amused but more to the point, neither were Maryville's players.

Ferrum at Shenandoah...Major game for both teams...snowing in Winchester right now. They are calling for 5-8 inches.
Not sure which team this will affect the most.
This should be one heck of a game.

It's 3pm start-time now.

Overall, is USA-South down this year?

Allen C

Hard to say- Probably others on this board would know better than me, but for the last several years, GC and MU have really struggled....except two years ago GC had a 6-4 season I think.
Ferrum is much improved this year, and CNU is still the favorite to win the conference. NCW is down compared to recent years, but SU is a good deal better in my opinion.
Averett is sort of up and down, and looks like this is more of a down year, but they have some really good potential. Maryville is coming on strong in the latter part of the season. I think they will be stronger next year.
Is the USASC down? Probably about the same, but just a different order.

The public press release that I recv'd in my e-mail account this evening ...

WINCHESTER, Va. - League leading Ferrum College rolled up over 400 yards in total offense Sunday afternoon in a 41-28 USA South Conference football victory over Shenandoah.

Ferrum (6-2, 5-0 USA South) maintained its position at the top of the USA South standings with the win over SU (4-4, 3-2).

The first-ever Sunday contest in Shenandoah history was needed because of a snowstorm that hit the northern Shenandoah Valley early Saturday morning. The Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium turf was made unplayable by the storm and the field had to be plowed in order to get the game in Sunday afternoon.

Ferrum remains tied for first in the league with Christopher Newport and hosts the Captains this coming Saturday in a game that will decide the league title.

FC had 314 of its 415 yards in total offense on the ground as quarterback Marcus Mayo and halfback Steven Harris both rushed for at least 135 yards.

Mayo had 142 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries with Harris adding 135 and two TDs on just 11 touches.

Mayo broke open a 14-7 game with a 70-yard TD run around right end at the 7:17 mark of the second that effectively sealed the contest for the visitors.

This scamper also started a run of 27 unanswered points for the Panthers.

SU scored the final three TDs of the game, the last on a Daniel Wright 1-yard QB sneak with 1:22 remaining, but could not recover the ensuing onside kick and Ferrum ran out the clock.

Wright got the late game run started by hooking up with senior classmate Kyle Feldman on a 14-yard TD strike with 1:52 left in the third before sophomore Byron Mitchell scored his first-ever touchdown with a pick-six at the 12:09 mark of the fourth.

Wright's 1-yard sneak was his second of the game - he had made it 14-7 by capping a 10-play, 63-yard drive with a 1-yard run 50 seconds into the second quarter.

Ferrum outgained the Hornets 415-301, including 314 to 69 on the ground.

Wright led the Shenandoah offense with a 23 for 45, 232-yard passing day that included the TD pass to Feldman and three interceptions.

Mitchell had 10 tackles (six solo) to lead the defense.

SU begins a two-game road trip to complete the season with a 1:00 game at Averett on Saturday.

My opinion is except for Ferrum, I believe the conference is down this season.  CNU barely beat Greensboro, should have lost to Shenandoah if the placekicker makes the PAT with :23 seconds left in the game and have been close in several other games.  However, they are still undefeated in the conference which is a great place to be at right now.  I've seen Ferrum and they seem to be beating up on their opponents since the conference season began.  They've got great looking athletes on both sides of the ball.  Should be a great game between the 2 teams this week.

Shenandoah has done a great job rebuilding their team to a contender in the conference.  Maryville is on a hot streak right now since putting freshman QB Melvin Burston in at starting QB.  The offense has opened up and the team responds well with Melvin leading the offense.  By the way, that was a great road win for the Fighting Scots this weekend against NCW.  Goalline stand at the end of the game was awesome.  NC Wesleyan doesn't seem to have the 2 or 3 great offensive players like they have had in the past.  However, watching the MC-NCW game on the internet on Saturday, NCW middle linebacker has got to be the best LB in the conference.

Averett, Methodist & Greensboro all seem to be young this season and will hopefully develop their freshmen and sophomores for the next several seasons.

Captain Bob

I'm not sure I would say that CNU is "down" this season.  Yes, as you mentioned we are 6-0 in the USAC (along with Ferrum), but tbh the final scores have not been true to the game for the majority of the season.  We had Salisbury (currently #11 in the nation) down 10 points with less than 4 mins to go, but faltered in the closing seconds.  On the same note, we were up 27-10 at Greensboro this past weekend and again allowed two touchdowns in the closing three minutes.  CNU seems to be playing up (and down) to our opponents and therefore have been putting on a thrilling (and at times, cardiac stressing) show this season.

There is no question that this week's game in Ferrum will decide the conference championship, and almost certainly the only USAC bid to the NCAAs.  My hope is that with the importance of the game, our recognition and respect for the Panthers' talent, and the extra day of rest (due to the postponement of Ferrum/Shenandoah), the Captains will be able to hold on for the win.  I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a high scoring game that stays close from start to finish.  Best of luck to Allen C and the rest of the Panthers out there; may the best squad win.
